The Independence Day has historically been a huge weekend for the Hindi film industry. The most iconic film of all time – Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay – released on this very day exactly 41 years ago. Even after nearly 4 decades, the lead hero of the film, the evergreen Amitabh Bachchan remains one of the busiest actors in the industry.
In the last 10 years, 12 Hindi films (small films were not taken into consideration) have released during the weekend. Both the biggest grosser and the lowest grosser of the Independence Day weekend belong to Salman Khan. It goes to show the phenomenal rise of the superstar in the last few years. Back then, not only did a film featuring a one-film-old Ranbir Kapoor release on the same day as a Salman starrer, but it held the upper hand and quite easily won the box office clash.
8 year later, Salman is the undisputed biggest star in the industry and even a top star like Shah Rukh Khan had to postpone his keenly-awaited film ‘Raees’ to let ‘Sultan’ take centre stage.
Rustom will be Akshay Kumar’s first success during the Independence Day weekend, his last two films during the same period – Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara and Brothers – were huge failures at the ticket window.
Chak De India is probably the best and most acclaimed film to release during the ‘freedom weekend’ in the last 10 years. The film did not take a huge start at the box office, but went on to be a blockbuster with incredible word-of-mouth. For a lot of people, it could be the career-best film of Shah Rukh Khan.

My favorite independence day release movie is kaminey. Shahid is terrific as charlie and guddu.

2 Points
1) SRK postponed Raees only becoz Sultan was YRF movie. It has nothing to do with Salman. He should thank SRK for this decision. Becoz the movie crossed 180 cr in 5 days and all those 5 days were Eid Holidays. If there was a clash then it will be exactly half for sure.
2) I dont agree to your point that Chakde Will triple the business if it release now. It will actually surpass all the collections ever. When CDI was released there were very less screens and ticket rates in Multiplex was less. Plus the scope was not so much to collect like the opening days that it gets today mainly becoz of the Social media promotions and other factors. If you take the movies from 2005 to 2016 , then the Top 3 WOM movies will be 1) CDI 2) 3 Idiots 3) Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Out of this bajrangi enjoyed the real scope as it released in 2015. 3 Idiots would have probably grossed around 400 cr if it release today. And CDI could have grossed somehere around 450-500. Not to mention anything about the world wide collections as it could be the first movie to cross 1000 cr world wide as well.

Some fans of Akshay are rejoicing thinking Akshay has become bigger superstar than Hrithik after MD debacle which is not true and is foolishness to think so. All it takes is one film for Hrithik to get back to Super Stardom and continue competing with Khans.
Akshay started his career in the year 1991 (10 Yrs before Hrithik) and is yet to win a Filmfare best actor award or had a movie that has crossed 150 crores. In comparison, Ranbir & Ranveer have movies which collected 150+ & have won atleast one best actor award.
So to give a best example of top 10 stars in Country considering the factors: 1) Content/choice of movies, 2) Awards, 3) Opening of their films & 4) Final collections of their movies are:
1) Aamir/Salman (difficult to choose no.1 between them)
2) Salman/Aamir
3) SRK
4) Hrithik Roshan
5) Ajay Devgan
6) Ranbir Kapoor
7) Ranveer Singh
8) Akshay Kumar
9) Siddarth Malhotra
10) Farhan Akthar.
Rustom has only improved the chance of Akshay to move up to 7th position. The amount of years he is industry he is expected to be at a level of Khans, but his level of competition is with Ranveer & Ranbir. But, have to appreciate Akshay for choosing the right kind of movies in 2016. Hope he continues to do so and start competing at a level of Khans.

The year before CDI released, Aamir had two 50 cr grossers, the first in the industry in half a decade at that time (after Gadar) and srk’s both movies couldn’t cross them. So definitely Aamir was a bigger crowd puller ahead of srk at that time. And don’t forget that unlike CDI, TZP wasn’t a solo release. It had welcome as competition.

CDI had a first week of Rs. 21,53,00,000 and a total of Rs. 66,54,00,000. That is a 3.09x multiplier.
So definitely TZP’s wom was better than CDI inspite a clash.

God Tussi Great Ho was a delayed movie n Salman did it for his friend Rumi Jaffrey. Those days Salman was least bothered about his career & there was nothing called script sense in him. But salute to his smashing comeback, had it been another Khan or actor he would have done & dusted by now. GTGH was most awful movie of Salman along Hello Brother !!!!!!!

TZP released on 21 Dec . It had a big holiday (X-Mas) in Week 1 . Another big holiday (New Year) in Week 2 . CDI had no big holiday except Independence Day which is an one-day holiday , unlike X-Mas which is a vacation .
Numbers don’t speak everything . If u consider these factors then you’ll find CDI to have a better WOM .

Choices of audience keep changing. Modern day audience would reject HAHK, but would love CDI or even DDLJ as Kajol wasnt a big heroine then(her only hit was Baazigar) as compared to Madhuri-(beta, saaja,, dil, tejaab, khalnayak all BBs before hahk, Anjaam was a dark thriller).In smaller centres DDLJ performed lower than HAHK due to foreign locations and ostentation of west. Today the case would have been favorable.
HAHK had 14 to 15 songs plus Madhuri at all time career high before 1995. People in 90s would go to watch movies just for Songs. Thats it!!!!
And just bcoj SRK is going thru career low doesnt mean CDI wouldnt be huge today. Content is the king after all. Who thought TWMR would have been a blockbuster? Was Kangana a big star?

Use common Sense and see the relationship between SRK and YRF. Both will never spoil the business of each other. And the real reason for Raees delay is SRK’s injury. Everybody knows this. But you dumb Salman fans will never want to see the truth. And with Eid Solo release anyone can make a blockbuster. See what SRK did in 2013 , He came with an average masala movie and smashed all records. Not to mention that movie got only 6 open days as OUATMA released on 7’th day. So its not a big deal to create records on Eid. SRK is no less than Salman when comes to Openings…That’s why he is still holding the Opening Day , Opening Weekend records even after you Salman release 3 movies after that. And Footfalls increase with the increase of screens. CDI was released in just 1000 screens. Bajrangi in 4000 Screens. So Initial week footfalls will make a difference here.

If Raees is delayed due to any injury or re-shoot then why did Ritesh and SRK claimed Raees is completed and ready for Eid release ? Shall I post their comments and prove you wrong ? If it is solely due to YRF then you must not forget that Adi also used Salman’s ETT to book screens for JTHJ in 2012. Where were at that point of time ? SRK himself said that there are few portions which was remaining in Raees and they could have
rushed and completed shooting. But since the decision was made they opted not to rush and moved it to a different date. I am not saying that Raees will destroy Sultan..Becoz we are yet to see the movie. But 1 thing for sure , had that clash happened, the collections for first 5 days will be exactly half for sultan. Becoz Raees will also get a huge opening and the multiplex show count will be divided also. So SRK really did a favor to YRF and Salman by shifting the movie. Instead of thanking that you guys are bashing him… Losers you guys are.
And regarding screen bookings for JTHJ , Dude which world are u in…Both are YRF movies so its common that they book screens in advance. Similar case happened for Bajirao Mastani as Eros used to book screens during Bajrangi. So its common to book screens in advance. Do not put such meaningless posts and get trolled yourself
