Hrithik Roshan: Past, Present and Future

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan is the biggest star the industry has produced in the current century. No other actor who made his debut after Hrithik, has gone on to establish his fanbase across the country.

In this article, we analyse the past, present and future of a superstar, who has the potential to make it to the very top in the industry, but his decision to do one film in 1.5 – 2 years could be holding him back from achieving greatness.

PAST

16 years ago, a newcomer took the entire Hindi Film Industry by storm and was immediately tagged as a overnight ‘Superstar’. He literally had the female half of the nation in a swoon and captivated the other half equally as well. The euphoria that gripped the entire country was known as ‘Hrithik Mania’.

Expert Movie Pundits predicted doom for Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ as the movie’s release (14th Jan 2000) was going to be sandwiched between the much-awaited films featuring the Mega Khans – ‘Mela’ (7th Jan 2000) and ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ (21st Jan 2000). Roshans stuck to their release date and the rest, as they say, is history.

‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ featuring a newcomer trounced the competition and the hysteria witnessed is unmatched till date. A perfect scenario to showcase the magnitude of mega-stardom that Hrithik achieved in 2000 is to compare the opening of the Diwali releases – ‘Mohabbatein’ and ‘Mission Kashmir’. The presence of Hrithik (a supporting role that was rewritten at the last moment to do justice to his stardom) was enough to get a better initial for the Sanjay Dutt starrer against the mega combo of Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan – who were returning together after the all-time classic DDLJ. Yes, the opening of Mission Kashmir was about 40% higher than a big film like Mohabbatein back in 2000.

What followed after the tremendous high were half-baked films, but Hrithik made his presence felt in films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and later delivered one of his career-best performances in Koi Mil Gaya.

Hrithik reached the peak of his career in the year 2006. He featured in two sequels that catapulted him into a different league altogether. ‘Krrish’ and ‘Dhoom 2’ easily surpassed the likes of ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘Don’, ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Fanaa’, ‘Jaan-E-Mann’ and rose to become the top openers of the year. ‘Dhoom 2’ created history and went on to become the highest grosser of the year. ‘Dhoom’ is the biggest franchise in Bollywood today mainly because of the unprecedented success of its second instalment.

PRESENT

A decade has gone by and the scenario is very different today. Hrithik’s experiments with films like ‘Kites’ and ‘Guzaarish’, didn’t work at the ticket window. The industry has witnessed multiple changes with regards to marketing and promotion of the movies. The success mantra is to have a trailer that makes a big impact, followed by a perfect release period. Roshan’s contemporaries (seniors as well as juniors) have raised their standards quite significantly. Also, Hrithik has been unfortunate with the release dates of his last few movies. ‘Bang Bang’ had to clash with ‘Haider’ and now his ambitious project ‘MohenjoDaro’ is pitted against ‘Rustom’. There might be a possibility of his next ‘Kaabil’ clashing with the already postponed ‘Raees’.

The universal record breaking opening of ‘Agneepath’ or ‘Bang Bang’ is a testimony to the fact that Hrithik has a huge following in every nook and corner of the country. The admirers have been eagerly awaiting for that perfect project which can reaffirm the box office standing of their favourite superstar. ‘Shhuddhi’ was being touted as one and understandably the fans were left dejected hearing Hrithik’s decision of not doing the film. Then there were firm reports that acclaimed director Kabir Khan is starting his next with Hrithik, but the wait for that movie has to be much longer as Kabir is now engaged with Salman’s Tubelight. The recent reports of Aamir Khan replacing Hrithik in Yash Raj Films’s ‘Thug’, are not at all encouraging for the fans too.

The big question in the present is – is Hrithik risking his career and standing in the industry by doing one film in two years? Is he losing out on big films? More importantly, is he working with the right directors?

FUTURE

Without an iota of doubt, all Hrithik fans want to see him more often on the silver screen. He just had 4 releases in the last five years (2012 to 2016) – ‘Agneepath’, ‘Krrish 3’, ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Mohenjodaro’.

Aamir Khan is another superstar who works at the same pace but his script selection has been exceptional. Also, when you’re having movies like ‘Dhoom 3’ (biggest franchise) or ‘PK’ (biggest director) in your kitty, the box-office result is a foregone conclusion. During 2005-2006, Aamir had 3 releases (‘Mangal Pandey’, ‘Rang De Basanti’ & ‘Fanaa’) in a span of 9 months. In 1999-2000, Aamir had 4 releases (‘Sarfarosh’, ‘Mann’,’1947 Earth’ & ‘Mela’) within 8 months. Salman Khan has slowed down after attaining super stardom with ‘Dabangg’. From ‘Wanted’ (Sep 2009) to ‘Dabangg’ (Sep 2010), he had 5 releases in one year including ‘London Dreams’, ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’ and ‘Veer’. Even Shah Rukh Khan has now shifted to the top gear and his upcoming list includes ‘Dear Zindagi’, ‘Raees’, Imtiaz Ali and Anand Rai’s next with ‘Fan’ and ‘Dilwale’ just gone by.

As the industry and fans await an outstanding performance from him in ‘Mohenjo Daro’, we sincerely hope he does more films and doesn’t waste the following that he has earned over the years.

  • Reviews from Gulf nations of MD are extra-ordinary. Many twiiter post suggest trailer n promos were nowhere near to how big the film is. It is Hrithik’s best performance and many sites are already quoting he will sweep all awards next year. Whereas Rustom is avg to negative. If thats true, expect many rustom shows to cancel and allotted to MD. Thing to notice is Hrithik gave arguably his best film during independence day time Koi mil gaya (released an Aug 2003) whereas Akshay’s all film during this period are poor- OUATIMD, Brother, Entertainment. Looks like History is repeating itself again.

2006- He rose to different level altogether. And now 2016, exactly a decade later he may repeat it. Undoubtedly at his age he is the best we have. New generation is still young and Khans are ageing. He can in next 2-3 year be at top only if he makes better choices. Which hopefully he will and better roles will be written for him after Mohenjo.

  • ” The presence of Hrithik (a supporting role that was rewritten at the last moment to do justice to his stardom) was enough to get a better initial for the Sanjay Dutt starrer against the mega combo of Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan – who were returning together after the all-time classic DDLJ. I hope everyone reads it. Hrithikmania was huge back then. Unfortunately, he picked wrong movies with big banners in 2001-02 . But, ever since ‘Koii Mil Gaya’ (2003), he’s been spot on with his scripts. I would still give him lots of credit for picking a movie like ‘Fiza’ right after KNPH as a young actor. Not many would have done it. Guzaarish was a brilliant, sensible, dark masterpiece, but majority of Indian audience wasn’t ready for it. Kites was very good as well.

“The recent reports of Aamir Khan replacing Hrithik in Yash Raj Films’s ‘Thug’, are not at all encouraging for the fans too.”

They are, if he had doubts with the script, then I’m glad he opted out of it. He will select a better script.

“The big question in the present is – is Hrithik risking his career and standing in the industry by doing one film in two years? Is he losing out on big films?”

He’s been one of the top 4 superstars in industry for last 10 years while working in same pace, I wouldn’t doubt him. Everyone loses out on big films here and there, but superstars of his stature continue to get big films, everything will be fine as long as he gets the ‘right’ films.

  • BEST ARTICLE….@INDICINE
If there is some one who can overtake KHANs its HR….
but unless he gets right release day.i.e without clash a festival then sure shot he will show his fan power.

  • aamir or hritik or anyone else……anything less than one film a year is a huge risk and also not good for fans or even for the actor per say! one film in two years has worked for aamir but its hard for any other actor……everybody has a different style at the end of the day really!

yes ……from 2002-2004 (both years included), aamir didnt do any film, but then he was going through a divorce…..similar for hritik these past two years…..

have this very strong feeling that hritik will be more active and do more films going forward!

  • Very well written article…. After so much negativity around him, this article and rave reviews of #MohenjoDaro from gulf are satisfactory….
    Eagerly waiting for #MohenjoDaro @iHrithik @hegdepooja @agpplofficial

  • Best article after a long time. Though I still believe that indicine is jokercine and they are favoring him more.

Now where are you @unmatchable joker. Come and read this article you chota mota star fan.

  • Many Akki fans spotted in a article related to Hrithik’s career. Sense of Fear.
Mohenjo Daro is getting positive reviews from everywhere. Its almost sure MD will easily outgross Rustom because Mohenjo Daro is a commercial mivie with content. Nothing against Rustom
Lets have a look at Box Office collection of Thriller movies.

    Special 26 : 73 Crore
    Baby : 85 Crore
    Drishyam : 70 Crore
I really loved all these 3 movies but family audience doesnt give importance to this genre.
Nothing against Rustom and Akshay Kumar but I am going to arrange a grand farewell for Akki Fans within next 5 days.
I dunt hate Akki, I hate their fans.

  • Amazing article by indicine.you guys are truly doing fabulous job.you have taken a very nice initiative with these types of articles. We would love to see same article for srk, salman and aamir as well.Hoping to see same type for articles for khans. Thanks

  • Excellent article… Please Hrithik If not “two” then atleast “one’ movie in a year…
Tomorrow both Rustom and MD.. Excited

  • This first line says it all : “Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan is the biggest star the industry has produced in the current century.”

In fact since his debut he has been one of the biggest stars around. Has remained in the top 4 quite consistently. He has just worked in 20 movies in his 16 year career and yet has achieved so much.

    1. First thing I like most about him is that he is a great human being. A true gentleman with a great sportsman spirit. Just love his personality.

    2. A versatile actor who has played varying roles and quite convincingly. He was simply adored by the audience since his very first movie.

    3. Has a Hit ratio of 50 % which is the best amongst the top senior actors.

    4. Has a Success ratio of 50% which is only behind SRK.

    5. In Indicine top bollywood stars rating, he is 4th in both domestic and overseas rankings. In fact huge possibility of him toppling SRK from the 3rd position in the Indicine domestic rankings. I am expecting MD to earn above 145 cr.

    6. Zero disasters in his career; something only him and SRK share amongst the top senior stars.

(P.S. : My source has always been Indicine box office stats before some one starts bringing in other websites reference)

    7. Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and Dhoom 2 were the highest grossers in 2000, 2003 and 2006 respectively.

Going forward I want him to reduce the long gap between his releases. One movie per year is something which he shall be targeting.

He had a great past, living a great present and will have a great future iA too. Already one of the biggest stars around and no reason he cannot be the no. 1 star in few years time.

    Best wishes for MD.

  • @sk ouatimd did not release in this period and neither did brother…and a movie released in similar timings was bang bang…one of the worst movies ever!!!…stop your biased attitude 2wards hrithik…open your eyes and see that other than znmd and agneepath…all were bad movies that no one liked while akshay has a good movie around the corner each time…even now after rustom ..he has jolly llb 2

  • With one day to go to my most awaited movie for last 2 years i m quite excited to catch up tomorrow morning first day first show. MD definitely has some advantage over Rustom, here is why:
    1) Hrithik, Irrespective of his previous movies results or result of MD, he is without any doubt the Top 4 actor in Bollywood today. His movie will definitely will be above Akshay’s who struggles to be in Top 5.
    2) MD & Rustom releases in same shows/screens in multiplex. Occupancy of both the films will be equal. But MD has 500 screens advantage in single screens. This advantage will give it extra 3-4 crores edge over Rustom.
    3) Akshay has better following over Hrithik in North and few parts of CI. But Hrithik has better following then Akshay in South, East, some parts of CI, West. So single screens occupancy will better for MD.
    4) MD is a universal movie whereas Rustom is court room drama. So if the content is good MD will eat off Rustom in first weekend.
    5) I have collected lot of links which talks about MD having edge over Rustom. I will share them shortly.

With all kind of reports that i have read and seen in youtube, following is my take on collections of MD & Rustom.

If Content is good for both movies:
First Day – MD (15 Crores) & Rustom (12 Crores)
    2nd – MD (17 Crores) & Rustom (13 Crores)
    3rd – MD (22 Crores) & Rustom (16 Crores)
    4th – MD (24 Crores) & Rustom (17 Crores)
Rest of week (has festival advantages) – MD ( 45 Crores) & Rustom ( 36 Crores)
    2nd week – MD (60 Crores) & Rustom (35 Crores)
    Rest of weeks – MD (30 Crores) & Rustom ( 15 Crores)
Final: MD 210 Crores & Rustom 140 Crores.

    if content is average:
    Final – MD 160 Crores & Rustom 80 Crores

    If bad/worst:
    Final – MD 110 Crores & Rustom 50 Crores.

Hope both movies earn well and content is good.

  • I don’t know why some idiots people think hrithik as great guy. I have meet him once and he is such a rude, selfish person. I also hear that he is such a egostic person. He only think about himself. If you all notice him very carefully you all find that if he support or say something good about others their are also some reasons of his selfishness. Hope indicine will publish my this comment. I want to know that what will be the reaction of his fool fans.

  • Yes.one of the best actor. His acting In “Koi mil gaya “in one side and all bollywood acting in other side.Style ICON for Dhoom 2

  • Abhishek, I enjoy reading all of your blogs !!! Keep up the good work and keep writing such posts. I think, MD will do well.

  • This 40% higher is because of 40% higher screen number. This opening days numbers in pre 2006 is absolutely no importance. Mohanbatein released 40% less screen because those days lovestory movies used to release less no of screen and maker had faith that movie will run longer period so they don’t waste money in print.
But I appericite hritik despite having mass appeal like dance, action, body he still doing non commertial stuff. But he is wasting his time. I wang him to do more massy movie because he will not this time again when he touch 50

  • akki commacial films doe’nt suit him thats why whatever he did it he fail we so it with films like chandini chowk kambaqt ishq brothers but with hrithik it’s deferent story akki cannot handle big budget film hrithik can so hrithik is bigger smarter than akki

  • Nice to hear good things about Hrithik after so much negativity about him & Mohenjodaro…….. Hrithik is d only actor who has challenged khans from d very first film till date but is unfortunate since he is not able to get edx holidays for release , is facing clashes, not supported by media most of d times….but he will attain top slot in nest 2-3 years…..Best of luck for Mohenjodaro
    ….epic film..once in decade…
