How much did the industry lose in the month of November?

Question: How much did the industry lose in the month of November? How are they sustaining with such huge losses? – Vikas (New Delhi)

Answer: The losses theatrically are around Rs 100 crore for the month of November. ‘The Shaukeens’ was made on a budget of 39 crore (estimate) including all costs, and the theatrical recovery was around 14 cr. YRF’s ‘Kill Dil’ too was made on a budget of around 40-45 crore including advertising costs. Share from India and overseas business was 20-21 cr.

Then came the year’s biggest disaster. The costs of Happy Ending were around 60 cr, recovery from theatrical business was less than 25%. Ungli too was a disaster, costs of around 32 crore (including inflation for delayed release). Recovery was less than 10 crore.

In short, the distributor share for the entire month of November from 4 major films was 60 cr against costs of Rs 175 crore. Satellite rights will recover some of the losses, but the industry as a whole is completely shaken.

Action Jackson was supposed to give some relief, as Prabhu Dheva films have always been commercially successful. But that film could go on to be as big a disaster as Happy Ending.

For the industry to sustain, the overall quality of films has to improve. A better balance between quality films for the classes (Queen, Vicky Donor, Kahaani for example) and entertaining films for the masses that also appeals to the city audience has to be achieved (Rowdy Rathore, Singham, Kick, Golmaal series).

Which brings us to the film that could potentially strike the perfect balance. Rajkumar Hirani’s PK. If PK doesn’t work, the industry will take a long long time to recover. The disastrous performance of Action Jackson and four films from November, has only increased the trade expectations from PK. Aamir Khan never fails, we hope he doesn’t this time around too.

  • This is the begging of new revolution.
PK may give some relief to the industry but from next month I.e January and Feb will be seen worst movies of the decade.

  • Happy Ending is on of the best Rom-com in the year. it had everything its in favor, good script and got good reviews but the audience rejected the movie. dont know y????.

  • @nipun and others, if HNY was soo bad how did on earth it make 205 crore??? It was enjoyable but cud have been much better with better director and script than that crap director farah.

  • I blame the audience – they overlook well made movies and will watch movies like happy new year and furthermore they do not give support to the new actors. This paints a very poor picture of our tastes. Indian cinema cannot progess quality wise if the audience does not want it to. Sure we want entertainment ( I loved Bang Bang) but we need to give more appreciation to movies like haider, queen etc. I watched all of the November flop movies – they were not as bad as happy New year.

  • The most awesome and the heartwarming movie from the team of 3 Idiots coming in another 10 days..!!!! Catch it at your nearest theatres!!!! !!!!PK!!!!
