The trend of Hollywood films beating the business of the Hindi film industry continued with this week’s releases.
The Hindi releases were Ram Gopal Verma’s Veerappan, Radhika Apte’s Phobia and Naseeruddin Shah’s Waiting. The Hollywood film ‘Angry Birds’ had a very limited release and the occupancy wasn’t too high either, yet the business was almost as much as all the three Bollywood films combined.
Waiting and Phobia are disasters, with both the films collecting around 0.5 crore combined. Veerappan has a chance with the film collecting around 1.5 crore on Friday, but even that film needs big growth of 50-60% on Saturday to have any chance of doing well in the long run. Angry Birds has collected around 2 crore net.
With a limited release Hollywood films are now beating the combined business of small Bollywood releases and the big budget international films are now matching or surpassing the collections of films not starring the Top 5 stars in the country. It’s time for our industry to analyse why the audience isn’t giving smaller films a chance. Even films like Azhat and Sarbjit have struggled to not just recover costs but even to get a decent initial, even though the lead actors travel across the country to promote their films. On the other hand, Angry Birds and X-Men have had little or no promotion – yet have managed a decent initial on Friday morning.
It won’t be long before the threat from Hollywood becomes more serious. 2015 was a turning point with films like Fast and Furious 7, Avengers and Jurassic World. 2016 has been bigger and The Jungle Book remains the top grosser and the film to beat this year.
The threat is obvious, increasing and can no longer be ignored.
For last few years the multiplex audience has been giving a clear message that they will watch the movie only if they find it to be “value for their money”.
So the onus is on the bollywood industry now to create that value.
but in 2017 its good that srk has 2 releases ,salman has 2 and hritik has kaabil but plenty of time left after kaabil shoot .So he can complete another movie and release at the end of the year, akshay has a big movie like robot 2 and ajay has baadshaho and sos-2

We Indians are stupid… We know how to criticize each other in the name of religion. We are not grown yet…!!
And as far as Hollywood business is concern… I think collection get huge contributions from South market too as they like Hollywood movie.
South market is bigger equally Hindi market film. But for Hindi films… Problem is… Film didn’t get good collection from South. Even Superstars like Salman Khan.. Amir Khan… have bad records in South except very few films. In South… Only Shahrukh Khan have good track records followed by Salman n Amir.
If you are small films… No chance at all in South. Sure shot flop in South.
But… Not for Hollywood film. Good franchise.. Popular Hollywood film get acceptance from all Indias. But good Hindi films get acceptance from Delhi Mumbai East Punjab Kolkata… Etc only.
Only Khans trio will able to pull all India acceptance… With good entertaining commercial films.

Multiplex films will always do better than single screen films. The difference in ticket prices comes in handy. The fact the Angry Birds game has been a huge success also helped it to take better opening. I’m sure a lot of kids and even adults had been waiting to see this movie, unlike Phobia, Waiting, Veerappan, who were not even promoted decently except the latter, which is still a single screen movie. Most people might have been unaware of those movies as well unlike Angry Birds, which got the benefit of popularity of its game. So, it wasn’t a big surprise that Angry Birds collected more than all 3 small Bollywood movies combined on 1st day.
Big Hollywood movies like Furious 7, Avengers, Jurassic World, Batman v Superman, X-Men will always do well in India just like most of big Bollywood movies are doing well abroad. Jungle Book’s business in India was also massively helped by the popularity Mowgli’s character and its animated series most of us saw during our childhood. Most of these big Hollywood grossers in India have had this advantage of franchise and popularity of their many years old animated series. Other big Hollywood movies like Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Huntsman featuring big A-listers still struggle to do decent business in India because they don’t have that ‘nostalgia’ or other factor for Indian audience. There’s still a long way to go for Hollywood to seriously challenge Bollywood in India, as long as decades, or even centuries, as long as we continue to make good movies and produce charismatic stars.
After the super success of users like SK fan, Salman fan, Hrithik fan, Salman – Ajay friend etc. at Indicine, we have now a new entrant here “Akshay-SRK fan”. Lol.
But he looks to be more a Amir and Ajay hater by keeping them below the likes of Riteish, Emraan, Aayushman, etc in acting skills. In fact Amir is not even in top 10. Dont know what to say of his judgement of acting skills.
New such fans keep coming. Waiting for a “SRK-Salman fan” now. That would be something.

That’s very idiotic from indicine only Hollywood movies with franchise work here and angry birds is one of the most popular games btw those who are saying that Hollywood movies are much better technically to all of them you all just talk without even thinking that the budget of Hollywood movies is almost 10 times more than Bollywood movies so the budget of almost all Hollywood movies is more than Pk’s domestic collection than how Bollywood makers will ever try making huge budget movies.Its problem in the critics and to an extent we audience too, Sarabjit is great movie but look at its collections if good movies are not working then audience are responsible not we.
It good that hollywood films are doing well and yes, they are much better than 95% if bollywood films. Bollywood really needs to do something innovative and challanging and get the hell out of mindless 1 punch 20 goons fly and typical overrated rom coms of karan johar, ayan mukerjee and imtiaz ali. The day bollywood continue to do something innovative and unique, only then it can survive against hollywood.

the jungle book did huge because there was a nostalgic connection with the film. Mowgli is a very popular character among large no of audience and that helped the movie.

All the hollywood movies that have done well have been either popular franchise or are based on a popular game or serial.Majority of people in our country dont even know name of hollywood actors except few very famous ones so there are lot of external factors also helping the films to do well which needs to be taken into consideration .
The real question is that why are you comparing 2 industries when you should be comparing movies…It is none of your business to be afraid that Hollywood will overtake Bollywood…No aam admi cares about whether movie is hollywood or bollywood, people only care whether movie is good or not…And most of the hollywood film released in india are good while most bollywood movies are bad…You can’t compare 2 industries as 96% hollywood movies don’t even release in india so how can u say that an industry that is barely getting any screens in india is a major competition for bollywood.??? And as far as I remember, healthy competition was a good thing as it makes everyone work harder and improve the final product…And the fact that many indians have watched good korean movies proves that they are into quality based movies….
And the second question that stands is that why are producers going for quantity over quality,,?? Why do they want to release 10 films in a year, in which 9 are bad movies and flops and barely make any profit from the tenth film..?? What are they seeing that we aren’t….No one is dumb enough to know that the story of the movie they are directing or producing is not good and will not work so why make them at all…?? Is there a lack of minds in india..???
The reasons are simple. The writings Or let say scripts are sometimes childish and taking audience for granted. And south remakes is something bwood should get rid off That’s laziness and weak vision. Get urself together let the script be King. Bahubali Bajirao Mastana Airlift Pk Tare Zameer Par are the sort of movie u should bring.
Eventually it all comes down to content and entertainment factor. Youth has become more interested in Hollywood movies as most of them are made better and look cool.

Lol… Indicine.. Hardly any big mega movies of bwood hv rlsed frm Jan to may.. Most were mutiplex oriented movies… Baaghi ko chod ke. From June to Dec… All big superstars movies will rls… Eg: June(H3) July(Sultan) Aug(Mohenjodaro) sept is dull month.. Oct(Shivaay) nov is dull month.. Dec(Befikre & Dangal) .. All these movies will overshadow hwood… Though can’t say same abt dangal as Avatar 2 will clash with it.
Hollywood film makers make quality films and they do not limit the budget of the film,i mean look at the cinematography of Jungle Book,civil War & X-Men,but there is still hope if we can have films like Baahubali,Bajrao Mastani and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Most succesful hollywood films takes time to be completed,like 2yrs or even 3 yrs,hence the makers have time to make ammends when there are errors,i mean look at AVATAR 2 which will be release in Dec 2017,i has taken a minimum of 5yrs to be made and now expect all previous records worldwide to be broken

@Doctor Strange, most hollywood films are completed within no time…And the delays of Avatar 2 has had everyone infuriated about the movie because a good movie can be made in 3 days, while no matter how long it takes, you can not turn a bad movie into a good movie…
