Highest Grossers of the year: 2000 – 2013 Analysis

We’ve updated the list of Top 5 highest grossers of every year since 2000. The year that has gone by has arguably been the most successful year for the film industry, as the average of Top 5 films is more than Rs 200 crore – up by 66 crore compared to 2012.

Shahrukh Khan remains the most successful actor in the last decade and a half with 16 of his films finding a spot in the highest grossers of the year list. SRK is followed by Akshay Kumar, who has never topped the highest grosser list, but has been hugely successful with 12 films in the Top 5.

Hrithik has played the lead in just 19 films in his career out of which 9 have been huge grossers. Salman is above Hrithik with 11 films. Aamir Khan is at number five with 7 films, only because has acted in only 11 films in the last 14 years.

The usual suspects continue to reign supreme with Ranbir Kapoor looking like the only star who can compete against the Top 5. But even he has a long way (a good 4-5 years atleast) before he can come close to the top superstars.

  • @ indicine team

i agree with you but you have to admit that gadar hysteria was unquestionable as i read somewhere that in punjab people liked gadar to that extent that cinema halls started their first show at 6a.m, it is not a small thing.

I was just a little kid at that time and still remember that gadar hysteria.

  • Ce cross 200cr due to deepika, rohit sheety and eid factor Not bcoz of srk only. Now deepika is a crowd puller actress. Look at ramleela passes 100cr bcoz of dips. Take one more example dhoom 3 one man show aamir aamir and one an only aamir results are in front of u -275 cr.

  • SRK also tops when it comes to Most Classics in the list with 5 movies (Devdas, Veer-Zaara, Kal Ho Na Ho, Chak De, My Name is Khan) followed by Aamir with 3 (Lagaan, TZP and 3 Idiots)

  • @Romance New_yr or Romance At_Expiry! OMG! Biggest Star on the Earth? 3.5 Billion Fans of SRK? What are you smoking?? Total World Population is 7 Billions around. And half of them are SRK fans? If so, what is he doing in Bollywood? He should have gone to Hollywood, Na? Yet, he still needs to Chaad Ranikanth Ka Talway to attract Tamil audiences to theatre.
Indeed, I have no words to express how deluded, ignorant and plain stupid you are!! Way to go, SRK fan!

  • @Indicine, if you see through a different angle, the result will be different. By the way, have you included HRithik in KKKG? It was as much Amitabh’s and Hrithik’s film as SRK’s.

  • Here we present before you the UnOfficial Remakes of Shah Rukh Khan, though rip off would be a better word to describe it as the original films were never officially credited and neither were the rights taken. Many of you would be surprised at certain names appearing in the list.

  • @indicine u should block comment section for this type of post.otherwise there will be fan war like on k3 collection etc..

  • @alok nath Loved your comment the best after 3 pages of interpretation/ manipulation/ subjectivity etc etc….!

Just looking at the article again its nice to see Sunny Deols Gadar there for 2001….. Those of us with memories dating back to the last millennium will remember Gadar fondly with nostalgia- 2001 Sunny came back in a Big Big Way…! Today that may not happen as stars need constant limelight but 2001 was an amazing yr indeed. It was Gadar mania everywhere… That film along with 3 idiots stand out as landmark films to be remembered for decades to come.

@indicine You selling Gadar short- 4 cr in footfalls was historic then. ok it was the era of the single screen and perhaps if the film released today it may not look attractive to the multiplex audience but still I would say it will easily earn 200 cr plus… We will never know for sure as certain films are right for the time of release like Sholay 75, HAHK 94 or Gadar 2001 but even at 50/50 ratio those films will be huge even today…!

  • @romance expiry 3.7 billion lungiwalas… in the world…saachi…? Oh dear poor Paglapur must be over populated and heavily polluted by now….!

  • @anand, we ve seen that pathetic list quite often. And if u count every film in which one scene looks remotely similar to a certain scene in another movie, I can name all films done by all actors including aamir and especially virgin as copies as 1 or 2 scenes would sometimes be in common with other scenes of other movies. U like Virgin, that’s fine. Don’t go talking nonsensical rubbish and copy paste lists from others.

  • highest grossers (2000 to 2013)- salman 4, srk 3, aamir 3, hrithik 3..
    highest grossers (1989 to 1999)- salman 4, srk 2, aamir 2
    total- salman 8, srk 5, aamir 5

  • INDICINE UP TO NOW NO ANSWER TO MY QUESTION…..WHO MAKE. DECISION TO MAKE THE PRICE TICKET HIGH OR LOW ? THE ACTOR…THE PRODUCER…THE CINIMA OWNER OR THE DISTRIBUTORS ? IM NOT FROM INDIA..PLEASE EXPLAIN IT TO ME…HIGHLY APPRICIATED..THANKS..

    • @paady, the exhibitors decide. The ticket prices weren’t too low, it was about 10-15% lower at select multiplexes. Won’t even make 10% difference to overall collections.

  • Aamir : with more ratio n mix of both critically n commercially acclaimed movies.

Salman : The unpredictable but have been Rock solid due to strong fan base despite a career low n some flops. Expect the unexpected with Salman. A box office jaggernaut, a mass hysteria whatever. Every time people wrote him off and said he is finished he came back strongly. Tere Naam, Partner & Dabangg have been turning points in his career. Will continue to rule people hearts !!!!!!

Srk : has been steady n consistent. The king of Romance but not of bollywood. Highly business minded n will do anything for self benefit. There was a time when he ruled and there was no one close to his competition but todays business dynamics have changed the scenario n there is a new box office king every month. But still kudos to srk for what he has achived.
NOTE : Personally I have nothing against SRK but his fans attitude towards other Khans made post comments against srk. Srkians if you expect respect then start giving same to other fans.

Hrithik : The reigning superstar n probably only one who is a tough competition to Khan trio. The most talented n complete actor. I am sure he will rule bollywood once all three Khans crosses 50.

Akshay/Ajay : Both careers has been through ups & down but after so many years in industry they have made their mark. If Ajay is finest actor then Akshay is darling of masses. If Ajay can do Golmaal, Singham, Zakhm & Deewangee then Akshay can do Khiladi, Hera Phera, Special 26 & Ajnabee. If there were no Khans & Hrithik then these two wud have ruled Bollywood.

Emraan Hashmi, Ranbir Kapoor & Shahid Kapoor have made their own identities n can be superstars too. I enjoy watching all three.

Last but not least, The total years of supremacy Khans showed will be written forever. I dont think such era will come again in Bollywood in future. I like all the 3 Khans, you have inspired generations in last 20 years !!!!!!

  • correction to the my above comment

    total- salman 9, srk 5, aamir 5

  • @indicine It was quarter to 2am where you were n most likely you been in the office all day but that wasnt a rationale reply to ‘paaddii’….!

10% in a game of 100crores plus earnings makes a big difference to the small distributors- could be difference between a loss or break even scenario.

  • media is not saying that d3 has broken the record of ce.
but saying that d3 has broken the record of k3 and ce.
i think you haven’t seen that saky.

  • picture this-a man with no cinematic background from a modest,middle-class family with no spectacular attributes-barring his stupendous willpower and compulsive hardwork has reached the top of his world in his own sense_he has billions of fans worldwide-morrocco,malaysia,the middle east, germany, america and europe-he has fans even in bollywood and its virgin markets like Poland and indonesia-haters get a life-national geographic made two documentaries on him-describing him as the biggest superstar on the planet-if you hatred is just because of envy, then remembewr_it takes guts and gumption to be what srk is-india and its biggest filmstar-a person who became the biggest from nothingness-unlike aamir and salman who became big milking the cream out of their respective dynasties.i was, will, and will always be an srkian-haters go hang yourselves.

  • in 2006, munnaibhai grossed 71 cr and krish only grossed 69. so how is it krrish on the second place and munnai bhai in the 3rd place? this article is about the higher gross right? not the bigger hit?.

And in 2012 both JTHJ and Barfi grossed 120 cr. so why barfi isn’t in the list ? why only JTHJ?

  • actually it has already proved SRK as the KING by considering most successes.so don’t fights.because akshay is that star who never care about flops.amir is such star he is the most feared person for flop, which we call him a lake of self confident man for choosing script script like family planning, took 1-3 years for a film.so success for amir films a negligible thing who has done only 11 films in 13 years.if aamir fans will claim he had more success ratio, than let’s count the whole career, where aamir gave 45%flops,where SRK only 30%.so both critically and BO success is not a big deal for amir.

before saying these things 1st sorry to salman fans for saying these truths.salman still is not counting in actor’s list rather than a entertainer.most of his successes only depended on sooraj barjatya’s multistarrer family drama films, david dhawan’s multistarrer comedy films and one and only south remakes the almighty of salman includes disgusting fights especially(because tere naam a average).so acting is totally banned in his films by him.

so amir-salman’s era started actually from 2008-2013 through south remakes.also if we exclude multistarrer movies like dhoom series,no entry(less screen space for salman like special appearance).then both SRK and salman has 3highest grossers,hr and amir has 2highest grossers.if we consider only south remakes, then only SRK and hr are at top.but more ever SRK has highest 2nd highest grosser and top5 movie grosser along with 3highest grosser with out big franchise and south remakes, made him the true KING OF BOLLYWOOD.more over his consistency from 2000-2013(besides 2009,no SRK film) which also made him the highest worldwide collection achieving credit among adding all movies of all actors from 2000-2013.

if we furthur consider 90?s,then also we will find SRK as the KING OF BOLLYWOOD.the one and only consistent hit and never came back actor from 1991-2013 who never gave bollywood to crap south remakes.who has highest hits% and least flop% and also his 22 international blockbusters,to which no one even dare to enter, due to which
bollywood globalized, also his the critically acclaimed best actor o from 1991-2013.

what bollywood wants more other having this GREAT LEGEND,from all facts it is cleared SRK ruled bollywood domestic, overseas, worldwide single handedly.what more proof is needed to prove him THE KING.for that he is called THE KING BOLLYWOOD and he is the TRUE KING OF BOLLYWOOD forever.(ALL had said by me are eternal truths and I have no disrespect for any actor).

respect every actor and watch all actor’s movies and enjoy bollywood cinema, thank you.

  • It’s so good to see hindi films doing so well…From 38 crores in 2000 being highest to around 285 crores in 2013, we surely have come a long way. Now if we could just improve the content (storylines) of our films, it will do us a lot of good

  • @sss You talk a lot about mythsn urban legends…! Nonsense like “Aamir n Salman era only started from 2008” so what was HAHK 1994 in your viewpoint- a non occurence- media created frenzy about nothing. How about Raja Hindustani 1996… Never really happened… QSQT or MPK in late 80’s dont count bcoz Bollywood only begun when Sarkar arrived in Gabbar attire in Deewana 1992…?

And this king of overseas nonsense, which Sarkar film tops the records if 3 idiots and Dhoom 3…? Worldwide list- does Thakur have a film in Top Spot…? If no then how come, hes king after sll aint he…! Stop talking nonsense- you can call Sarkar Of Paglapur the King Of Lungis or Thakur of Chennai the Youtube King but BoxOffice King he arent and hasnt been since 2007…!

  • moreover, the list shows how consistent srk has been-his movies have always done well irrespective of how bollywood has generally done in that particular period. He has been really versatile as well-he became a rage with landmark films like baazigar and darr-then did cult romantic films in ddlj, dil to pagal hai ,kuch kuch hota hai ,veer zaara,om shanti om,rab ne bana di jodi and jab tak hai jaan.besides this,he also fared well in intense roles as in devdas, dil se,kabhi alvida naa kehna and anjaam.these were aptly mixed with family entertainers like Kabhi kushi kabhi gum,kal ho naa ho,chalte chalte, main hoon naa and chennai express.his repertoire also boasts of successful niche films like SWADES,MNIK AND OBVIOUSLY,CHAK DE-INDIA.SUCH RANGE OF ROLES-EVEN SEEN IN PAHELI AND KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA-SHOWS WHY HE WAS,IS,AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST.HIS NEXT LINE-UP:IS ALSO PRETTY DIVERSE WITH HAPPY NEW year, Raees and Fan being as different as chalk and cheese-a true legend and inspiration-he also has achieved success on television with serials like Fauji,Circus, etc.he also is a reigning in brand endorsements, among bollywood celebrities-and an international face with TAG HAEUR.
