Babaji Ka Thullu’s Happy New Year Review

So i went to the theatre last evening with 2 different mindsets- The trailer was mediocre but indicine rated it 4 stars,so i was quite sceptical about the film.
I will be writing a hort review here coz no one likes to read a long one i guess.

STORY:Story of HNY is almost same as that of Dhoom 3 but with a different premise..the only difference being in D3 aamir was avenging for Jackie Shroff and here srk is taking revenge from Jackie shroff! still the story is pretty decent considering it is a Farah khan film.

DIRECTION:Farah Khan does an appreciable job as HNY is consistently engaging enough.Yes there are sequences that could have been avoided.Fight sequences were overstretched ones and neither appealing.

CINEMATOGRAPHY:HNY has been shot very well.Right from the first scene it gives a look of a big budget film, dubai has been captured well.

PERFORMANCES:SRK is as usual brilliant in this film, does well in emotional scenes but it is Abhishek Bachchan and Sonu Sood who are fab. Both are outstanding in their roles.Boman is also very good.Deepika is’nt as quite good as she was in CE but still does a commendable job.Vivaan is decent in his short role while Jackie Shroff is menacing enough for a villain.

MUSIC:Though many might disagree here but Satakli was the song i enjoyed the most followed by Manwaa lage and Lovely.Overall songs are decent and look good on big screen.

I was also elated to see “Babaji ka thullu” being said thrice. Also we get to see two of our indicine visitors in HNY.We get a glimpse of our dear Navin uncle,he was there with the Great Britain team to take part in WDC with some broad thigh girls, yes he was the same guy who kissed Boman while swapping the rooms. Also we get to see one of the many Dynamic’s impersonation of Nipun “Ni pung from Korea”..yes he was the little guy whom SRK saved from falling!!
But all is not well in HNY.There are logical lapses which can’t be ignored and even the people sitting beside me pointed these for ex:How did Charan Grover and WDC organizers never recognized Nandu Bhide?? Also the film is too lengthy,it takes you to sit for more than 3hrs which is really tedious and bcoz this the film lacks a repeat value and which i think is now evident from its dropping collections.

But still overall HNY is a complete family entertainer, though vulgar at times but still manages to win your heart.
POSITIVES:

  • 1)Performance of the whole cast
  • 2)Comedy Scenes of Nandu Bhide(specially his stripping act)
  • 3)Music is decent
  • 4)Film looks grand
  • 5)The build up to the heist
  • 6)Vishal and Anurag’s cameo

NEGATIVES:

  • 1)Too lengthy
  • 2)Lacks repeat value
  • 3)Fight sequences are’nt appealing
  • 4)Vulgarity in a family entertainer

Nipun’s Happy New Year Review

Happy New Year, directed by Farah Khan is among the most awaited movies of the year. The director is back with her favourite superstar SRK through it. Does HNY live upto the expectation? Okay, let’s find .
Happy New Year is the story of a boxer Charlie (Shahrukh Khan) who wants to pull off the biggest robbery to take revenge of his father(Anupam Kher)’s death. For this, he creates a team with other five people: a half-deaf guy Jag(Sonu Sood),an old batchelor tammy(Boman Irani),ace-puker Nandu(Abhishek Bachchan), a geeky-hacker Rohan(Vivaan Shah) and a dancer(Mohini). To succeed in the mission, they have to take part in World Dance Compitition. So Mohini teaches them dancing and accordingly the story proceeds.

Director Farah Khan’s HNY is obviously better than her last movie Tees Maar Khan, but it’s not good either. The first half is okay with a few good intro-scenes of all stars. The second half is boring with a lots of manipulative sequences in the story.

This movie is absolutely poor in sense and logic. The plot is highly manipulative and unrealistic. Many questions will arise on your mind like “how the jury decided to select the team for final by seeing charlie rescuing the kid in a world dance compitition?” or “how Vivaan is hacking all those votes so easily that too in a selection for an international dance compitition, can it be possible?” and so on.The fighting parts between Sonu sood and the bodyguards will remind you of the fighting scenes of any b-grade typical masala film. The comic part works some times like at the time when charlie and his fans tries to learn the dance forms(where dancers use their toes only) and during time of Boman Irani’s Mom. But many times, the comedy simply doesn’t work. The chemistry between the male lead and female lead is decent to below average.

The cinematography was okay. They could have induced more beautiful locations. However, the stage design, costume design and the work of make up artists are praise-worthy.

Director Farah khan tries here the same formula as she did in OSO and TMK. In OSO and TMK,the characters were learning acting and shooting for the movie. Here, the characters learn dancing. She has induced some special appearances for comedy. But their parts never offer anything. The script is complicated with so many elements like action, comedy, romance, revenge, petriotism, dance, hacking and so on which is why the movie looks clumsy and problematic. Director Farah Khan has made this movie only for entertainment,But sadly it’s not offering much of entertainment at all. Even if I ignore the weak story, sense and logic , it hardly gives anything like we haven’t seen before in bollywood. HNY also includer many popular dialogues of old bollywood. The movie is absolutely predictable too.

The saving graces in the movie are the performances by the actors. SRK has given complete justice to his role even though the role never gives much scope for his acting. My favourite part in HNY is the entry of SRK in the end at the stage where he delivers some quotes about Indiawaale. Deepika plays the role of a non-english speaking girl. She played her part well. Abhishek Bachchan was hilarious at some moments. Best performances in HNY belong to both SRK and junior Bachchan. Boman Irani,Jacky Shroff and Vivaan shah were impressive in their parts. Sonu Sood was decent to good. His looks, physique were great though.

Music and Choreography, the two important parts of HNY are not impressive at all. Manwa lage is a nice song and the best one in the album. The other tracks are average at best. The background music works well.

So, over all, Happy New Year is a typical Farah Khan movie where you cann’t expect anything great. It exists to entertain. But to get entertained, you have to leave logic and sense and then we will find it “just satisfactory at best, not more than it”. It’s boring too. Watching such a movie for 3 hours is torturous.

So in my final words, despite having good performances and good costume and stage design,Happy New Year is clumsy, complicated, joyless, problematic, manipulative, silly and boring at some places due to its poor script. I am going with two stars. HNY is the most grandly-hyped and grandly-promoted movie. But,where is the grandeur in the movie?

Ajay Rocks’ Happy New Year Review

I walked into the theater expecting to see a decent film but I was little disappointed because it was typical Farah Khan Film.
I am not typically a huge fan of Farah Khan’s films however there were some negatives.
Of course Deepika’s accent was…indiscernible. I do not want to comment on whether her accent was good or not, but at times, it was tough to understand what exactly she was trying to say.she tried to hard to copy Meena ( her character in Chennai Express) but unfortunately she failed but at least her dancing was great.
Almost of the cast lives up to the hype except Sonu Sood. He was barely there and wasted . I’m sure this will be one of his worst roles till to date.
Shahrukhan is dashing but I’ll be honest with this one. he is not that kind of person that you will say wow when they take off their shirt ( I hope you will understand what I mean?).
Abhishek is colorful, Deepika plays a small, somewhat dull role, but the movie in general is slow, a little muddy, hard to understand, and justifies the crime completely. Sure, the robbery is against a sleazy guy, but still, the movie is about a bunch of losers who don’t have much going for them.

I’m not saying that the script was fairly well written It had a mediocre dialog and a weak plot. I personally thought that it was pretty predictable. The plot wasn’t as “smart” as the Ocean 11 and 12 but there were enough random “laugh scenes” to keep my attention until the climax of the movie when they actually attempt the heist. The first hour of the movie was without a doubt the best part of the movie because it was very entertaining.

The real problem with the film, though, is that it is actually after the first hour It did get slow in the middle but The conclusion saved the film because it was very good . There are many moments of suspense when you’ll wonder, “How will they get out of that one?” The film has a few surprises that fall under the “things aren’t always what they seem” category.

The fact that I’m even questioning the facts of the robbery shows that the film had its mind in the wrong place.I should be thinking about the great scenes with the thrill of watching Deepika,SRK and Abhishek in a love triangle. Instead, the entire film is about the planning of this heist (which, by the way, is completely and totally unbelievable). I won’t go into specifics here.

HNY Is not the greatest movie I have seen. While its not that bad, although it is sometimes lame and boring and Abhishek really does a good job. Has a few good jokes though.
There are several cameos by movie stars, including prabhu deva and Anurag.
HNY was good but its the kind of movie that you might watch one time. I wouldn’t be surprised if it crush on weekdays. I certainly won’t be watching it again, so that would be fine by me.

Sid-Original’s Happy New Year Review

Finally got to watch the so called Grandest movie of the Year thanx to my neighbors who are ardent SRKians..

Story: Our leader of the losers pack(SRK who carries a swag along with the abs) is a Boston University topper and is jobless as his dad was framed by the baddie(Jackie Shroff..disappointing!!!). He swears to take revenge on Jackie and 8 years later creates his own team of losers I.e Charlie’s Angels which has Nandu(Jr B..the star of the show), Jags(Sonu Sood good but underused), Tammy(Boman Irani..good but underused) and Rohan(Vivaan Shah..he was better in 7Khoon Maaf)..they are tutored by the dancer Mohini(DP..hot hot)..now Jaggu Dada challenges the robbers across the world to steal some diamonds from Atlantis Dubai..Charlies Angels accepts this challenge and fly to Dubai as dancers by bashing the judges of Dabbu DC aka WDC..will he succeed to steal the diamonds and bring down Jaggu Dada forms the rest of the story..

When i watched the movie I felt that it was like watching two separate movies..1st half was good which had flashes of trademark Farah Khan..2nd half was equally pathetic.. I felt Sajid Khan directed the second half as there was some low IQ scenes as well as a Humshakals angle..even the romantic track was forced and became an utter nonsense..i mean DP falls for SRK just coz he speaks fluent English.. Farah Khan was far better in MHN and OSO thanx to her simple storytelling added with grandeur.. but here she follows her brother’s method of filmmaking which contains nonsensical jokes and constant hamming and turns this movie into an utter bore.. cinematography and the sets were grand..but screenplay and direction were quite pathetic.. also lot of famous SRK dialogues were reused in this movie..for eg..the iconic Sattar minute dialogue from CDI..even the overdose of dances makes it tedious to sit for 3 hours..even the music was average as it didn’t have a chartbuster song..

Coming to performances. This was an average performance from our King..DP was okay..Jr B was the star of the show, Sonu Sood and Boman were good but underused.. Dino Morea overacts as the TV show host..there are cameos from Prabhudeva, Vishal Dadlani and others..even the little Abram looked very cute.. Overall HNY is nothing but recycled timepass..I would rather watch MHN & OSO on TV again than this.. Sigh!!!

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (half star for Jr B)

gj007’s Happy New Year Review

HAPPY NEW YEAR: A LENGHTY AFFAIR

Farah khan has a typical narrative style. She has given typical commercial movies throughout her career. TMK was tortuous but OSO and MHN were engaging movies. Sadly HNY is a stretched affair.

PLOT: Six losers participate in a dance competition with a motive of pulling off a ‘heist’. Yeah you got it. Heist has been down too many times in past few years. Not the fault of Farah but this is one of the major issues. Audience doesn’t get any freshness in the story. They have seen other stars pulling off heist, now it’s the turn of SRK.

PERFORMANCES: Nobody’s fault here. Script takes audience for granted. Plot loopholes are too many to ignore. There are few inspired moments on screen, most of them revolving around the ever puking Nandu (Abhishek Bachchan). Sadly the leading pair SRK-Deepika get stereotyped yet again! So Deepika repeats her Chennai Express heavy accent while SRK repeats lines of his previous blockbusters one after the other. Sonu Sood tries too hard to be funny, while the newbie Vivan Shah and veteran Boman Irani are wasted.

CINEMATOGRAPHY: GRAND! One word. Hands down. This lengthy affair isn’t tedious thanks to some melodious songs and brilliant locations.

EDITING: This is THE biggest blunder. Movies with wafer thin plot can still be applauded if the editing is crisp. 2 hours and 59 minutes time is just too much. It tests your patience!

MUSIC: There aren’t any chartbuster songs here, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found it quite engaging and subtle.

DIRECTION: Average. Now very bad not very good. There are some funny scenes, interesting dance sequences but the pace of the story isn’t maintained by the director. For me, the emotional scenes were flat. I laughed genuinely in funny scenes but the emotional sequences seemed forced.

FINAL VERDICT: It’s a very average movie, neither fresh like Main hoon na nor annoying like Tees Maar Khan. Actors try their level best to engage you but the dragged moments in second half are a major let-down.

  • Aarray, what is this? Review by treacherous babaji!! Too much fun!

Taking sides of srk fans? Yet they won’t support HR and Akki. He too knows K3 controversy was started by them.

  • I liked only Abhishek Sir’s Performance in entire lengthy movie. Now for hny is target Bang Bang 182 crore

  • Oops. Sorry. @indicine : you have mentioned my name. But the heading for my review is clearly not visible as you haven’t darkened it.

  • @indicine where is ma review.. ??
though I havnt written it in a formal n organised way.. still u guyz should hav published it… disappointed

  • @Anand:I am not taking their side, just my take on how i liked the film..even @Navin uncle gave it 3 stars!!!

  • @anandi. Wow thu tho liar ka dukan nikla. Keep the spirit Bro. Manipulative moron.
@nipun. Before barking on SRK for manipulation do note this
    K3 boi 171 CRORES and producers 240
    That’s around 70 CRORES
Bang bang boi 141 CRORES and producers 179
    That’s around 39 CRORES.
So two films its around 109 CRORES. Wow. Super cool

  • The occupancy of HNY has dropped by 30% from yesterday. So, the collections are expected to be around 12 Crores today!!

  • What’s Good: The actors are all
earnest and the opulent canvas sure
    works in retaining your attention.

What’s Bad: It lacks Farah Khan’s
witty streak. The heist track just
doesn’t work and the film’s second
hour is plain unconvincing. Low on the
needful IQ that could have made the
    robbery believable, the film’s thrill
tapestry was on the weaker side.

it is a half baked film that uses all the
    regular formulaic heist tools and
    naturally offers nothing unseen or
    unexpected. The predictability of the
climax was the most fatal blow for the
film. It isn’t unwatchable but horridly
    disappointing. Farah Khan has better
mettle I believe and her funda of
keeping it simple, garbed in floss
    doesn’t work this time.

  • Multi-starrer movie Happy New Year featuring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone is the film trending everywhere now.
With the hit pairing of Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukon e coupled with other stars including Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah, Farah Khan’s Happy New Year has been one of the most awaited flicks this year.
After breaking all records with Chennai Express, Shahrukh and Deepika’s pairing in Happy New Year, along with SRK’s eight-pack abs, will certainly be a pleasure for the fans.
Although, the movie Happy New Year’s storyline is not anything out of the box, but as they say, ‘When King Khan is there, have no fear’. The story of Happy New Year revolves around six loosers who decide to turn their fortune as they believe every looser gets a chance to become winner.

And in order to turn their fortune, the bunch of loosers led by Shahrukh Khan take part in an international dance competition in an attempt to rob a bank locker full of diamonds in Dubai which belongs to Jackie Shroff. While, Shahrukh Khan along with his team of awkward dancers offer silly yet interesting humour, the film also includes some high-flying action.

All the characters of Happy New Year, Shahrukh Khan as Charlie, Deepika Padukone as Mohini, Abhishek Bachchan as Nandu Bhide, Sonu Sood as Jagmohan Prakash, Boman Irani as Temhton Irani and Vivaan Shah as Rohan Singh have some different and unusual qualities which come together as a team to try the impossible. To know whether they come out victorious or remain same bunch of loosers, you will have to watch the film.
Combination of Farah Khan’s direction along with Shahrukh Khan’s charisma and Deepika Padukone’s glamour leaves little scope for the audience to give Happy New Year a miss. However, performance by other stars also seemed promising.

Happy New Year Movie Review: A Perfect Revenge Saga

Finally, the much promoted movie Happy New Year (HNY) was released on Friday! We watched the movie at 7:00PM of the first day. Let’s review the movie and talk about my experience!

The film is about a bunch of six losers (I am not saying this but the film is) trying to become winners once in their lives. Hence because they believe in the saying that every loser has a chance to become a winner!

It starts with the interpretations of the WDC (World Dance Championship) or Dabboo DC by Charlie urf Chandramohan. And then, there are the hosts (i.e. Dino Morea and a Woman) making announcements about the Dabboo DC. Every time the woman announces something, Dino Morea interprets them into Hindi. I wonder why somebody needs to interpret the announcements in Hindi if it is a Dabboo DC. If the interpretations are necessary, why not in other languages such as Russian, Mexican etc as well? After all, it is a Farah Khan film???

Then, the character of the Charlie, this time not as a joker Charlie chaplin, but as a boxer is introduced. A graduate from Boston University yet a loser and earning professions through boxing! He is introduced with a boxing match that takes in mud. In the fight, the malnourished and skeleton charlie beats big people to pulp, his one punch breaks the backbone of a man who is triple his size. The fight highlights his malnourished physique with his over grown and obvious nipples.

Then, Charan Grover (Jakie Shroff) announces on TV that he is keeping his diamonds worth hundreds of crores in the extremely secured and safe Antique Washing-Machine Turned Vault in the Hotel Atlantis in Dubai. At the same time, he announces that the Dabboo DC will be held in the hotel Atlantis. Don’t ask why somebody announces and tells others where he saves or keeps his properties such as money or diamonds literally to invite the attentions of the robbers. It is a Farah Khan film! Questioning is prohibited!!

His father (Anupam Kher), who runs a business creating sturdy lockers, is duped by the evil businessman Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff) and hurtled off to jail for a robbery he didn’t commit. Charlie’s idyllic life is destroyed and he dreams of bringing down Grover. So, as expected, the announcement by Charan attracts the attention of Charlie and he wants to revenge Charan Grover by robbing the diamonds.

Then, the character of Jagmohan or Jag (Sonu Sood) is introduced. He is an ex-army officer and retired from the army because he has lost his hearing as he tried to defuse a bomb in the army. Now, he works with Director Sajid Khan as a staff to blast dummy bombs in the film shooting. The name of Sajid Khan’s movie is called “Haa Haa Hee Hee.” This sounds really interesting and better than original movie ‘HNY’ itself. If the movie is happening, I am looking forward to it!

Then, the character of Tammy (Boman Irani), a 50+ Bachelor Babaji (Ka Thullu), expert in cracking codes and non-senile specimen of masculinity in their ‘hood’ whom sex-starved Parsi ladies lust after is introduced.

Afterwards, Rohan Singh (Vivaan Shah) or Justin Bieber Wannabe Introvert Nerd Hacker is introduced.

Then, Nandu Bhide Dimak Mein Khide (aka Abhishek Bachchan) is introduced. He is good for nothing except for the fact that he resembles Vikki Grover, the son of Charan Grover, in appearance. He is shown to frequently vomit at any time after consuming alcohol. It is absolutely disgusting for the viewers.

Tammy and Jagmohan were ex-pals of Charlie’s father. Rohan is the nephew of Jagmohan! And Nandu is a person that Charlie has met at a festival event.

Charlie, the chief loser, gathers all other four losers and assembles them as a team to pursue their dream of becoming winners. Audiences should have deja vu moments. It is exactly like the film ‘Players’ in which the film main hero gathers the people of different talents to commit robberies.

Then, they become a team and start their dance rehearsal and studying the structural map of the hotel Atlantis. They hire different dance teacher to teach them dancing! But none of them seems to be successful in making them into dancers.

But hereby, the Director Farah Khan ridiculed and insulted Saroj Khan and her choreographic skill by making fun of her songs. Again Deja Vu moment!! Alas, she even insulted the veteran Manoj Kumar in OSO!! Farah Khan, Madarr Chod Na Yarr!! It is high time for you to do so.
Then, the character of the much-awaited lead actor of the film, Mohini, is introduced. She is another loser and brothel pool dancer just trying to earn Ijjat by shaking her bootiyas, hips and two melons in the brothel. She dreams of opening a dance school for children so that they can earn Ijjat by shaking their bootiyas as well.

It feels like Mohini is a second birth of Meenamma of Chennai Express! She rapes the Tapoori Hindi Language the way she did the Tamil Language in her previous Janam! She has put Rakhi Sawant into shame!

When the Charlie meets her to make her their dance teacher and a part of their team, she immediately falls in love with him because Charlie knows how to speak English!

Alas, I also speak English. I wish some girls for me because I speak English! Till date, it has not happened to me because of that skill of mine! I don’t think it has happened to you either! It took me a lot of effort to make my GF falls for me.
Mohini even likes the insults if they are in English! She is simply BREAST-taking, HIP-notizing and CLEAVAG-ing!!

So, she has become a part of their team. And then, now they are a bunch of six losers! They get admission to the Dabboo DC representing India by conning the secret gay-couple cum Judges: Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Shekar (in cameos)!! And Public Votes were manipulated by the nerd hacker Rohan Singh in favor of their six-loser’s team.

Then, they move to Hotel Atlantis, Dubai to take part in the Dabboo DC. They have to compete with the teams from all over the world including North Korean team, Russian Team, Mexican team etc. The plot to rob the diamonds goes on as they take part in the dance championship.

The team take duplicates the finger prints of Vikki Grover sending him into anesthesia. Pretending as Vikki, Nandu, among the heavy securities, goes into the place where the Antique Washing Machine turned Vault is located. The hacker deactivates the laser shield for Nandu protecting the vault. Nandu advances to unscrew the iron shield blocking the AC Duct so that Charlie and Tammy inside via the channel. Then, Nandu leaves.

Charlier and Tammy remain inside to rob diamonds. They robbed the diamonds and soon, they are stuck ad locked in the Washing Machine as the time is up. Then, Jagmohan sends water inside the Washing Machine by switching the channel of the Water Pipeline. The Washing Machine is now full of water and Tammy and Charlie swim upwards and come out of the washing machine by blasting its cover with bombs.

Then, they participate in the final of Daboo DC. They win.
Charan Grover and Vikki Grover are accused of robbing their own diamonds and imprisoned for lifetime in Dubai.

The team of the six losers has now become a team of six winners. Because they believed in the saying haar kutta ki din hota hai! As simple as that! The Revenge is taken!

The Revenge is Taken! The Revenge is Taken but not by Charlie against Charan Grover but by the great Farah Khan against the Sarkar for attacking her husband from behind at a party few years ago.

Leave your whole brain at home if you want to watch the film! It is painfully lengthy and boring! If Dabangg 2, Bodyguard and some Akki films are illogical and senseless, this film is set to squarely defeat all these movies in terms of stupidity, silliness and senseless.

If Bang Bang has too many action scenes, this one has too many silly dance scenes. Last but not the least, the basic plot of the movie is plagiarized from Ocean’s 11.
I predict it will crash badly from Monday onward after initial craze on the weekends!

    Positives:
    -Maanwa Laage Song
    -Some Boman Irani Jokes
    -Prabhu Deva’s Cameo
    -Gauri Khan’s Cameo
    -AbRam Khan’s Cameo
-Fight Scene with a Korean Guy on the top of the Hotel Atlantis

    Negatives:
-No Original Dialogues, All Dialogues are refurbished from his earlier films
    -No Story
    -Bad songs and Music
-Forced Chemistry between Charlie and Mohini
    -Slapstick Sajid Khan Style Jokes
-Fake and Over-the-Top Drama and Emotions
-Fight Scenes that will prove Newton’s Laws wrong
    -Malnourished Greased Skeleton Show
    -Sajid Khan’s Cameo
-Mishmash of Players, Cash and Ocean’s 11
-Refurbished dialogues of the ancient time
    -Disco lights throughout the film
    -Many others!

    Rating: 1.45/5*****
