Happy New Year Music Review

As India gears up for its biggest festival of the year, Diwali, the movie industry is all set to unleash its most lavish product. Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ is going to be Shahrukh Khan’s 11th (Yes, you read it right) Diwali release in his illustrious career spanning more than two decades.

The director-actor duo are coming together for the third time after the dual super success of Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007). In terms of starcast and production values, it cannot get bigger than ‘Happy New Year’ as Deepika Padukone is enjoying the peak of her career and Shahrukh’s last film Chennai Express went on to be the highest grosser of all time. The presence of versatile music director duo of Vishal-Shekhar has raised the bar of expectations as the evergreen songs of ‘Om Shanti Om’ are still fresh in the minds of music lovers. Let us dwell inside the album and see what is in store for us.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

Indiawaale: The Happy New Year Music album opens with ‘Indiawaale’ which has been sung by Vishal Dadlani, KK, Shankar Mahadevan and Neeti Mohan. The promo of the song is all over the television and internet already. The track boasts of highly energetic beats and foot tapping music. It’s designed for stage dance shows which apparently are part of the film’s theme. Lyrics by Irshad Kamil are simple yet effective. The song has grand visuals but the music at best is ordinary. (3/5)

Manwa Laage: Next up we have ‘Manwa Laage’ which is a complete shift from ‘India Waale’. Sung in the voices of Shreya Ghoshal and current phenomena Arijit Singh, ‘Manwa Laage’ is a soulful melody. The song reminds you of the ‘Titli’ song from ‘Chennai Express’ but that’s mainly because of the same lead pair involved. Irshad Kamil excels in the lyrics department. The promo is already creating waves in the social networking sites and it surely deserves all the applause. Not quite in the ‘Main Agar Kahoon’ league, but very good nonetheless. (4/5)

Satakli: ‘Satakli’ is also one of the songs along with ‘Indiawaale’ and ‘Nonsense Ki Night’ which is heard in the theatrical trailer –‘Radhe Radhe Bolo Jai Kanhaiya Laal Ki’. Sukhwinder Singh has sung some classic songs for SRK like ‘Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan’, ‘Chak De India’, ‘Haule Haule’ just to mention a few. He performs well, as usual, but the singer is only as good as the song he is given. (2.5/5)

Lovely: Dr. Zeus of the famous Punjabi song ‘Kangana’ has been roped in to arrange the music for ‘Lovely’ which is sung by Kanika Kapoor of ‘Baby Doll’ fame. The track starts with Arabian vocals but soon Punjabi flavor takes over completely. The song has got a lot of scope for dance and it remains to be seen what Farah-Deepika has in store for the viewers. Million dollar question is can Farah surpass her own ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’, which eventually turned out to be bigger than her last film itself? (3.5/5)

Nonsense Ki Night: Mika is everywhere. Fresh from the chartbuster success of ‘Jumme Ki Raat’, Mika is in his elements in ‘Nonsense Ki Night. Lyrics are filled with funny English one-liners which presumably will be mouthed by Abhishek Bachchan. The number is catchy and is sure to climb up the popularity charts if the film does well at the box office. (3/5)

Dance Like A Chammiya: The album is filled with dance numbers. Here comes yet another peppy track sung in the voice of dance-number queen Sunidhi Chauhan. Designed for Deepika, this could well be the introductory track for her character of Mohini. (3/5)

Sharabi: Vishal-Shekhar try their hands at a typical Punjabi dance number ‘Sharabi’ in the voice of Manj Musik. The track reminds you of the superhit Punjabi song from Dijeet-Honey Singh ‘Lak 28 Kudi Da’ as the vocals and music arrangements are similar. Lyrics are average, but the song is decent. (3/5)

To complete the album, we have the remix/club versions of ‘IndiaWaale’ and ‘Lovely’ (‘Kamlee’). Medley of all the songs and the instrumental theme song is also part of the album.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

The movie is about dance shows and the grandeur is clearly visible in the song promos. Music is designed as per the theme of the movie. Although the album cannot be termed as musically outstanding, and nowhere close to as good as ‘Om Shanti Om’ (the comparisons are inevitable, isn’t it?) it still has a lot of potential. The songs can grow big-time with the box-office performance of the movie which should not be a tough ask given SRK’s foolproof record during the festival of lights.

  • Is that called Music? Then I consider the one’s of Singham Returns & Raja Natwarlal to be far better xD LOLLLLL!

  • Album is not upto mark honestly speaking but farahs form is not great as her last film album was moderately okayish n that was thanks to ‘sheilas’ video…

  • @hindustani 2:58pm

Brrrrilliant review- short sweet n straight to the point- no messing about- loved it..,, heres hoping that the sites critiK nipin kumar takes a leaf out of your book for his future hypocritical reviews…!

  • Mistakenly watched the trailer & Indiawaale song of HNY on TV. I smashed the remote control & removed SRK & Abhishek Bachchan from my ‘Celeb’ List.

  • Nonsense Ki Night is a huge let down- mika roxXxXx in most songs but huge let down here…. Maybe he realised song was nonsense so hence gave it little effort vocally speaking…!

  • @Legend Khan : When you have already declared the verdict of HNY – from posters to trailer – as flop, then I don’t understand the point of you, posting more than half dozen comments on every article related to HNY :)
I have seen maximum 1 or 2 comments of yours on any page related to PK and Amir, but you are showing such a huge interest in HNY.
    Scene kya hai BOSS? ;-)

  • Indicine 3/5

Hmm … Maine sirf Manvaa lage suna pasand nai aya mujhe. Seriously. Not excited about HNY music. Don’t make fun of himself SRKians. Indiawaale has flopped already, crossed less than 2M Views on youtube even 16 days….Movie se toh nahi pr film ki music se expectations thi… Satyanash ho Farah aur Vishal Shekhar ka.

    My rating 1.5/5

  • Nice review…

3-3.5 is good for hny music review..
india waale,,manwa laage both have captured my attention..
now i will wait for videos of other songs..
for happy new year to be successful – i think these 2 points will be the keys…

1 – the world dance competition – it will be interesting to see how this competition is picturised on screen as it will have show case of Atlantis,,dubai.

2 – the heist, robbery theme – as it is said in promo by srk that – ye kahani hai duniya ki sabse badi chori ki..something special i am expecting as people will start comparing the robbery sequence with dhoom 2..so hope it turns out to be a master piece..

so acc to me the robbery and the dance competition – these both are keys of hny to be success on boxoffice after first 3 days as reviews will strongly centered on it..

till then,,good luck all srk hny fans..

  • @aman mathur., epic reply…
ab fati hogi uski aur srk haters ki….
hny music is gud and will become grt after music videos

  • for Qtiya babaji crap like hangover and chumme ki raat were extraoridinary and ALBUM of the year is just average… Lovely, manva laage, satakli and Indiawaale are born chartbusters with Manva laage breaking all records on Yotube

  • Simple, I don’t want to rate I have liked only one song: Manwa Laage. The rest….I am sorry. I don’t want to hurt anyone!

  • @sickrum
Hangover and jumme ki raat are better than all the songs of HNY..no point favouring Salman fans but that is an established truth…
U have gone crazy..seriously this is the album of the year..lol

  • @babaji,shut your hand up and return to jadoopur at once.HNY IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR.
