Happy Birthday Aamir Khan: The legend turns 51

Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan turns 51 today. The actor has had one of the longest careers in Bollywood, as he made his debut back in 1988, a year before Salman Khan and nearly 4 years before Shah Rukh Khan. Even after 27 years in the industry, Aamir remains one of the biggest crowd pullers – if not the biggest.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak marked the acting debut of Aamir, a film where he was cast opposite the beautiful Juhi Chawla. The Mansoor Khan directed film went on to be a blockbuster at the box office and Aamir became a teenage heartthrob. Produced by his father and directed by his uncle, QSQT went on to win 8 Filmfare awards (including Best Debut for Aamir) and two national awards – Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Aamir received a ‘Special mention’ certificate.

It was the most prolific period in Aamir’s career as he did 2-4 films every year. In fact, between 1989 and 1992, Aamir did more films than he has done in the most successful phase in his career i.e between 2005 – 2016. Very few films did well at the box office and Aamir’s success ratio during this period was poor.

Post QSQT and until the end of the century, Aamir only had two films that were big hits at the box office – Raja Hindustani (which remains one of the biggest films of his career and arguably his biggest ‘mass’ hit) and Dil. A cult classic like Andaz Apna Apna was a washout at the box office and classics like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander weren’t hugely successful.

The founder of the 100, 200, 300 and every other ‘club’ in Bollywood, wasn’t quite the star that he once was. Quality-wise, most of his films during the 90s did not meet the ‘Aamir Khan standard’ and commercially too his success ratio was low.

Reflecting on those films, Aamir says it’s his failures that turned out to be the biggest learnings in his career. It’s those very films that helped him gain the ‘script sense’ that’s currently unmatched by any other star in the country.

“There are a lot of films I did that didn’t make me happy, but it is also true that you don’t always get success despite all efforts. When I look back and see these films, I feel that I’ve learnt a lot from my unsuccessful films. Those are my biggest learnings. My failures have taught me as much as my successful films, and they are equally special to me” Aamir said as he celebrated 25 years in the industry, back in December 2013.

Today, as the legendary Aamir Khan turns 51, the actor remains the biggest inspiration for many in the country, including co-stars and other actors in the industry. The effort that he has put into his latest film ‘Dangal’ is unprecedented and even at the very peak of his career, Aamir spends a year losing and gaining weight for his roles. Putting his health and life at risk to make his characters look convincing on screen.

It’s his hard work, dedication and knowing the pulse of the audience that has taken him several notches above everyone else in the industry – atleast as far as the ‘trust’ and ‘quality’ factors are concerned. Even if Aamir releases a film without a trailer, the audience would still queue up outside theatres in big numbers, expecting no less than a classic.

We wish Aamir Khan a very happy birthday and hope he continues to entertain the audience for many more years to come. We also pray for his good health and happiness.

1989- Raakh ( A film which got critical acclaimed and only national award to Aamir)
1990- Dil (a popular film of that year, superb love story)
1991- Dil hai ki manta nahi (again a classic)
1992- Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (Classic films based on sport, again a fantastic performance of Aamir)
1993- Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Me( lovely family comedy film with Aamir-Juhi fabulos performance)
1994- Andaz Apna Apna( Cult Comedy, highest rated Bollywood film on Imdb)
1995- Rangeela (Classic,His portrayed as a tapori is considered as one of the greatest performance of him )
Akele Him Akele Tum- This is a special film though a box office failure but has fantastic story and great performance
1996- Raja Hindustani- All time blockbuster (for me the least good films of Aamir in 90s that unfortunately becomes biggest success for him in 90s but must say Aamir-Karishma performance as well as Music of the movie was great)
1997- Ishq (a popular comedy film having 4 acting powerhouses Aamir,Ajay,Juhi and Kajol in a film)
1998- Ghulam (a well made film, Aamir singing debut ‘Aati kya khandala’ and his scene running towards the train is epic)
1999- A special year when he has 3 fabulous movies Sarfarosh,Earth and Mann though Earth & Mann was a failure but they were good movies especially Earth (Aamir performance in Sarfarosh, earth and Mann were fantastic, I loved these 3 films very much)
2000- Mela (nothing to talk about)
2001- Lagaan and DCH (two classics of Aamir who won national awards as best film same year, Aamir wasn’t delivered good films in 2000 but he compensated that with Lagaan and Dil chahta h, nothing more required to him)
2002- No film but a year when Aamir-Reena got separated.
2003- No film, Aamir got Padam Shree Award.
2004- No film,Though Aamir’s Lagaan documentary got the national awards for adventures process of film making.
2005- Mangal Pandey( not a boxoffice success but Aamir comeback and his looks got huge buzz, the film broke every box office opening records that time which is rare for a biopic that too in 2005, Aamir performance was also praise worthy)
2006- Rang De Basanti and Fanaa (both were huge hits and RDB will remain a historical film in Bollywood )
2007- Taare Zameen Par(no word to describe how good the film was, this movie set Aamir apart from all superstars for many, a dream director debut).
2008- Ghajini ( First film to cross 100 cr mark, made Christmas a popular festival time to release films, a super revenge saga)
2009- 3 idiots( first to cross 200cr film, still waiying for a person who say that 3i is a average film)
2010- Perpli live (a fantastic low budget non starcast superhit), Asmir awarded as Padam Bhushan.
2011- Delhi Belly and dhobhi Ghar (both were highly critically acclaimed and loved by targeted audience, Delhi Belly set the trend to popular a movie through A rated content openely)
2012- Talaash (Comeback as an Actor with critical acclaimed talaash which were commercial success too)
2013- Dhoom 3( Created a dhoom worldwide, first film to cross 300cr gross in domestic and 500cr ww).
2014- PK (First film to cross 300cr net ,400cr gross and 600cr ww, highly critically acclaimed popular film of last year).
2015- No films this year, only in news for Dangal. But his comment on intolerance became ths biggest sensation of that year (personally i was also hurt). The impact was so huge that it stopped Dilwale to cross PK worldwide business last year according to some experts.

Conclusion- Apart from 2000 & 2015 not a single year of Aamir (when he acted or produced any film) when Aamir didn’t given any significant contribution to Indian Cinema, such a remarkable career of him.A huge salute from me to One and Only Aamir Khan.

I am not his biggest fan but its been overwhelming for me that here on Indicine my name comes first as an Aamir fan by users here. Thanks guys and Indicine for that.

  • Yes i agree aamir khan’s career in the 90s wasnt great. He was doing well but not completely satisfactory. Most of his films were just hits and semi hits despite many of them being superb. Perhaps he was ahead of his time

  • Fully agree with indicine, though I like more srk than aamir but I have more trust in aamir’s movies after rdb, whenever he releasing his movies, I watch it first show first day in my country, cuz I know he always makes movies with some message and content oriented. That line qbout trailer was superb. People does not need trailer for aamir’s movies, his name is enough for promotion movie as quality and content oriented. Happy birthday ace khan, all the best.

  • Happy Birthday Mr.Perfectionist.

You know you are great when James Cameron wants to work with you.
You know that your work is legendary when the likes of Tom Hanks,Jackie Chan,Robert Downey Jr,Arnold admire you.

If choosing a good script and delivering a mind boggling performance is an art, then Aamir is a Picasso of it.
”Success ke peeche mat bhago, excellence ka peecha karo” suits the legendary actor very well.

The epitome of success, excellence and perfection turns 51 today.
Truly a method actor.A mini acting instituition in himself.
The 2007 released cult ‘Taare Zameen Par’ made me his fan.Not a 2 hours long bollywood film,TZP was beyond that.

Happy Birthday Sir.May you continue to shine and give us glory through your movies and social work.Waiting so anxiously for your upcoming movie Dangal.

    #Love. j. :)

  • Sorry ,I don’t hve good things to say on Amir’s birthday due to his Losers fan like @REW1 who unnecessary Try to Bash akshay kumar everytime .
