Ghajini Overseas Box office Report

While most expected Ghajini to break all records in India, the film was not expected to do great business overseas.

Action films dont work in key international markets like US and UK; the only action flick to do ‘Blockbuster’ business overseas was Dhoom 2. Other action films like Don – Tashan starring big stars like Akshay Kumar and Shahrukh Khan, haven’t really set the international box-office on fire like most of their Romantic films.

Ghajini though has turned out to be an exception. It has done fantastic business overseas, especially in the US. The first weekend in the US is about $1.38 million, second only to Hrithik Roshan’s Jodha Akbar which did $1.6 million this year. In comparison SRK’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has done just $1.67 million in more than 2 1/2 weeks since it released on 12th December. On the other hand, in the UK the business isnt highly impressive, but quite good taking into consideration that action films dont have a huge market in UK.

Here are some of the detailed figures from the overseas market.

United States – $13,87,534 (Rs 6,72,95,399) from 82 screens
United Kingdom – £3,18,538 (Rs 2,26,95,832) from 49 screens
Australia – A$254,000 (Rs 86,33,750)
Middle East – $9,20,000 (4,46,20,000) Highest ever for a Bollywood Movie!

So with 6.72 crores from US, 2.26 crores from UK, 0.86 crores from Australia and 4.5 crores from the Middle East.. Ghajini has done almost Rs 14.5 crores from the 4 major international markets.

The Aamir Khan starrer also released simultaneously in Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, South Africa, Mauritius, New Zealand, Fiji, Hong Kong and Singapore.. Breaking all records for previous Aamir Khan films!

The makers claim the movie has done almost $4 Million (20 crores) purely in the form of Overseas business from all the 20+ countries that it released in, which is brilliant!

All said and done, the most amazing fact is… Ghajini was a one-man show! Asin was an unknown face and A.R. Murugadoss, the director, was also making his Bollywood debut.

So the credit for all the mass hysteria since 24th December should go to Aamir Khan – The only star of Ghajini, who has just churned out the biggest Money-Spinner in the history of the Indian Film Industry. Star power at its best.. Take a bow Aamir!
