A Gentleman Movie Review

Raj and DK have found quite the critical success with their films such as 99, Shor in the City, Go Goa Gone. But they’re yet to taste big commercial success. Will they finally be able to get out of that patch with A Gentleman? The trailers have promised a high octane, action filled thriller with a tinge of comedy. Will it live up to the expectations? Let’s dissect.

Story: Gaurav (Sid 1) dreams of settling down with Kavya (Jacqueline), the woman of his dreams, but she prefers a man who’s more adventurous and willing to take risks. He soon stands to lose everything when a case of mistaken identity rocks his once-happy life. Rishi (Sid 2) is a contract killer who is on a mission to which can hamper both Rishi and Gaurav’s lives. Do both discover each other? Does Gaurav get Kavya? Watch the movie to find out.

Screenplay and Direction: Raj and DK get their magic working once and again, more and less to the same extent which made 99 work on so many levels. The first half of A Gentleman takes time to set up the lives and the stories of all the characters but it is after the interval which thrusts the movie into next gear. A Gentleman can get quite jarring and boring during all the prolonged action scenes but the comedic scenes and the light hearted treatment of the movie keeps the movie very entertaining throughout. Raj and DK do a good job with making the type of film they wanted to.

Technically, A Gentleman has been given the canvas of a big actioner which is visible on screen as the film looks huge in scale keeping in mind the medium budget. The cinematography is top notch as the Miami and Mumbai scenes are shot with a lot of elan. The editing is quite nifty. The background score of A Gentleman suits the nature of the film. A Gentleman also boasts of solid songs which should not have been revealed in the trailers. Bandook Meri Laila, Chandralekha are decent songs.

Acting: A Gentleman relies on the shoulders of Sidharth Malhotra from start to finish. His behavioural changes from being Gaurav to being Rishi is what makes the film convincing. He gives it his best shot and if his looks were not so distractingly good, he would be appreciated a lot more in Bollywood. He is in fine form here and we hope he kicks on from this film and goes on to do a lot more films where we get to see his acting range. Jacqueline Fernandez is cute as she always is and her accent is reasonably explained in the film which doesn’t take the viewer away from the film. Suneil Shetty does a cameo and it was a nice surprise seeing him.

Conclusion: A Gentleman is a solid entertainer which is not like other illogical Bollywood commercial films because it is rooted in realism. It is also a funny movie without getting too much into slapstick humour. The story takes some time to get going and the action scenes can be quite prolonged but in the end the payoff is worth it for both the characters in the film and for the viewers. If you’re in the mood for some lighthearted fun, then A Gentleman should be right up your alley.
