‘Father of Contemporary Indian Cinema’ title for Yash Chopra

As part of a special tribute, late filmmaker Yash Chopra will be conferred the title of “Father of Contemporary Indian Cinema” at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).

Celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema, the festival will honour him for for his strong ties with the region and constant support to the festival.

The award and honour will be received by Yash Chopra’s wife Pamela.

“Yashji had a close connection with the IFFM. He was happy to support it as he believed in promoting Indian films in foreign countries,” Pamela told in a statement.

“I am grateful to the festival and the Victorian government for this honour and happy to travel to Melbourne to collect the same and keep the support and connection alive,” she added.

Even the Agora cinema in Melbourne is being renamed as the Yash Chopra Cinema. It will be inaugurated by Pamela May 6.

Mitu Bhowmick Lange, IFFM festival director, said: “We have been fortunate to enjoy the support and guidance of Yash Chopra.”

Two of Yash Chopra’s productions – “Salaam Namaste” (2005) and “Chak De! India” were shot in Melbourne. The filmmaker died last year.

This will be the second edition of IFFM, which will be held May 3-22 this year.

  • Not indian cinema, may be in Hindi cinema. K.Balachander should be the father of contemporary Indian cinema.

  • Yash chopra conferred as “Father of Contemporary Indian Cinema” and in future Aditya chopra will be conferred as “Son of Contemporary Indian Cinema” lol

  • How rapidly the Indian Cinema gets changed.

Every one is talking about Yash Chopra & giving tribute.
No doubt he was a legend but in all this how many rememberd the guy who started Indian Cinema Mr.Dadasaheb Phalke.?

I doubt even todays celebs like Katrina,Anushka,Ranveer Singh etc knows anythink about Dadasaheb.

People like Dilip Kumar & Amitabh Bacchan gets all attention & no one care about first supestar of bollywood Rajesh Khanna.
Even now he gets ignored after his death also.
No one talking to tribute him, everyone is busy in tributing Yash Chopra.

Its very sad think that such people gets ignored who deserve the hounor & people like Yash Chopra gets lots of attention just because he belongs to a big banner.

  • I don’t know why they are giving so much importance to yash chopra. i mean he is a good director, but he hasn’t done anything extraordinary comparing to directors like Raj Kapoor and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. and some of his mvoies became iconic due to salim-javed duo. seems to me these award shows are taking advantages from the death of yash chopra.

  • Yash chopra has given so many hit films be it action or love story. Also his production house have gifted new talented directors, actors and technitian to movie industry. Raj kapoor and hrishikesh mukerjee are great directors and equal to yash chopr but they didnt got the oppurtunity to deal with todays modern generation subject coz they passed away long time back. Thats why yash chopra is honoured with father of contemporary indian cinema.
