Fashion Movie Review

Madhur Bhandarkar movies are always something to look forward to. The acclaimed director of movies like Chandni Bar, Corporate, Page 3 is back with his take on the Fashion world. The actors have been carefully picked. Priyanka Chopra plays the main lead with Kangana Ranaut, Mugdha Godse, Arbaaz Khan, Samir Soni and Arjan Bajwa in supporting roles. Does the National Award winning director deliver, with such huge expectations riding on the film?

Fashion is about Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra), a girl from Chandigarh with huge dreams of becoming a super model. Like hundreds who land up in Mumbai everyday to pursue their dreams, Meghna against the wish of her father goes to the city of dreams. With great looks, right attitude and the help of a few friends from the Fashion industry, Meghna struggles her way to the top.

Fame, money and a great career in the Fashion world has its own set of negatives. And as the saying goes ‘What goes up, has to come down’. Soon Meghna’s career starts faltering which leads to alcohol and drug abuse. Friends turn into foes and unable to bear the price she has paid for success, the once super model is now psychologically deeply affected. How she makes a comeback forms the rest of the tale.

Fashion Film Review

Madhur Bhandarkar is a master story-teller and he proves it yet again with Fashion. With a bit of shock value attached to it, the director brilliantly presents most of the sad and unfortunate truths of the Fashion world. The only flaw her is, Madhur takes his own time which results in a movie of 2 hour 50 minutes runtime when it preferably should have finished in about 135 minutes. The drug and alcohol abuse in the second half is stretched too long.

Some of the scenes really stand out and Madhur has also conveniently borrowed some real life incidents into the movie.

  • The scene wherein Priyanka Chopra takes on Arbaaz Khan in front of his wife.
  • Priyanka wakes up only to realise she has just slept with a stranger.
  • Kangana Ranaut’s wardrobe malfunction scene, which is heavily inspired by the Carol Gracious incident a few years ago.
  • Kangana Ranaut on the streets of Mumbai scene, which again is taken from a real life incident, that of Geetanjali Nagpal, who was found begging on the streets of Delhi.
  • When Priyanka freezes on the ramp.
  • The romance in the first half too is beautifully executed.

Apart from the length the only other flaw is the climax. For a movie that was so convincing throughout, the writers have penned down a climax which is quite unrealistic. The music and cinematography is just perfect.

Madhur Bhandarkar is known for extracting great performance out of actors and he does it again. Priyanka Chopra has just delivered an award worthy knockout performance. What Kareena achieved with Jab We Met, Priyanka should with Fashion. Kangana Ranaut is honestly overdoing these psycho roles, after several back to back similar roles in the recent past, Kangana needs a change. Mugdha Godse has a great body and screen presence. Arjan Bajwa is good. Samir Soni and Harsh Chhaya are brilliant. Arbaaz Khan surprisingly is very effective.

Watch Fashion for Madhur Bhandarkar’s super direction, watch it for Priyanka Chopra’s best performance since Aitraaz, watch it also to know more about the shocking facts of the Fashion industry and watch it only in theatre and not on pirated CDs or DVDs.

So I go with 4 on 5 stars for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion and award it a Highly Recommended rating.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Other Notes – A great movie after a long long time. Best since Naseeruddin Shah’s A Wednesday. Looking forward we have 3 releases lined up for next week. Vinay Pathak’s Dasvidaniya, Rajshri’s Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi and Sanjay Dutt’s EMI all release on Friday the 7th of November. Do visit Indicine.com for the reviews and the latest news, videos and pictures.

Again, I request whoever is reading this; not to watch movies on pirated CDs or DVDs. Oh yeah, downloading movies from torrent sites, watching online on video sharing sites is illegal too. A hell of a lot of effort and money goes into the making of every film and the only way the makers of such great films recover the money back is if you watch the movie in theatre.

  • Thanks for the suggestions about credit repair on all of this web-site. A few things i would tell people would be to give up the actual mentality that they’ll buy at this point and pay back later. As being a society most of us tend to try this for many factors. This includes vacations, furniture, as well as items we would like. However, you should separate your current wants out of the needs. When you are working to raise your credit ranking score you have to make some trade-offs. For example it is possible to shop online to economize or you can check out second hand shops instead of pricey department stores for clothing.
