Fashion Movie Review

Madhur Bhandarkar movies are always something to look forward to. The acclaimed director of movies like Chandni Bar, Corporate, Page 3 is back with his take on the Fashion world. The actors have been carefully picked. Priyanka Chopra plays the main lead with Kangana Ranaut, Mugdha Godse, Arbaaz Khan, Samir Soni and Arjan Bajwa in supporting roles. Does the National Award winning director deliver, with such huge expectations riding on the film?

Fashion is about Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra), a girl from Chandigarh with huge dreams of becoming a super model. Like hundreds who land up in Mumbai everyday to pursue their dreams, Meghna against the wish of her father goes to the city of dreams. With great looks, right attitude and the help of a few friends from the Fashion industry, Meghna struggles her way to the top.

Fame, money and a great career in the Fashion world has its own set of negatives. And as the saying goes ‘What goes up, has to come down’. Soon Meghna’s career starts faltering which leads to alcohol and drug abuse. Friends turn into foes and unable to bear the price she has paid for success, the once super model is now psychologically deeply affected. How she makes a comeback forms the rest of the tale.

Fashion Film Review

Madhur Bhandarkar is a master story-teller and he proves it yet again with Fashion. With a bit of shock value attached to it, the director brilliantly presents most of the sad and unfortunate truths of the Fashion world. The only flaw her is, Madhur takes his own time which results in a movie of 2 hour 50 minutes runtime when it preferably should have finished in about 135 minutes. The drug and alcohol abuse in the second half is stretched too long.

Some of the scenes really stand out and Madhur has also conveniently borrowed some real life incidents into the movie.

  • The scene wherein Priyanka Chopra takes on Arbaaz Khan in front of his wife.
  • Priyanka wakes up only to realise she has just slept with a stranger.
  • Kangana Ranauts wardrobe malfunction scene, which is heavily inspired by the Carol Gracious incident a few years ago.
  • Kangana Ranaut on the streets of Mumbai scene, which again is taken from a real life incident, that of Geetanjali Nagpal, who was found begging on the streets of Delhi.
  • When Priyanka freezes on the ramp.
  • The romance in the first half too is beautifully executed.

Apart from the length the only other flaw is the climax. For a movie that was so convincing throughout, the writers have penned down a climax which is quite unrealistic. The music and cinematography is just perfect.

Madhur Bhandarkar is known for extracting great performance out of actors and he does it again. Priyanka Chopra has just delivered an award worthy knockout performance. What Kareena achieved with Jab We Met, Priyanka should with Fashion. Kangana Ranaut is honestly overdoing these psycho roles, after several back to back similar roles in the recent past, Kangana needs a change. Mugdha Godse has a great body and screen presence. Arjan Bajwa is good. Samir Soni and Harsh Chhaya are brilliant. Arbaaz Khan surprisingly is very effective.

Watch Fashion for Madhur Bhandarkar’s super direction, watch it for Priyanka Chopra’s best performance since Aitraaz, watch it also to know more about the shocking facts of the Fashion industry and watch it only in theatre and not on pirated CDs or DVDs.

So I go with 4 on 5 stars for Madhur Bhandarkars Fashion and award it a Highly Recommended rating.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Other Notes – A great movie after a long long time. Best since Naseeruddin Shah’s A Wednesday. Looking forward we have 3 releases lined up for next week. Vinay Pathak’s Dasvidaniya, Rajshri’s Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi and Sanjay Dutt’s EMI all release on Friday the 7th of November. Do visit for the reviews and the latest news, videos and pictures.

Again, I request whoever is reading this; not to watch movies on pirated CDs or DVDs. Oh yeah, downloading movies from torrent sites, watching online on video sharing sites is illegal too. A hell of a lot of effort and money goes into the making of every film and the only way the makers of such great films recover the money back is if you watch the movie in theatre.

  • watching alone in dvd is far better than with the large crowdy sound in theatre.
I hope something is special to watch in Fashion

  • I don’t even need to read the review because I’m sure that this movie is a good one, and might be the best for Priyanka as a talented actress. I’m so eager to watch it, and I will in cinema ofcourse, not online but it’s not released yet in our cinemas.

    Rabne Banade Jodi

These 4 movies for sure, and with no doubt, will be good movies.

  • 4 stars…?? ;) so the prediction was right BR… :P Nice review! :) fashion is really good…
    highly recommended…

  • I didn’t do as I said.. couldn’t wait till the cinema show this movie so I watched it online, and as I expected Indicine Team, such a wonderful movie. I was sure that this movie is good because the director is good. U have mentioned the movies he did in your review but u missed out (Satta) which I consider his best, a powerful movie and the best for Raveena Tandun.

All the actors perfromed well, Priyanka, Kangana Ranut.. this young actress who’s maybe 20 years old is so talented, she did her best in “Gangster” she got a different look and a different personality than other bollywood actresses, she got a depth in her character as well as deep & sad eyes, a unique voice, when she talks she’s just like going to cry.. that’s her voice and the director gave her a very suitable role which goes with her character. Also the actor who played (gay), the bald actor who helped Priyanka, was funny and performed well ( is he really a gay or he just performed at his best in this role?)

I’m going to watch it again in cinema as this movie is worth watching on a big screen and more than one time.

  • I hope the movie is just the best till date on fashion world, with award winning performance from Kangana and of-course Priyanka and Arbaaz are also good. The music stands out.Marjaava and Aashiyaana are a treat to listen.3 of 5 is my rating.

  • Hey,Every one please watch this movie once in a theatre and u will feel satisfied by this 2h 50m film touched by the performance of Kangana, real performance till date with great maturity at a very tender age.HATS OFF.

  • A lot of hell efforts are put into the making of a film, especially movies of this kind involving great sense and star cast.At least look at the director’s bold move and efforts to bring the fashion world’s black and white colours to the common man, understand him and pay him off by watching the movie only on a BIG SCREEN.

  • Good Movie , Which tells u abt d fashion industry n the model’s life . A Must Watch Movie in theater . Acting Wise Kangna is superb in every looks and xpresions . Priyanka asusually good . Fashion ka jalwa and Mar Jaava is d 2 Best songs . Afta interval u may feel bored 4 half n hour dats d Only Negative point in d movie . My Rating 3.5/5 .

  • Gr8 movie.. Esp. the scene when priyanka faces arbaaz in the elevator and the voice over explains how one has to face the ups and downs of life..

  • Dipti: Yes.. that’s the best touching scene and it happens for lots of girls in this life.. today someone love & worship you, but tomorrow he just ignores u when he meets you.. happened to thousand of girls, and also the scene when she takes drugs, and the next day, she find herself in a bed with the black man and then she feels “disgusted” and in a hystrical way, she tries to remove her makeup and cries! that scene was also painful.

  • there is nothing that we do not know of the fashion world already that was shown in those terms it is a bore..we all know about drugs illicit relationships…so for me it wasnt anything as pathbreaking as it was made out .interst should fall soon and the movie will flop or has it already

  • Mr.Pradip – Ur Absolutely Right . Nothing Special in Dis Movie . V Can Get to Knw abt Everything by Media Nowadayz. { My Opinion Abt Dis Movie is an Emotional Drama with old message Which is going on in daily life n ll b going on . My Rating is 2/5 . Songs r also nt catchy just ok n performance’s also ok . Boring Movie wit Slow pace }

  • The hype surrounding the film precedes it. I dont get it. The acting was over done in some scenes and under done in others. There was no equilibrium. I think the execution very poor! The scene at Rahul Arora’s wedding where Shohali was to make a toast, I thought that something momumental was about to happen! like she was going to say something real nasty about the slimy head of the agency! And it had to take sleeping with a black guy for Meghna to break down? I mean is that the absolute worst thing that can happen or what? Do I smell racism in this film? Tell me! And that final show stopper scene where Mehgna learn of the death of Shohali, what was that. I say total unprofessionalism! She could not go on the ramp, then everybody kept urging then she went———- too much drama. And Rohit Rohit tried too hard to be gay. Hmmmmmmmm——No stars for this film. It is a total black hole!

  • Wow… after watching this, it’s so obvious that the Indian film industry is racist. Why did the guy that Meghna slept with have to be black? What difference would it have made if it was an Indian guy? Like would she have been less horrified? THANK GOD I don’t live in India ‘cus the wide-spread racism there disgusts me.

  • The movie is amazing kangana is d best. But 2 me when megna found out that she just slept with black man and realizes her inner dark, so the director is clearly showing hatred toward black people. That is the worst part of the movie. Pls actors there is no place for racism in your career nd trying 2 make one the damage will be yours bcos u will flop.
