Competitive International Documentary Film Fest – Goa

One of the best holidaying spot to host competitive international film festival.

Goa will host a competitive international film festival for documentary, short and animation films next year besides the South Asian Film Festival later as part of its efforts to promote art and culture.

Disclosing this to mediapersons on the eve of a five-day non-competitive Goa International Film Festival for documentary, short and animation films, Kala Academy vice-chairman Jitendra Deshprabhu and Chief Producer Kuldeep Sinha of the Films Division, Government of India, said the festival will showcase 75 films over 32 hours duration from 26 countries from tomorrow.

They include 19 award-winning films of Mumbai International Film Festival(MIFF), nine award winning animation films, and 22 Best of Films Division films including a few on Goa. A package of 25 films made by Goans in Goa in Konkani, Marathi and other languages would also be screened.

Oscar nominee – The Little Terrorist – directed by Ashvin Kumar of India followed by Bulgarian film ?Whose is this Song?? by Adela Peeva, will be screened immediately after the festival is inaugurated by chief secretary J P Singh.

Film actress Isha Kopikar and film personality Pankaj Parashar will be present at the inaugural function where noted film editor V Naik and Prof Les Menezes will be honoured.

The film ?A Seaside Story? directed by Laxman Shetgaonkar of Goa winning Golden Conch and winner of Rs 1.5 lakh award as the ?Best Fiction Film? at MIFF-2004 is also included in the screening schedule.

Mr Sinha maintained that the production of documentary films had been ??static? at 300, if not declining every year with the Films Division alone produciong 70 of them.

The Centre, he said, was planning to have a dialogue soon with the exhibitors and distributors to urge the theatres to screen the documentaries which was mandatory.

But most of the theatres, leave alone multi-plexes, were reluctant to screen the documentaries for commercial reasons and hence the authorities are trying to persuade the state governments to ask theatres to do so, Mr Sinha added.
