Chennai Express 200 Crore: SRK makes history!

In just 2 weeks since its release in India, Chennai Express has become only the second film to cross the 200 crore mark. The film has been on a record-breaking spree ever since it released during the Eid weekend, and even though the SRK starrer still needs a few lakhs to cross the lifetime business of 3 Idiots, its only a matter of time now. We haven’t received the official figures yet, but the Thursday business is likely to be around 3 – 3.5 crore net.

Here’s a look at some of the records that the film has broken on its ‘super-express’ journey at the box office.

Chennai Express 200 Crore

Chennai Express 200 Crore

1. Paid Previews: The 3 Idiots record of 2.75 crore, set more than 3 years ago, was broken. Chennai Express collected Rs 6.75 crore on Thursday (8th August).

2. First Day: Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger collected Rs 32.92 crore last year, a record that many believed only Krrish 3 or Dhoom 3 could break. Chennai Express though, managed to beat ETT by 20 lakhs (0.2 cr) as the film collected Rs 33.12 on its opening day at the box office.

3. Highest Single Day Collections: Another one of the records previously held by Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger was overtaken. Eid releases have always managed to smash most records, and this year was no different. However, this time around, it was Shah Rukh Khan who reigned supreme at the box office.

4. Second Day: Ra One in 2011 collected 25 crore net (including all versions) in what was back then a record-breaking 25 crore net (including all versions). Chennai Express collected 28.06 crore, which is not only the highest collections on the second day of release, but also the biggest Saturday AND the third highest single day business ever! HUGE!

5. Weekend: Chennai Express crossed the 100 crore mark in its first weekend itself (including paid previews), a record that is likely to stay for long unless a major release gets two or more holidays in its first weekend

6. Fastest to 100 Crore: Ek Tha Tiger crossed the 100 crore mark in 5 days, Chennai Express did it in almost double quick time. The Shahrukh Khan film took just 3 days + paid previews.

7. First Week: This record too was blown away quite easily. Ek Tha Tiger collected 137.15 crore in 7 days, Chennai Express did 20 crores more – 156.71 crore. The film crossed the lifetime business of every film except Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, ETT and 3 Idiots in its first week itself! And this includes humongous blockbusters like Dabangg 2, Rowdy Rathore and Bodyguard!

8. Fastest to 150 crore: Chennai Express beat the 9 day record of ETT in 7 days.

9. Fastest to 200 crore: In 2 weeks, CE also became only the second film to collect 200 crores or more.

10. Highest grosser ever: Chennai Express will be the highest grosser in the history of Indian Cinema tomorrow (most likely)!

Here are a few other records that the film holds. Clearly, Chennai Express will be the film to beat for all major releases henceforth.

  • Third film to gross 300 crores or more worldwide after Ek Tha Tiger and 3 Idiots.
  • Second film to gross 350 crores or more.
  • Third film to cross the 100 crore mark overseas – 3 Idiots and My Name Is Khan being the other two.
  • Highest first weekend / first week collections in almost every country overseas.

Too many to list, really. Congratulations to the entire team of Chennai Express, more so to Shahrukh Khan – because at the end of the day, for a masala entertainer like Chennai Express to generate the business that it has and collect more than 100 crores in the overseas markets alone, is simply unheard of!

  • @aks dumbo..
Rab ne bana di jodi defeated d previous highest grosser dhoom 2… But it wazz overshadowed by ghjini’s success
It holded d record for two weeks..
    So plzzz check ur facts..
Shahrukh took less years dan aamir n salman just got little lucky…

  • Just for the record, 3 idiots is still the highest grossing movie of all time. And will continue to stay the highest grossing movie of all time for a while.

You know money is money, whether its grossed in India or outside of India.

385 crore gross will not be beaten by CE. It will not even come close.

  • Chennai Express now holds a record of being the ‘Highest Grosser Of All Time’ at the Domestic Box Office.

  • For those idiots fans of Aamir who said SRK breaks the 3Idiots record after 4 years. My question for them is where was Aamir himself during these bl o o dy 4 years? He got 2 releases but failed to cross even 100cr. So that shows the truth behind the mega success of 3 Idiots. No need to explain more.

For those Mental fans of Salman who said SRK breaks the 3Idiots record after 4 years. My question for them is where was Salman’s power during these bl o o dy 4 years? He got 5 releases (Dabang, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabang-2) but failed to cross 200cr even he got the edge of holiday releases & open weeks. No need to explain more.

And finally mark my words: K-3 & D-3 will not break the Highest Grosser of All Time at Domestic & Worldwide collection as both r belong to different gener not masala which is acceptable widely now a days. But yes i admit that PK can change game as its a Raju Hirani’s movie. Aamir, Sunjay Dutt (Munna Bhai Combo), Sushant Singh Rajput (New Heart throbe) & Anushka are there.

  • It is never a wise decision to release your film alongside an SRK flick. Don’t believe us? Ask Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sajid Nadiadwala!

History shows that when it comes to a box office clash, SRK will go all-out to make sure his film delivers and is the first choice of cinegoers all over the world. Fans too have always responded in huge numbers by supporting SRK’s releases in a clash. And a clash seems to bring out the best in SRK’s creativity as well.

Here’s a look at some past examples when rival releases had to bow down to the King!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai/Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) – Even though Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda’s combo under the direction of David Dhawan was the front runner among trade gurus, Karan Johar’s debut film eventually had the last laugh. The risk of casting lover-boy SRK as the father of an eight-year-old worked, and team KKHH laughed away to the bank by making fans smile and cry in equal measure.

Mohabbatein/Mission Kashmir (2000) – This film came at a time when SRK’s stardom was being seriously challenged by Hrithik Roshan. However a disappointing screenplay and an underwritten part for Roshan lost out to the magic of Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan, with ample support from a terrific comeback by Big B and a surprise cameo by Aishwarya Rai. Ironically Mission Kashmir was first planned with the Mohabbatein duo!

Don/Jaan E Mann (2006) – Despite the lavish canvas and good music, fans chose SRK’s modern day take on Amitabh Bachchan’s Don and gave him yet another Diwali blockbuster.

Om Shanti Om/ (2007) – This was a clash that made history. Even though Sanjay Leela Bhansali had the backing of a Hollywood studio, his Devdas actor redefined the rules of movie marketing with his promotional blitzkrieg for Om Shanti Om. And as expected, OSO knocked Saawariya out of the race even before the first day ended.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan/Son Of Sardaar (2012) – This battle turned rather ugly, with Ajay Dvegn’s banner clashing with YRF over charges of foul play and monopolistic practices. And while fans turned up in big numbers for both film, Yash Chopra’s last venture sustained much longer than SOS.

With Chennai Express breaking records everyday, it would be interesting to see if any producer would clash with SRK’s next release Happy New Year.

  • Hay SRKians here is a good new for all of us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR will be release at Diwali-2014

So 2014 Diwali will be more exciting and more bigger and grander.

Wish u good luck SRK-Farah-Dip-Red Chillies.

Congratulations Sir SRK u r real n biggest HERO of All Time

  • @hrithik u r just a shit. I was there at that time too u idiot. U can find there my comments with the name of @Sahir. U poor dodo.

    I m proud of RA.One, Don-2, JTHJ.

U r not actually a Hindustani or Bollywood Lover. U r must be a servent of Salman or Hrithik who paid u for all these bad-mouthing and senseless comments. If that is not a case then u must appreciate the good work always. RA.One is one movie which make India & Bollywood proud as for as VFX & Technology is concern. It gives a hope and courage to other bollywood production houses to do experiments and take Bollywood to next level. I accept RA.One had a week story but final product and out look was a proud product.

Though i m SRK fan but i always appreciate good work. Koi Mil Gaya, Krish and now Krish-3 they r great in all respects. I like Rang De Basanti, Lagan & 3-Idiots they r classics. I like Khamoshi (though that was flop), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Jan-e-Mann (though that was Flop too).

But here i m talking about Super Star Power. I accept Salman generated huge star power after Wanted that is why weak movies like Bodyguard, Ready & Dabang-2 done huge business. Dabang & ETT were better.

But the thing is which u dont want to accept is SRK Super Star Power. SRK deleviers 100cr+ movies during his low phase with weak contents. That is realy just because of his Craze & Crisma which cant be change even hater dont accept. Truth will remain truth. Aamir was unable to take Dhobi Ghat & Talaash to 100cr as reviews were gr8.

I will accpet SRK a weak star if his movie will appreciate by critics got 4+ stars but still struggle to reach 100cr club.

In Akkis case u cant deny that fact. OMG & SC-26 are big examples.

Today Masala Gener is working but accept this thing too that Masala Gener too must have some logic & attraction behind. Otherwise if its only a masala movie with senseless plot and dialouges u cant attract audiance. Big examples are Khildai-786 & Himmatwala.

So accept the fact that Chennai Express is way better then previous Masala Flicks that is way Audiance go crazy.

  • the Real KING ??? Breaking a record is different than Making A History !

SRK Broke the Records of 3 Idiots but never made A History !

TRUE FACTS: History was made by Real KINGS (Salman and Aamir)

Salman Khan —> Hum Aapke Hain Kaun —> 1994 —> 69.75 Crores (Record was on top until 2001- 8 Years – when Gadar collected 75 Crores) this is called the History Maker !!!

In the meanwhile from 1988-2007, SRK’s top seller movie was Chak De India —> 67,26 Crores !!!

Aamir Khan —> Ghagini —> 2008 —> 114 Crores (the First Movie to cross 100 Crores)
    —> 3 Idiots —> 2009 —> 202.5 Crores (the First movie to Cross 200 Crores)

SO, what SRK did? He just broke a record which was held for 4 years and We all Know that it will be broken by some up-coming movies like; Dhoom 3, Krish 3 , Mental, Kick ….

Come on know the Difference between record breaking and History Making !!!!

  • SRK FANS KEEP THE MOVIE IN PUBLICITY AND WATCH ONE MORE TIME……DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF SRK FANS…..

  • why cant people just accept the truth that SRK CE surpass the lifetime collection of 3I…records can be made to be broken and thats what happen to 3I…up to now they are still comparing CE and 3I which is not right..so those who still dont believe that SRK CE has a lifetime collections way more more than 3I just chill ok..ha ha ha ha ha ha…
