Can Baby cross the 100 crore mark?

Q. Can Akshay Kumar’s Baby cross the 100 crore mark at the box office? – Aneesh

A. Baby has collected Rs 87.27 crore in 16 days at the box office, so the film needs to collect Rs 12.73 crore to become one of the more deserving films in the ‘100 crore club‘.

The drop from first week to second was 67%, if the drop is similar this week then the film would collect 7 crore in Week 3. That would take the 3 week total to Rs 91-92 crore. After which the film should add around 3-4 crore to take its lifetime total to Rs 95-96 crore. A big film ‘Roy’ also releases in theatres this coming weekend and the number of shows of Baby, which is already low, should reduce considerably. In short, 100 crore looks highly unlikely at this stage.

Q. Why Akshay doesn’t release his films on more screens like Hrithik and Khans. They release their films on almost 4500 screen but Akshay current film is getting only 3000 screens? A. A journalist once tweeted “If you apply MATH to Haider, it opened at 6.14 crore in 1200 screens. That means it could’ve opened to 24 cr in 4,500 screens like Bang Bang”. Quite clearly, he has absolutely no understanding of the trade. With the recent social media obsession with screen count, what most people don’t understand is, if there is an audience for a film on 4000 screens, the producers (or distributors) would be fools not to release their films on every screen in India. A film like Baby, if released at a single-screen theatre in a small town in UP or Bihar for example, would generate no business whatsoever because the audience in that area is not interested in sleek song-less thrillers. The release cost would be more than the business the film generates. Even if Salman or Hrithik do a film like Baby it would NOT get a 4000 screen release, unless they make it more commercial with action and songs for the masses.

Q. Why doesn’t Rohit Shetty cast Salman Khan in his films? – Moinul Hoque

A. The best person to answer this would be Rohit Shetty himself. The director has expressed his desire to work with Salman in several interviews, but the problem is, Salman has already committed himself to quite a few films. Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Shuddhhi, Sultan, No Entry sequel – Salman’s schedule is packed till late 2016.
