Boss HIT or FLOP: Box Office Prediction

Akshay Kumar’s third and final release of 2013, BOSS, is finally set to hit theatres tomorrow. Its been a mixed year for the superstar, as his first film Special 26 did well at the box office, but his most-awaited film in recent times Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara was rejected by the audience.

Much like Besharam a couple of week ago, Boss releases on Wednesday giving it a extended 5 day weekend. Apart from the weekly holiday on Sunday, Boss hits theatres on a national holiday for Id-ul-Zuha. The film is also likely to benefit from two restricted holidays for Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti (Friday, 18th October) and Karva Chouth (Tuesday, 22nd October).

Extended weekends can be extremely dangerous if the initial response to a film is negative. With the reach of social media now extending to even the smaller towns of India, word spreads quicker than ever before. Negative word-of-mouth can have a massive impact on multiplex business, where more than 75% of business is generated even for massy action films like Boss.

So for Boss to take advantage of all the holidays it has in its first week, its imperative that the film is liked. Otherwise, things can go wrong pretty quickly.

Coming to the positive side of things, the makers of the film along with Akshay Kumar have promoted the film well. Music has topped charts and the overall response to the trailer and song promos has been quite positive all along.

Made on a budget of Rs 50 crore (cost of production), Boss releases on 3600 screens worldwide, out of which it gets around 3200 screens in India. Its a wide enough release for a film to collect 25 crore+ on a national holiday.

Realistically though, we expect Boss to collect around 16-18 crore on its opening day and then depending on how the film is received, it could either go from strength-to-strength taking full advantage of the holiday or go down-hill Thursday onwards. However, Boss is unlikely to crash like Besharam did even if the response is outright negative, as single-screens tend to sustain better in the first few days.

Below is our box office prediction of Boss.

IF VERY GOOD (positive word-of-mouth)

  • First day – 18 crore
  • Weekend (3 day) – 37 crores
  • Extended Weekend (5 day) – 66 crore
  • Week 1 (9 day) –  85 crores
  • Final – 140 crores+ (Blockbuster)

IF AVERAGE (mixed response)

  • First Day – 17 crore
  • Weekend (3 day) – 33 crores
  • Extended Weekend (5 day) – 54 crore
  • Week 1 (9 day) –  70 crores
  • Final – 100 crore+ (Hit)

IF BAD (worst case scenario)

  • First Day – 16 crore
  • Weekend (3 day) – 27 crores
  • Extended Weekend (5 day) – 40 crore
  • Week 1 (9 day) – 50 crores
  • Lifetime Collections – 55 crores (Average)

Overall, Boss should go on to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser of 2013 and finally break the ’60 crore’ jinx; his last 3 releases (Khiladi 786, Special 26 and OUATIMD) have all collected between 60-70 crore. The costs are lower compared to most big release, so the film is a ‘success’ if it makes to collect around 55 crore.

If it finds appreciation like Rowdy Rathore did, then Boss could well be Akshay’s biggest career grosser. The success or failure of the film will make a huge difference for his next release ‘Thuppakki remake’ which is directed by A.R Murugadoss, as there are reports that the film has shaped up really well.

  • Fact is Akki and SRK has confidential agreement. Akki signed two movies one with Karen Johar and second with Rohit Shetty to backout with doing promotion of Once upon a time in mumbai. Akki has strong star power, Once upon a time is good movie as well as verdict is verygood. Only releasing on 1600 screen movie collected 60 crs life time + rights already sold prior to movie released which collected so far 110 cr. movie is not flop. Movie collected invested money at same margin what it spend. Akki helped SRK to make Chennai Express top grosser. This is all Bollywood bad business. Akki makes Blockbuster, Superhit, Hit, Average or Flop he is still highest tax payer in bollywood since last three years. Just Think how that possible without inflow money.

  • Such is Akkis starpower

  • @raj ouatimd is flop every website says that k..most of them did not liked that movie too..from friday it got 2500 screens thn it got again reduces due to bad performences at box office

  • @khan kapoor:i haven’t arranged them in any order or ranking.just wrote the name.and agreed,go goa gone and yjhd should have been in that list.

  • The advance bookings of Boss is 25% as per reports yesterday evening.

However, even Rowdy Rathore had the same percentage of booking, which went on to collect more than 100 cr.

So, if the movie is liked it will surely be in the range of 80-100 cr, or if superliked then 150 cr +

    Good luck akkians.

  • Indicine predicted100 crore in worst case scenario for Besharam but only 55 crore for boss. Is it that they have kept it this low coz of besharam or is akshay not as big as ranbir.

  • after chennai express’s success, all srk fans have got mad, they have lost their mental stability and all they think is srk is unbeatable, ce record can’t be broken, all bullshit , srk fans i warn you all, return back to your normal state or else muh ki khaani padegi !!! boss may not cross ce collection as its releasing in 3200 screens but still there is a very good chance for it, but krrish 3 and dhoom 3 are surely going to shatter the records of ce, srk fans just go to hell, you are praying bad for each actor’s movie but remember before ce, your srk was even finding it difficult to cross 100 cr.

    THE BOSS IS ALWAYS RIGHT !!!!!!! AKSHAY>>>>>>>>fake R K(srk)

  • I don’t know how much collection it will do,but as it’s a remake of hit tamil movie and songs are good,100cr is possible.

  • @r20,predict krna badi asam hai, lekin jab real aa jata hai tavi dkha jata woh hota nehi,2m sus rahe hu k3 or d3 ce ka record todega, mai kehna chahta hu may be or may nt,rk fan v besharam release hune se pehle kahta tha,boi kaha tha hala ki sallu ne v hope kiya tha ki besharam ce ka record todega kyo ki besharam ce se jyada screen mai release hua tha bt real mai dkhu besharam 70 cr v par nehi kiya.all that glitter is nt gold, yad rakhna, kam ayega.

  • i think boss will just cross 100 crores but it will no be blockbluster….
    following r my prediction
    boss-110
    k 3-210
    dhoom 3-250
    jai ho-280
    kick- 300

  • wat a bullshit movie . just saw the movie .waste of money .though i like akshay kumar but i still recommend don’t watch movie .

  • @r20, ok you mean boss cant beat ce bcoz it has less screens.. But it has more screens than yjhd. Then as per you it must beat yjhd atleast. And if doesn’t then it is underperformer. And for you information srk was never struggling to cross 100 crs but your akki was definately struggling to cross 70 crs and is still struggling to cross 70 crs itself. And coming to krish3 and d3 then i wish they break ce records. And if krish3 manages to do that i will be more than happy. But first you take care about your akki. If this time also he can’t deliver atleast a 15 crs opening day with 3200 screens and eid holiday then shame on him bcoz this time no excuses of screens or non holiday. So good luck.

  • Jai Ho releasing on 25th December 2013, so the biggest grosser of this year also will be a SALMAN KHAN film. Like 2010, 2011, 2012. 4 in a raw for Dabangg Khan!

  • Haha, if you read AkkiBoss’ reply, you will see what he has written. LOL

Which is true. I remember Shahrukh smelling all perfume and other ghey stuff during the shooting of Baazigar. Thats why I never worked with him again.

  • @jai ho 25th december,jai ho won’t release this year.even if it will release,we dnt have tension yaar.max 140 cr.mark my word,nd d3 160 max.
