Bombay High Court on Monday cleared Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab with one cut and dismisses Censor Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) plea. The court directed CBFC to issue a fresh certificate to the movie within 48 hours.
The court observed that Punjab is a land of green revolution and brave soldiers. One sentence - Zameen banjar te aulaad kanjar - can’t affect that image.
The only scene that will be deleted in the film is the one with Tommy Singh urinating into the crowd.
“On cut no 9 (Tommy Singh urinating in front of crowd), we don’t feel that this scene is necessary in the film”
“We have read script in entirety to see if film encourages drugs. We do not find the film questions sovereignty or integrity of India by the names of cities, reference to state or by a signpost” the court said.
However, the judge also asked the makers to avoid incorporating abusive words in every dialogue in the film, adding that cuss words wouldn’t be allowed in every film.
“There is no need to assert or incorporate abusive words in every dialogue. As far as cut No 5 suggested by CBFC is concerned, there are some abusive words, some abusive words need to be deleted. We are not in agreement that in some films cuss words have been allowed so these should be allowed here too”
There is still some uncertainty over the release of ‘Udta Punjab’ this weekend.
The director of the film said they are looking to release the film as per schedule.
“Massively relieved today, looking to release the film on the scheduled date” Chaubey said.

Good Move. I guess the next best thing would be to remove the Censor Board. It gets too much involved, and I also heard there is lot of underhand exchange of $$$ to get ceritificates and pass movies without much cuts.
