Bollywood Sequels in 2013: Year of sequels!

‘Race 2’ has flagged off the sequel campaign. With the film marching towards the 100 crore mark, its success has proved once again that if the content is anything above average, a sequel would score well with the audience. No wonder, with six major sequels to arrive before end of year, Bollywood can well expect to rejoice with quite a few money spinners to add on to the fortunes.

[Note: ‘Murder 3’, ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Ragini MMS 2’ haven’t been included since these are franchise films and don’t have anything common w.r.t. story, cast or director]

Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns [1st March 2013]

The sequel takes on from where the original left and while the tussle between Sahib (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Biwi (Mahie Gill) remains, it’s the entry of Irrfan Khan that adds on to the spice. Considering the fact that last year Tigmanshu Dhulia and the actor had created magic in ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, expect the lifetime collections of ‘Sahib Biwi aur Gangster’ (10 crores) to be surpassed by the sequel within it’s opening weekend itself.

Shootout at Wadala [May 3rd 2013]

One of the rare prequels to come out of Bollywood, ‘Shootout at Wadala’ arrives in the wake of ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ which was a commercial success. Though latter was directed by Approva Lakhia, it had Sanjay Gupta supervising the entire film. This time around, Gupta is making a huge comeback with the film and if the First Look is any indication, he has smashed it in a big way.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 [7th June 2013]

On its release two years back, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ had turned out to be a surprise success of the year. On the flip side, none of the three Deols has enjoyed a commercial success in the couple of years gone by which means added push would be required to bring audience into theatres. However, the trio is clearly enjoying each other’s company whenever they are together and the sequel too is now expected to be a mad affair

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again [8th August 2013]

This one is all set to be a major biggie on its arrival. The film has everything going in it’s favour currently. Akshay Kumar is at the peak of his career, Milan Luthria continues to prove his mettle as the director, Ekta Kapoor knows how to get her PR and Marketing machinery on full throttle while the release timing (Eid) is just perfect. Expect a sure shot 100 crore super success here.

Krrish 3 [Diwali 2013]

Hrithik Roshan, yet again, has taken a gamble of staying away from releasing any film for long and has invested all his time and energy into ‘Krrish 3’. While it is pretty much on the cards that the lifetime collections (120 crores) of his biggest grosser till date (Agneepath) could well be crossed in the opening week itself once it arrives on Diwali, it has to be seen that what kind of distance that the film eventually covers as one expects big numbers to be thrown with this one.

Dhoom 3 [Christmas 2013]

Now this is one movie which spells hot at the title stage itself. With Aamir Khan coming together with Katrina Kaif in this Aditya Chopra production, the film is all set to be massive. Product of a much liked franchise, it could well be telling a different story altogether though Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra still tie things together from the commonality factor perspective.
