Bollywood Diwali Releases from 2006 to 2016!

Article by Vignesh (tweets @viggu_8391)

Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India, it’s also the season when the working class get their ‘yearly bonus’ and the footfalls at cinema falls also tend to show a significant increase. Not too long ago, it was the biggest festival of the year, reserved for the biggest of films. That tag now belongs to Christmas, followed by Eid, but Diwali still sees big-budget films featuring the biggest stars in the industry.

In 2006, there were 2 big releases during Diwali. Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Jaan-e-mann’ released alongside Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Don – The Chase Begins’, a remake of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer. The former started off well, but the box office supremacy of SRK and his charismatic portrayal as the ‘Don’ won the clash with Don collecting 2 times more than ‘Jaan-e-Mann’.

2007 was one of the best years for the industry. Akshay Kumar was at the top of his game, with all his 4 films emerging victorious. The Diwali period saw Shah Rukh’s Om Shanti Om which marked the acting debut of Deepika Padukone, taking on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’, which introduced us to Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Needless to say, Shah Rukh’s star power was enough to decimate ‘Saawariya’. ‘Om Shanti Om’ broke all box office records and emerged as the top grosser of the year.

2008 again had two films clashing during the Diwali Day and for the first time in a very long time, both films did well at the box office. Acclaimed Director Madhur Bhandarkar released his film ‘Fashion’ starring Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut. The film won huge appreciation and won National Awards. Golmaal Returns is the least successful Golmaal film, but it did well enough to earn ‘hit’ status at the box office.

2009 saw as many as 3 films releasing on the same day. All The Best, Blue and Main Aur Mrs Khanna clashed during this period. Blue, riding on Akshay’s star power, started off really well, scoring one of the biggest weekends, but crashed due to poor word-of-mouth. All The Best, which was gaining momentum eventually won the race due to lower costs. Main Aur Mrs Khanna was massive disaster.

2010 witnessed yet another big clash. Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn locked horns at the box office. The clash was between 2 comedy films, one directed by Rohit Shetty, whose popularity was increasing and the other directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Golmaal 3 scored over its opposition right from the first day of its release and went on to become only the 4th film to cross the 100 crore mark.

In 2011, Shah Rukh Khan was back to his Diwali releases after a gap of 4 years. It was the hugely-hyped Ra One, one of the costliest films of all time. While Shah Rukh was applauded for bringing in technology and making Ra One a technically good film, the film was rejected by the audience after a record Diwali day.

The 2012 Diwali weekend was filled with controversies. This year saw Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ featuring his favourite Shah Rukh Khan, releasing on the same day as Ajay Devgn’s home production ‘Son Of Sardaar’. Ajay was criticised for announcing his film after the announcement of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and sticking to his date even after Yash Chopra passed away. The entire period leading up to the release was ugly, with Ajay slapping a case against Yash Raj Films. It’s difficult to pick a clear winner from the clash, but Son Of Sardaar exceeded expectations, while Jab Tak Hai Jaan fell well short.

In 2013, Krrish 3, the 3rd part of one of the biggest franchises of Bollywood released in theatres. The film marked Hrithik’s return to the silver screen as a superhero, a character only he has been successful at playing. The film broke some of the previous records and set new benchmarks for the films to come. However, the film was marred with controversies regarding the official collections. Trade accused the Roshan’s for inflating the collections. The film was a blockbuster nonetheless.

2014 saw Shah Rukh’s 5th Diwali release in 9 years. It also marked the reunion of his ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Main Hoon Naa’ director Farah Khan. The film had an ensemble cast with current heartthrob Deepika Padukone. It released on the biggest day for film business in the year and broke opening records.

2015 – After quite a long time we saw Salman Khan getting a Diwali release. The last time he had a Diwali release, his career was at an all-time low. But fast forward to 2015 and Salman was head-and-shoulders above everyone else in the industry. This Diwali was special because Salman was returning with Sooraj Barjatya after a gap of 16 years. It also brought back the’ Family Drama’ genre, which was missing from Bollywood. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo did well, but couldn’t match the success of his previous film ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

2016 – This year, we have what has been the ugliest clash of all time. Controversies, political angle, personal attacks.. the last coupe of months has seen it all. But nothing would matter on the Friday of release as Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil takes on Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay.

We hope both films this year are liked by the audience and both emerge victorious at the box office. A year like 2012 would truly be a ‘Happy Diwali’ for the industry.

  • My request to all KING KHAN FANS TO vote for JTHJ,then DON,then OSO,thennrest.

so taht mans KING KHAN raped all Stars in clashes in DEEWALI?????though in other festive too HE raped all, rofl.

EAST OR WEST MEGASTAR KING KHANN IS THE BEST.

  • Highly excited to watch shivaay this diwali, my top 3 favs of diwali
    -golmaal 3
    -happy new year
    -prem ratan dhan payo

  • Hi all…. watched shivay with lot of expectations. … but from start to end it disappoints… I haven’t watched ae dil hail mushkil… probably karan is a lucky guy to have shivay released with Adhm…
The film have just 3 -4 min of good action scenes and all that is shown in trailer. .. I cant understand the logic of what Ajay was thinking when producing the film….
Pls Ajay fans… dont get me wrong….
With extreme grief I am saying shivay is not a entertainer…. its 90% slow and a 60% boring film…. and I am really sad for ajay…anyhow lets wait for the review of indicine too….

  • The former started off well, but the box office supremacy of SRK and his charismatic portrayal as the ‘Don’ won the clash with Don collecting 2 times more than ‘Jaan-e-Mann’.

@biascine… lol I don’t know which type of knowledge do u have…. Jaaneman was opened better than Don but due to Bad WOM it crashed after 1st weekend and due to Action type of film and remake of 2nd best film of Amitabh it went on to collect more and here shamelessly writing this… this prove that u r highly bias toward srk….

  • Srk and the history of diwali clashes before 2006
    1993-ajays bedardi vs Baazigar
1995-ddlj vs yaarana(yaaran earned 7 crore, it was a flop thats hahk-ddlj differnce, plus hahk had 7cr more budget too. But as per bhaitards logic and rickshawala calculator 7 cr differnce which flop andaaz apna apna earned is double footfalls that too for a much expensive Madhuri movie. From producers point of view ddlj is more profitable than hahk considering budget and overseas. From distributors its hahk)
1998-kkhh (which indicine added in salmans film in 90s article) vs bmcm

    any more??

Oh yes veer zaara vs aitraaz
Plus andaaz apna apna lost opening with suhaag
Kyun ki lost with garam masala in 2005 diwali. Lol

Salmans Heroes was released in Diwali 2008(extended )
    I hope its published

Not to forget Salman + Aamir gave around 55 percent less opening than akki-ajay in suhaag. Well Aamir gave a face saving opening but Salman ruined it, just like he ruined hahk opening-9 lakhs…thanks to Sooraj barjatya story and Madhuris performance lallu cud do item dance in those 14 songs thats it

  • All the morons…before blabbering on lowest Deewali grosser (MAMK) look at the highest Deewali grosser (PRDP) too.

  • First of all a happy diwali Indicine. Admire ur hard work

  • Indicine and SRK fans still want to live in past and in an era when SRK was on top. It is high time they accept the reality and move on !!!!!!!!!!!!! All the best to both the parties.

  • I hop Indicine comes with similar article for Eid and Christmas it will actually reveal the queen’s power !!!!!!!!

  • the main difference is srk in his worst phase is only beaten by salman & aamir(not even by aamir if we consider opening day only) but salman in his worst phase was not only beaten by srk but also beaten by hritik, akki, aamir, ranbir & any tom dick harry.

  • indicine,i hope ur prediction come true.u guys have always been mistaken nd ignored some considarable factors too.
like #diwali releases 2006 to 2016,i was expected it tht you guys will conduct articles like this wth a #Decade count.but i acknowledges your effort too.
as of now,u guys missed the fact that AJ has nver failed in a clash during Diwali!
he has maintained 100% track record on ths period.i hope u would do justice regardlessly.

  • @False fact

just because srk is not on top does not mean that he is in worst phase you fool.. when salman was defeated by tom dick and harry ,he had 4/5 releases per year, and off course he was not big at that time as he is today.
if srk releases 4/5 movies per year then he will be also defeated by tom dick and harry.
today he is defeated by ranveer,he is defeated by Mowgli, he ran way from clash..he gives flops on partial holiday.
salman and aamir are way ahead of him.
    top3 star now

    salman/aamir
    aamir/salman
    Akki

  • Diwali period hasnt seen much good cinema….. Golmaal and all da best was fun….but i wld pick jaanemann …really lkd it…..Fashion stands out

    BIGGEST CLASH WINNER—-KING KHAN

    HIGHEST HITS—-KING KHAN

    BIGGEST OPENING—-KING KHAN’S HNY

ALL RECORDS ON DEEWALI HELD BY MEGASTAR KING KHAN.

    DEEWALI MEANS ONLY KING KHAN.

and lallutards are crying, because they have biggest raped movies like jaaneman and mamk, rofl.

  • honestly diwali is a best weekend i mean just look at the collection of this almost 90% crap films. only because of diwali most of this films earned good amount. if a universal appeal film with its entertaining value then this period will give better result than christmas. diwali mostly face clashes between two not so entertaining movie but they survives well. people are ready to spend on diwali but only good films need. Golmaal4 if made like golmaal1 then just watch it will be money spinner on bo. people on diwali like to see fun fare movie not so intense or serious movie.

  • sad to see that best weekend is wasted by releasing such type of movies. in diwali just 2-3 movies needed with best entertaining value or 2-3 aamir khan films so that perception about diwali being changed. big prod. houses took big star with make stupid movies and earn profits. on diwali audience will spend with open heart but the only thing is needed is best films. Audience ki diwali bigad dete h ye har baar esi movie laake with any superstar. diwali films should be strictly reserved for best entertaining movies.
