Rani Mukherji (Mardaani) : Rani kicked butt in Mardaani. Both figuratively and literally. Shivani Shivaji Roy was the epitome of woman power in Bollywood as the fearless cop not afraid to chase her target. Rani was scheming, smart and exhilarating as Shivani. Even with the short frame she possess, she made the action scenes credible and the moment Shivani finally catches Walt and beats the shit out of him, was one of our favourite film moments of the year.
Tabu (Haider): Tabu gave an acting masterclass in Haider playing the flawed mother of Haider, Ghazala. She brought out the ignorant evil qualities of the character with poised nonchalant perfection. We never quite like the character and we never quite hate the character as much as we should. That was primarily because of the way Tabu brought Ghazala to life and gave a new dimension to Gertrude. If anyone bettered Shahid’s performance in Haider, it was Tabu.
Alia Bhatt (Highway): Who would have thought before 2014 started that Alia Bhatt would prove everyone wrong and establish herself as a fantastic actor and not just a glamorous star. She played the diminutive modern girl Veera who hasn’t experienced the world outside of the confines of her house. Veera gets kidnapped and through that journey she discovers herself and more importantly, discovers life around her. Alia brought Veera to life and shined as an actress. Her performance made Highway one of the best films to have come out in 2014.
Deepika Padukone (Finding Fanny): Deepika continued her blistering stream of great performances with Finding Fanny. Her character Angie loses her husband on the day of her wedding, leaving her forever widowed. She is destined to lead an uneventful boring life but a road trip across Goa changes everything and Angie discovers her passions and her youthful self all over again. Deepika was coy, understated and subtle as Angie. She worked hard on the Konkani accent and made her character another one of her memorable film roles.
Madhuri Dixit (Gulaab Gang, Dedh Ishqiya): Madhuri made a comeback of sorts with these two films and exposed her talent to the world all over again. In Dedh Ishqiya, she played the cunning Begum Para who cons the men who came to con her. The twist in the climax made the most sense and Madhuri was brilliant in it. Her chemistry with Huma Qureshi was also fantastic. In Gulaab Gang she played the role of woman vigilanti Rajjo who goes head-to-head against a powerful politician like Sumitra Devi (Juhi Chawla). Madhuri was the embodiment of woman power in Gulaab Gang. Even though the film flopped, her performance was lauded all around.

Ranis performance was awesome- on dvd I saw it but her impact n stature was larger than life…
completley agree wid the list.mardaani was a superb film.rani and tahir gave awesome performances.it was a deserving bo success.
highway was decent but aalia was excellent in the film but just like rockstar imtiaz lost the plot midway as a result it couldn’t bcm as much a hit like mardaani and queen.
haider was also a superb film and tabu gave yet another outstanding performance in d film.
finding fanny was a gd film and queen deepika proved why everyone loves her through her magical performance in d film
haven’t seen dedh ishqiya as I found it extremely boring
btw y is kangana as queen ignored from d list???
I won’t vote bcz kangana was the best unconventional heroine of the year but she has been ignored.I think this list is fixed.

deeepika was just fine nothing great in finding fanny arjun was better while where’s priyanka n kangana names they were far awesome

A brilliant article indeed . Thumbs up from me . 2014 was a year i have to say was a brilliant remember year for actresses . The female performances of 2014 were far better than male performances and that is my honest opinion . I think most of the people will agree with me . I have voted for Rani and according to me her performance was the best female performance of 2014 . Mardaani is also one of the best films of 2014 .
1. Rani – A brilliant performance i think it is Rani’s best performance in her career . I have not seen Black . What a brilliant comeback ! She looked convincing as a fearless cop . Despite being a Adult movie it was successful at the Box Office which shows people like good movies .
2. Alia – After seeing SOTY, my brother and sister told me that this girl is good for nothing . I said to them she has only done one movie and that was not a performance oriented role . She just had look glamorous in the movie . But i did not expected such a fabulous performance from her . Only in her 2nd movie she has given an incredible performance .
3. Tabu – Tabu is a really fabulous actress . I have seen Virasat, Maachis, Chandni Bar ( I dont remember ) and Haider . She has given an impeccable performance in Haider . I really want her to win best supporting actress .
4. Deepika – She has improved as an actress . She has given brilliant performances in YJHD, CE and Ram Leela . Finding Fanny according to me was a average movie . The main reason for it was a disappointing ending . 2013 was the best year for her . After giving 4 back to back successful movies it needs guts to do a offbeat movie .
5. Madhuri – She is a great actress, dancer and a great person . Although in Dedh Ishqiya Naseer Sir and Arshad were absolutely brilliant . But Madhuri was good if not brilliant .
in my opinion, best performances are:
1: kangna in queen
2: tabu in haider
3: rani mukherji in mardaani

I feel the best order is
1. Tabu-Haider
2. Alia- Highway/ Rani-Mardaani
3. Madhuri- Dedh Ishqiyaa
4. Deepika- Finding Fanny.
But I have voted for Alia in Highway as my personal favs of 2014 are
1.Kangana in Queen
2.Alia in Highway
3.Madhuri in Dedh Ishqiyaa
4.Rani in Mardaani/Priyanka in Marykom
5.Parineeti in HTP
I haven’t seen Mardaani and queen,Finding fanny.I liked Tabu performance in Haider so it was best performance for me in 2014 among the movies I had scene.She in fact outshined Shaahid in the film.
But biggest surprise was Alia bhatt.She was fantastic in highway and equally brilliant in 2 states.Very good in HSKD too.If deepika was heroine of 2013 than 2014 belong too Alia or I even say that she had better run than deepika in 2013 as Alia wasn’t cast opposite to Any superstar like srk,ranbir or sequal like race 2.Thumbs up for Alia.
But best actress should go to Kangana or Rani as they both simply does perfect act as per the reviews I get from critics and user on social sites.
Undoubtly 2014 belong to actress as they did better than the male stars.
Forget to mention Priyanka for Mary Com she did her best for the film and we should appreciate her.
where’s Priyanka in that list everyone praised her after watching Mary Kom! she even carried the movie on her shoulders which made the movie earn 100crores worldwide
