Best Bollywood films in the First Half of 2015

Baby: Neeraj Pandey has mastered the art of making solid, Indianized issue based action thrillers which doesn’t molest our intelligence quotient and his partnership with Akshay Kumar proved fruitful once again after Special 26 with the spy thriller Baby that released on Republic Day this year. Baby was high on thrills, high on faux pax realism, high on action and high on patriotism. We would love to see the way Neeraj goes with Baby 2.

Badlapur: Very few people in India can make twisted, gory action thrillers the way Sriram Raghavan can. He gave us cult thrillers like Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar in the past and made a strong comeback after the Agent Vinod debacle with the fantastic Badlapur. He knows to titillate the audience with intrigue. Badlapur turned out to be so good because the main leads Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Sidduqui did commendable jobs of their accord with their roles. The scene where Raghu gets his revenge by killing Harman and Kanchan with a hammer gave us goosebumps and is one of our favorite scenes of the year so far!

Dum Laga Ke Haisha: Ayushmann Khurrana turned around his luck one month after the debacle called Hawaizaada with this delightful, charming and highly nostalgic piece of cinema called Dum Laga Ke Haisha. We could all identify with the characters written by Sharat Katariya and the dialogues were so realistic that it sometimes felt like we were watching a documentary. It helped that the acting was phenomenal by all the actors and Bhumi Pednekar made the debut of the year so far with this feminist from small town Rishikesh, Sandhya. Go woman empowerment!

Piku: The reason Piku has struck a chord with everyone is because we all know a father and daughter pair like Bhaskor and Piku. We know the quirks that fathers tend to develop with age and how dependent they get on their daughters. Piku worked because of the conversational nature of the film where the dialogues were as realistic as it can get in Hindi cinema! We fell in love with Deepika Padukone even more after Piku and our respect for mega actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan rose even further. And it gave us the mantra of 2015: Motion se hi Emotion hai!

Tanu Weds Manu Returns: This is the Blockbuster of 2015. The craze for the film can be felt by the fact that the film’s dialogues have crept into real life after its release. Tanu Weds Manu Returns has worked on such a big level because it retained a funny tone throughout the proceedings and even when things got dramatic we cried with a tinge of smile in our eyes and lips. It elevated Kangna Ranaut as the fearless actress of her generation and made her the proverbial darling of the masses. It has made a special place for itself in the box office history books and if you still haven’t watched it, make sure you watch it at the earliest.

Special Mention: Gabbar Is Back, Court and NH10

Gabbar is Back was a well made remake of a well-liked South Indian film that did hit business in India. We liked Akshay’s look in the film and the way it highlighted few of the social perils of India through a commercial outlook.

Court was adjudged the Best Feature Film at the 62nd National Film Awards but it released only in 2015 for the mainstream audience. It is a well researched, perfectly acted and directed courtroom drama that should be seen by as many people as possible.

NH10 showed us that Indian film actresses can kick butt. In a year of strong female characters, Anushka’s Meera was perhaps the most important character. NH10 is a solid thriller that plays like a horror film where the ghosts are the men of India bound by age old thinking. NH10 exemplified that less is more.

Underrated: Dolly Ki Doli, Hunterrr and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy

Perhaps the most underrated and under seen film 2015 is Dolly ki Doli which suffered because of the wrong marketing campaign and the negative stigma attached with the image of the makers of the film. Give it a watch and you will be surprised at how entertaining it is!

Hunterrr was the sex comedy from the Anurag Kashyap stable which could have become a classic but got bogged down by inconsistent storytelling. Nonetheless. Hunterrr deserves a watch for the unique idea it tried to showcase.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is not perfect and can even be labelled a bit self indulgent but it is much better than most of the drivel that passes for cinema in the Hindi film industry. Give it a try, if you like detective movies which are not spoonfed to you!

As we can see from the above list, 2015 has so far been a very good year for Bollywood when it comes to quality even though there hasn’t been a 200 crore earner in the first half. Let us know in the comments which where were your favorites movies and scenes/moments from the first half of 2015.

  • According to me the 5 Best Scenes of 2015 :
    1. The scene between Ajay and Taufeeq in Zeenat Mahal . Religion Waala Jo Column Hota Hai Usme Main Hum Bold Aur Capital Main Indian Likhte Hain . Epic is the only word to describe this scene . The crowd erupted with claps and whistles in the theatre .
    2. The Speech given by Maulana Mohammed Rehman . Jab Tak Pakistan Se America aur Kashmir Se India Vapaas Nahi Jaata Mohammed Rehman Aapki Giraft Main Nahi Aa Sakta . This scene gives Goosebumps when it seen that the Indian Flag is getting burnt in his eyes .
    3. The introduction scene of Kumari Kusum Sangwan to Manu and Pappi Ji . It was hilarious and amazing .
    4. The Hospital scene where Akshay exposes the corrupt Medical Fraternity . There is not so much Dialogue Baazi in this scene but the way Private Hospitals operate we feel shocked as well as feel bad . A powerful scene in every sense .
    5. There is a tie for this position .
The scene where Prem Prakash Tiwari and Sandhya convey each other’s feelings through Stereo . It is a very intelligent scene written by the Dialogue writer and it has been performed brilliantly by Ayushmaan and Bhoomi .
The other scene is the Climax scene of GIB when Aditya is about to get arrested and the mob wants Police to release Aditya . In this scene Aditya stands on top of the Police Jeep and says to the people to fight corruption and talks about Youth Power . He also gives the example of Shivaji Maharaj and says unhone bhi akele shuruat ki thi . People were hooting and whistling in this scene . Some people were shouting the slogan – Jai Bhavani Jai Shivaji . This scene explains that youth wants a Corrupt Free India .
Please post your opinions, suggestions and feedback on my comments . I would love to hear what you have to say . I am waiting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Below average.
Its boxoffice collection makes my exception high

  • Undoubtedly Kangana ‘s performance is far better than all performances in the films this year.and I’m sure this will remain the best performance till the end of the year in a female lead.and male lead till now manageable is Varun im badlapur followed by akki in baby.worst performances in male lead this year will be salman’s bb/prdp.and THE BEST PERFORMANCE in male lead surely be given by THE KING OF BOLLYWOOD for sure..

  • Gabbar ahead of DLKH, piku, Badlapur, NH10! ! Baby ahead of Piku and TWMR!

    Such things Happen on Indicine!

  • Many people were said here that ddd received better than gib , I don’t understand their logic as ddd collects less than gib in both first and second week despite higher average ticket prize as it collect from high end multiplexes while gabbar from ss, second thing is gib face toughest competition of the year from avengers aou & timepass 2 in first week,
piku in second week, Bv in third week and twmr in fourth and all these films are hugely appreciated and big hits except BV which was a big release and take away big no. of screens despite that gib did hit buiessness otherwise it will did more than 100 crs. , so keep facts right and don’t say nonsence just because you hate akshay.

  • Y everyone saying Badlapur? To be honest I didn’t find anything interesting in dat movie..foh me it was one of de worst movie ave seen dis year.

  • Reporter : That’s actually what the makers of Raees must be hoping for. That your Sultan will miss the Eid date next year…

Salman Khan : I don’t know what’s going to happen, but both Raees and Sultan are scheduled as Eid releases. It is perhaps the best thing to happen. People will try to accommodate both the films by building more theatres and lots more screens. There will be more excitement for fans. SRK and I will work much harder and pray that both films will be better. I love Shah Rukh a lot and I don’t think he needs to worry at all because the last time our movies came together he had beaten me. So, even if Sultan and Raees are releasing on the same day, loss mera hi hoga……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
@ Indicine , waiting for an article .

  • @arjun disaster’s fan, even KING SRK will choose a mediocre film, still HIS ACTING is far better than bhojpuri tingu along with all actors.HE is the TRENDSETTER of 10 PACK,so HE WON.best 100/200cr film is of course CE ahead of masala films like 3i/pk.that’s your opinion you liked crap ,please don’t force others to think like that.even some worst movies like pk also does great business because of some RELEGION FACTOR,the name Hirani who made great entertaining masala films and double ticket price, that doesn’t mean that movie is better than even a mediocre movie, that got success is only due to publicity.

@msn,ha ha ha ha bhikari bhaijaan’s trailer, songs all flopped big time, now only thing remained to be flop is the film itself. After that your bhau will again come with such 90’s expired overrated family crap Neil nitin bhai bachao.this things must your bhau have to do,as he doesn’t know what’s acting,ROFL.and don’t talk about WORLWIDE as your motu still is sitting in 300ww club and chasing CE,ROFL.go and train your non actor to learn some acting, then talk you bhojpuritards.
