Bang Bang vs Haider: Screens, Budget, Runtime and Poll

Two big films – ‘Bang Bang’ featuring Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif and ‘Haider’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor – are all set to release in theatres tomorrow.

The bigger film, quite obviously, is Bang Bang. It has a much bigger star-cast and the genre too is audience-friendly. Haider on the other hand is a dark film and clearly the first choice of the critics. In fact, a section of the mainstream media has put its weight behind Haider and already concluded that it will emerge victorious on Thursday morning.

Bang Bang vs Haider

An article on Rediff gave its readers 5 reasons why Haider could trump Bang Bang at the box office. The reasons given were Vishal Bharadwaj’s track record, Vishal-Shahid reunion after Kaminey, the fact that Siddharth Anand’s last film Anjaana Anjaani failed, remake of a flop Hollywood film ‘Knight and Day’ and the significantly higher budget of Bang Bang.

However, what the media hasn’t been telling us is that while Vishal Bharadwaj’s films have received critical acclaim, his box office track record is pretty poor. Omkara, one of his best films, didn’t work at the box office and his last two releases 7 Khoon Maaf and Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola were box office disasters. In fact, Vishal doesn’t have a single clean-hit to his credit so far, something that could change after the release of Haider tomorrow.

Quick comparison between the two films

  • Budget: Bang Bang – 140 cr, Haider – 37 cr
  • Runtime: Bang Bang – 156 mins, Haider – 160 mins
  • Screens in India: Bang Bang – 3600, Haider – 1250
  • Approx theatrical net business to recover costs (after satellite and other rights): Bang Bang – 160 cr, Haider – 55 cr

Our take: The clash will affect the opening day and weekend business of both films. If released solo, Bang Bang would have probably taken a record-breaking opening, beating the records currently held by Dhoom 3 and Singham Returns. Haider would also collect much more because of higher number of shows at multiplexes and single-screens.

However, in the long run, the content of the two films will decide how big an impact the clash would have. If Bang Bang is received well, its lifetime business would be somewhere close to how much it would have collected with a solo release. Word-of-mouth is more important for Haider though, as the film would have to carry positive reports from the theatres (read audience) and not just the critics. Bang Bang could even get away with mixed reports due to its genre.

  • @indicine,Fox Star Studios have given the report that….Bang Bang is releasing 4300 screens in India and 852 screens in overseas.so correct ur report

  • Bang Bang is my first choice this weekend.
I should get two chances to watch it so looking forward to both experiences.

Not a fan of Vishal or Shahid so I will give their Hamlet remake a total miss.

Critics on the whole may love Haider over Bang Bang but here on Indicine we all know that our resident Agony Aunt and Honourable Truth Speaking CritiK Nipun Kumar well go in the opposite direction and for once heavily favour a remake n complete masala movie like Bang Bang. No doubts he will claim its a classy film n an adaptation as opposed to copy n paste garbage but we all know the truth.

Cant wait for Bang Bang n not bcoz of Hritiks shivering sorry acting but bcoz of Nipuns hypocritical review n manipulated rating…!

  • Nipun Kumars review of Bong Bong in advance for those who cannot wait…

Bong Bong is not a remake of flop Knight n Day but an adaptation of the Hollywood cult classic Knight n Day…!

In the film our hero has a watergun and it miraculously fires bullets- these bullets are flying in all direction but unlike most masala movies Hrithiks aim was always on target…!

In another action scene our Hero HritiK drives his car on the wrong side of the road thus indicating huge bravado n showcasing great daredevilry as cars were in the way but Hritik managed to swerve out of the way without getting hit or inflicting a scratch on another car or person. wow great action.

Theres also a scene where Hrithik shot a guy 1 mile away between the eyes whilst flying through the air without wearing his Toofan cape catching a falling Katrina from a skyscraper… Again this was elegantly shot n not like most senseless masala movies where hero is shown to have shot a guy 2 miles away whilst doing a double somersault through the air etc etc

Katrina takes a bullet for our hapless hero in climax- again indicating this is a classy movie n not typical masala movie where normally the hero takes a bullet for his love or catches the bullet mid air…!

All in all Bong Bong is a class movie where the action is logical n in sync with the storyline…! Every car sequence was logical despite Hrithik speeding recklessly at the mere sight of a car in his rear view mirror…! Our hero senses danger hence he puts his foot down on the accelerator.

My rating is 7 out 5 bcoz 6 would be too harsh in my honest opinion.

    The breakdown is as follows:-
1 star for Katrina for looking good despite only having 4 words in movie which is 2 more than most of her masala movies of recent times.
1 star for the water gun as it miraculously fired 500rpm.
1 star for ‘tu meri’ song for appearing after 5 back to back car chase sequences to give us a chance to catch our breath.
1 star for Red Chillies for giving Hrithiks abs the same attention to detail they gave to King Sarkar.
1 star for Knight n Day writer.
1 star for Hrithik for staying calm n not shivering uncontrollably like he did in Angry Path climax where his nostrils were about to explode…!
1 star for Danny Sir to giving Hritik a commendable foe to grapple with unlike his previous craps.
Ok let me get out my calculator to see I have enough stars for a 5 star rating but if not then I can always use Rakesh Roshans logic of giving my films a unique star by shouting out loudly that its an original story…!

Bang Bang to rock ManipulationPur theatres and Jaaduland classrooms tomorrow…!

  • May both films be big hits..

@Navin Bhai, I ain’t a Shahid or a VB fan as well..but you have to watch Kaminey once if you haven’t..truly the second best movie of 2009 after 3 Idiots..

  • @navin what are u doing in UK so well that u have money to watch movie twice with family??? Maybe u are doing robin hood pandeyji corrupt practices like ur holy bhaijann so u have lots of cash and time to spare!

  • @sid

Sorry bro but as I just replied to trini- I prefer to only watch the big ticket movies no matter how crap they end up being. Even today my time is constraint n my kids hog the tv remote- I may never watch Kaminey n for that I wont lose any sleep over it- it just never gauged my attention. Glad you rate it that highly but 2009 was a sad yr as I only saw 2 films that yr n both were not great- 3 idiots I sadly saw in 2010 once work overtime slowed down after the holiday period.
