Bajrangi Bhaijaan records 2nd highest first week collections

Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan has collected Rs 184.65 crore in its first week at the box office, taking it to the 2nd spot in the highest first week totals of all time.

Unlike Dhoom 3, Bajrangi Bhaijaan was not a franchise film, not did it have a popular music album or action sequences that attract the masses. The credit for the record-breaking opening goes entirely to Salman Khan, who ensured that the film got a huge initial, after which the word-of-mouth took over.

So just how massive is the first week collections of Bajrangi Bhaijaan? Some points:

  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the 10th highest grosser of all time in just 7 days. Ahead of films like Dabangg, Dabangg 2, Bodyguard, Rowdy Rathore, Singham Returns and Bang Bang just to name a few.
  • The first week business of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is more than the combined business of both Akshay Kumar releases so far. Gabbar Is Back 85 crore, Baby 96 crore. Total Rs 181 crore.
  • The film smashed the record of the previous highest grossing film of 2015 – Tanu Weds Manu Returns (151 crore) – in just 5 days!
  • The first week business of Bajrangi Bhaijaan is more than the combined business of 80% of Bollywood releases so far this year.
  • The film was one of the fastest to cross the 100 crore mark (3 days) and the fastest of all time to cross the 150 crore mark (5 days)
  • A 20 crore holiday opening day would be considered outstanding for almost all stars in the industry outside the Top 4. But Salman’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan has collected 20 crore or more on 5 consecutive days, beating the previous record of 4 consecutive days by PK.

With one extra holiday or a release period like ‘KICK’ last year, when the Eid holiday fell during the weekdays, Bajrangi Bhaijaan could have probably become the first film to collect Rs 200 crore in its first week itself.

  • Loved each and every scene of bajrangi classic bhaijaan going to watch it again this weeknd it has tremendous repeat value
one of the best bollywood movie

  • The last 2 weeks has been the Best 2 weeks for Indian Cinema in a long time . Baahubali is going on a thunderous speed and doing mindboggling business . BB on the other hand is putting great numbers even on Weekdays . The First week record of Dhoom 3 has not been broken . PK came close but could not beat it and now BB also came close but still Dhoom 3 is on 1st Spot . I expect BB to do very good business in this weekend . BB is a good movie of Salman after a long time . The last movie of Salman which was good according to me was Dabangg and now BB . One of the Best Performances from Salman in his entire career . Harshaali deserves a standing ovation for her performance and Nawaz is always a huge force . This movie is 100 times better than ETT . It is good to see such an improvement from Kabir Khan and i hope he gives something lethal and brilliant in Phantom . Congratulations Salman Fans !!!!

  • @ Komal tu kyun nahi nahata-
    1. bb has eid holiday in weekend saturday collection not in weekdays. and by partial holidays in some states what do you mean? there is no muslim state.
    2. from saturday here is continue raining in indore and ujjain.
    3. how many theater shut down because of that hindu groups and how many days?
    4. bb has competition from today’s release masaan and baahubali still here. what was collections of ugly
and my question what about corporate booking in second week?

    • @Komal, those factors balance out in the end. For films carrying excellent word-of-mouth, like PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, holidays in Week 2 and a open third week makes a huge difference.

For example, Eid holiday was on Saturday, but even if it wasn’t BB would have still collected around 30-32 crore. But if Thursday was a holiday for Eid (like Christmas for PK), BB would have probably collected around the same as PK, which is around 28 crore.

So the difference of having holidays late in the first week and second week is huge, but only for films that are carrying positive reports.

About Hindu groups opposing the film. It also resulted in free publicity for PK across all television channels. If December cold affected PK, rains affected Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Not taking anything away from the historic run of PK, but no one can deny the fact that it had a slightly better release period. More holidays and 3 open weeks.

  • If BB has done this then imagine what PRDP will do if the music is as good as HAHK or MPK and if it has a Perfect Release date of post Diwali…? First 200cr opening week EVER could be a possibility…..

  • @Arjun Youngistaan Fan… you loser, mind your language. You do not have the sense of humour or intelligence to understand the conversation between me and Ajay Rocks. I respect both Ajay Devgn as an actor and love reading comments of Ajay Rocks too. He has a terrific sense of humour. If he has a problem, let me him reply to me. Why do you come in between?

What achievement are you talking about? Why do you lick Khan fans when their movie releases and does well? Why do you bash Akki? He has achieved much more when he was a chef in Bangkok, than you would achieve in your entire lifetime!!!

So chill out you crazy moron and stay out of this…

  • To outperform PK in first week is more to do with Salman bhais starpower. Positive WOM will kick in now n content will drive the film throughout the second week so cant wait to see what numbers it puts up this week. 45cr weekend looks a dead cert but it needs way more if it is to beat PK.

  • Biggest week for exhibitors in Bollywood EVER as its the first time they have seen over 200cr coming in…! Bahubali has collected around 27cr so with BB thats a whoooping 212cr…! Hindi cinema business may witness its first 200cr first week grosser and my money now is on PRDP…!

  • It must also be noted that Dhoom3 was released in Tamil & Talgu Languages. So now Bajrangi Bhaijaan holds the all time highest first week collection.

  • @Javed, don’t worry.. Drishyam will release in Pakistan and that only will assure 30 cr In just its 1st week. ; (

@Neeraj, lolz whatever happens to Drishyam, Ajay sir will never borrow Rakesh Ji calculator But u can help him sell more tickets, innit? ; (

@Arjunkapoorfan, thanks bhai Foh de support. Hope Sid’s brothers will become super hit.

  • Indicine — Post an article about first week collection in Hindi only. BB also losing in south region due Bahubali. So No matters loss or profit. I want to see fair comparison.

  • @ love indicine for clearing all the facts. earlier movies dubbed in tamil and telugu with telugu names. these telugu tamil version shouldn’t included in hindi movies because we have seprate bollywood industry from kollywood and tollywood.

  • @Javed, don’t worry.. Drishyam will release in Pakistan and that only will assure 30 cr In just its 1st week. ; (

@Neeraj, lolz whatever happens to Drishyam, Ajay sir will never borrow Rakesh Ji calculator But u can help him sell more tickets by manipulating BMS, innit? ; (

@Arjunkapoorfan, thanks bhai Foh de support. Hope Sid’s brothers will become super hit.

  • @Ajay Rocks.. Without using Rakeshji’s calculator, I can tell you one thing.

Craze for advance booking on Bookmyshow is as follows.

    1. Salman Khan, he sells the most tickets in advance
    2. Aamir.. could be because PK and Dhoom 3 were both highly anticipated
    3. SRK.. never heard of any SRK film not selling high volume of tickets in advance.
    3. Hrithik. Bang Bang had huge interest for advance, even Krrish 3.

For other actors.. it’s not the same. audience don’t come to book tickets in advance, but for Akki and Ranbir it’s decent.

Ajay usually nothing, very few tickets are sold before release.. but Singham advance was good. So yes, like you said…. he does need help to sell tickets :D

  • You posted two comments? Changed the second to manipulate? BMS is not producer numbers or BOI to manipulate.. computerised system.. only if tickets are sold it shows.

Go to BMS on Thursday and check advance of Drishyam… Bajrangi third week advance will be better :D :D

  • @ Ajay – i wish somebody remove battery from his calculator only after that he will appoint a good acountant.

  • let me tell you as a biggest salman khan fan i haven’t watched this movie yet due to work commitments n there are plenty others who have not watched it yet for various reasons.. people who have not watched it are waiting for the weekend to watch it due to extremely positive word of mouth n there are others who are waiting to watch it again.. dont be suprised by the second weekend collections.. its gonna be massive again..

  • Waiting for the epic jodi of salman and sooraj to comeback this diwali.
Mpk was the highest grosser of the decade 1980
Hahk was the highest grosser of the decade 1990
    Can prdp repeat that magic?
Definitely, it’s goanna be the highest grossing movie of 2015

  • Once again Indicine have responded in record time to another chameleon ID (komal gaurav420 nahta kSHITij ki saath) but my question about PKs overseas collection from 3 days ago has still not been answered…!

  • @yuvraj , i agree with you bro indicine should arrange a poll to find out which movie is better between bb and pk

  • @Neeraj, Drishyam is a niche movie so don’t expect a mindblowing box office numbers like BB or Dhoom 3..b webesides its a low budget film.

btw, you can manipulate or cheat the system if Drishyam advance booking is low since you are the manager there.;)

Btw I’m at work now in case I don’t reply to you very quickly

  • Nipuns biopic UGLY did not affect PK in second week despite manipulated favourable reviews from thr likes of Majeev Rasand and aNIPUNma Swift but Bahubal has affected BB in first week…! No denying that but despite this hurdle to beat PK and D3s hindi collections in first week is nothing sort of remarkable.

PS PK also didnt have a great music album nor great buzz pre release as most sites inc yourselves were more concerned about high ticket prices etc etc but that too did extremely well to beat D3 which had everything working in its favour except for those useless jobless retards Abhishek n YRF heir Ugly Uday Chopra…! Both films deserve applause to have gotten close to D3…!

  • @indicine

    Fair enough, agreed.

But, these comments saying that “BB would’ve surpassed PK easily if it had advantages like Xmas, New Year, more holidays etc”, should not be allowed to undermine what PK has acheived.
I have seen a lot of those remarks here on your articles by fans.

Also, one has to admit that Word Of Mouth and repeat value of PK was slightly better than BB, as you pointed in your Comparison article, and which is evident from the fact that BB fell about 25% from Mon to Tue, 18% from Tue to Wed, 18% from Wed to Thu.
PK remained consistent throughout, with a fall of about only 5-7% per day on weekdays.
This slighty better word of mouth and repeat value of PK would be the main defining factor for the difference between lifetime collections of BB & PK and not those partial holidays on New Year.

    Thanks and Cheers!
    Both movies rock!

    • @Komal.. show us the article where we said BB would have easily surpassed PK?

All that we said was, if BB falls just short of PK (by around 5%), then the extra holiday and open week would be the difference.

  • And @AjayRocks.. even Rakesh Roshan’s calculator won’t help Ajay Devgn.. What’s the percentage of difference? 190 including all versions.. as compared to 244.. about 30%..

Ajay’s films collect about 60 crore on average.. so even with Rakeshji’s calculator it’s 78..

The only time he needed to use that calculator was during Son of Sardar… and he made full use of it that time.. :D 80 cr se 103 kar diya :D
