Baby vs Gabbar Is Back: Box Office Comparison

Two Akshay Kumar films have released so far this year and both belonged to different genres. Neeraj Pandey’s Baby was targeted mainly at the multiplex audience, while ‘Gabbar Is Back’ was a massy film with a message to the society.

Both films also had plenty of holidays in their respective weekends. ‘Baby’ released during the Republic Day weekend, giving the film an extended 4-day weekend at the box office.

‘Gabbar Is Back’ released on a holiday, but had to compete against a massive Marathi film like ‘Time Pass 2’ and Kamal Haasan’s ‘Uttama Villain’. If not for competition, ‘Gabbar Is Back’ could have probably collected around 10-15% more.

The difference between the first week business of the two films is the holiday (Republic Day) on Monday for ‘Baby’.

Moving on to the lifetime business of the two films, ‘Baby’ remained steady for 2-3 weeks because the word-of-mouth was very positive. On the other hand, ‘Gabbar Is Back’ has failed to attract audience at premium multiplexes and has performed well mainly at smaller centres.

Can ‘Gabbar Is Back’ beat the lifetime business of ‘Baby’? Looks unlikely at this stage, because in 11 days, ‘Baby’ collected Rs 78.67 crore and ‘Gabbar Is Back’ has collected Rs 74.18 crore.

Also, the extraordinary response to ‘Piku’ and a big film like ‘Bombay Velvet’ competing for screens and shows at multiplexes, ‘Gabbar Is Back’ will be left with limited shows at multiplexes.

  • Akshay Sir please bring Deepika Priyanka and Katrina in yours then surely you will get ur first 200 crores movie

  • So basically both films lose steam around first week.!is that good for the future of hindi films where foreign films are doing better business!
Piku as entertainment is far far behind dum laga ke haisha

  • Piku is good film. so, Gabar collections came down in second week because of Piku’s good collections. next week again not much screens for
Gabar. Gabar will definitely will be less than 90 crores behind baby.
Gabar is also a not good film to cross 130 crores. Next week, Bombay Velvet will take all screens.

  • Expected good films from joker Kumar is simply doing waste of time .people should skip.his movies after brothers.

  • I don’t understand the hoopla about 100 crores. Are you guys so blind and stupid that you cannot understand that these movies are released on a very limited number of screens. C’mon, 3000 or 3500 screens indicate limited release from all angles. Happy New Year, Kick, PK etc are released on 5200 screens or more and given as many shows as possible. The costs of production for these films were 125, 100 and 85 crores respectively. Ticket prices are hiked as much as possible, so that much of the money comes within the 1st weekend itself.

Akki movies are semi-commercial these days, and their appeal is restricted only to a limited base. He is deliberately trying to become an actor instead of simply a star, unlike his contemporaries. And see, the gamble is paying off. The cost of production varies between 40 and 60 crores and if the producers were very serious about making money they would have released on more screens and hiked ticket prices. So they are clearly happy to get the return on their investment. Otherwise, Akki would not have his hands full with so many film offers. He is very profitable, even more than the Khans and this is proved by the fact that audiences love to see him 4 times a year even 23 years after he has come to Bollywood. He is the highest tax payer of B’wood. We should rejoice that he has moved from mindless blockbusters like Rowdy Rathore and has started giving serious, relate-able films like Baby, Special 26, Oh My God, Gabbar and Airlift. Cherish this time, Akki fans and non-Akki fans. The man won’t be there for more than 10 – 15 years. He is getting old too. This is the best of Akshay, the actor-superstar. Would you have liked if he had given mindless blockbusters like HNY that fail to satisfy you?

  • u all khan’s fan could u shut up ur mouth, only akki is giving huge fight to all bollywood khan without any godfather

  • baby is a descent film, and also a movie to be watched, gabbar is a same movie in yesterears with the old stuff in a new box. no doubt BABY still stands to the best.
