It’s been a record-breaking couple of weeks for film business in India. Both ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ are doing extraordinary business in the domestic markets and outside. But comparing a Telugu film ‘Baahubali’ with a Hindi film is not as simple and straight forward as comparing two Hindi films. There are so many factors that differentiate the two film industries.
We have listed some of the most important factors below:
- Entertainment Tax: There is a ‘HUGE’ difference between entertainment taxes for Hindi movies and Telugu or for that matter any other regional film.For example, in Maharastra, Hindi films pay approximately 50% as entertainment tax (varies depending on ticket prices), while Marathi films are tax free in the same state. For example, if 10,000 tickets of both Marathi and Hindi films are sold at Rs 300 each, the nett collections of Marathi film will be Rs 30 Lakhs, while the collections of Hindi films will be Rs 15 lakhs only as about 50% goes towards entertainment tax to the government. For Hindi films, entertainment taxes varies from state to state. Telugu films are charged 15% entertainment tax in home state, while the same tax as Hindi films would be applicable outside Andhra/Nizam territory, including dubbed versions.
- Language: The second factor is language. Just like English films have a massive advantage all over the world, Hindi films too benefit due to the fact that Hindi is understood by a majority people in India. So a film like ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ would have a decisive advantage over ‘Baahubali’ as most people outside Andhra Pradesh and Telangana do not understand Telugu. Yes, ‘Baahubali’ was dubbed in various other languages, but the experience of watching a film in its original language is entirely different.
- Stars: Who doesn’t know Salman Khan in India? The superstar has a fan-following in every nook and corner of the country, which significantly increases the business potential of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. On the other hand, Telugu actors have limited appeal outside their home state. In fact, Rana Daggubati, since he has done a few Hindi films, is a better known actor in other states as compared to Prabhas. The biggest superstar in Telugu films, the likes of Pawan Kalyan and Chiranjeevi, are well-known, but the business that their films generate is restricted to South Indian states.
- History: ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ is breaking opening records in India, but even if it does well enough to beat the Rs 340 crore (nett domestic) record of ‘PK’, it will only beat the film by a small margin. ‘Baahubali’ on the other hand is not even competing with other Telugu films. It has already more than DOUBLED the highest grossing Telugu film of all time and should go on to put up much bigger numbers. To give that some perspective, it’s similar to ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ collecting Rs 700 crore at the domestic box office, thereby trouncing the existing record of ‘PK’ and doing more than double the business. That’s how earth-shattering and record breaking the collections of ‘Baahubali’ have been. The previous highest grossing dubbed regional film was Rs 19 crore, the Hindi version of ‘Baahubali’ has already collected Rs 68 crore, which is more than 3 times the previous best!
- Budget: The two-part series of ‘Baahubali’ has been made at an estimated budget of Rs 225 – 250 crore. The scale of the movie is comparable to some of those Hollywood films. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ is a smaller film, that was made on a budget of less than 75 crore (cost of production).

Now that we have listed out the key factors that differentiate Kabir Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’, check out the box office collections of the film. We have distributors share, net collections (excluding entertainment tax) and gross collections (including entertainment tax).
Also note, that we do not believe in differentiating different versions of the film i.e Hindi, Telugu, Tamil etc. The cost of dubbing and release is included in the ‘LANDING COSTS’. Even if ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was released in Telugu and Tamil, the maximum collections from regional versions would have been around 10 crore – and collections of the Hindi version in those states would be affection. It balances out in the end.

Its huge achievement for a south film !! Althgh BB is doing much better but it needed a salman film to better it.. I mean if not 4 superstar films bahubali has done much better than films which dnt have top 5 bollywood actors.. infact if it wasnt for BB it cld have collected 100 cr in hindi itself.. more than even akki films.. that is jus phenomenal!!.. BB obviously is in top gear!!

I have seen bahubali and it was a outstanding film. Loved the cinematography, the tricks used in wars. The performances, direction top notch. Bahubali become the only Indian film which I watched in theatre not produced from Bollywood. Waiting for its second part in 2016. I will give 4.5/5 to bahubali.
Regarding BB I am planning to watch in this weekend, it has exceed all the expectations and performed outstandingly worldwide. Though still say Bahubali success is much bigger than any recent film, it can be compared to pk overseas success or 3i worldwide success when it released. I think bn will cross 300 cr and settle around 310-315cr domestic figure. Who knows even pk can be surpassed but has little chances. Overall win win situation for Bollywood lovers.

The success of Khans’ movies is a reality. But it is an artifical reality, if you are intelligent enough to understand it. North India has a proliferation of Muslims and the success of Khans is very vital for them to feel confident. So, each of them watch every Khan movie a dozen times to artificially make it a success and to ensure that their grip on the Hindi film industry remains intact. Bahubali, or for that matter, any movie by Hindus, and of Hindus does not have this religious fan following among Hindus who are also the fans of Khans like Muslims.
Indicine.. This is probably the sanest article I have come across on the whole of Internet. completely fair and stating facts like it should be. I was tied of hearing people saying – Bahubali was released in 5 languages.. The dimwits dont realise it doesnt matter how many languages you release in.. what matters is the number of screens, the appeal your language has. That point you have mentioned – Hindi movies carry more appeal all over India far far more than a dubbed regional movie in hindi carries in north. Also what matters is the number of movies its released in. Bajrangi bhaijaan released in 5000 screens compared to Bahubali which released in 4200. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand what Bahubali achieved is humongous and with all those restrictions in place and the limited appeal it had, it is a bigger hit than Bajrangi

Bahubali distributer share is 168 crores in 12 days. BB is 81 crores in 5 days. Even assuming BB experiences lesser drop than other big stars or even Salmans own movies for the remaining 7 days, even then achieving 87 crores is a humongous task for BB
BB released in 5000 screens worldwide.. Bahubali released in 4200 screens. Despite this the collections are matching
India nett for Bahubali after 12 days is 254 crores. BB after 5 days is 151 crores. Now les use sensible prediction of what BB may do in remaining 7 days
BB first 5 days 151 crores next 5 days 55-60%%(which is a lot) of first 5 days(which was Eid) which will be 85crores so total of about 235 crores in 10 days. the remaining 2 days are the wednesday and thursday of second week. how much do u think it will be -14-15 crores – which is still lesser than 12 collection of Bahubali in india. At best BB can match Bahubalis collections of 254 cr nett and that despite releasing in more screens, having the biggest super star of the country, being a mainstream bollywood movie and releasing on Eid

Eventhough i am a fan of bollywood movies but i vote baahubali is the clear winner in race with BB in terms of boxoffice. Bcz a regional film doing 350+ crores WW is not a small thing.
One of your user told that Baahubali is smashing hit in overseas but where compared to BB.
I heard that previous telugu lifetime in overseas was just $1.7 million but baahubali collected $9 million and US being only its market where it collected $7.68 million which is next to PK Lifetime in U.S.A.

BB total number of theatres is 6000 released in about 50 countries. 5300 theatres in India. while for Baahubali only 4200 theatres. In USA , Baahubali has more collection than BB. Another south Indian movie ( Tamil starring Dhanush), MAARI, has more collection than BB in Malaysia.
Both movies written by the vijayendra prasad,he is rajamoulis father.both are BB.

Bahubali is an awesome Indian movie, a Epic story. One of the greatest Indian Director Rajmouli, has proved Indian movies are no way less to Hollywood movies. He has bought epic story to reality. Bahubali has already broken most of the Indian records and yet to break.
