The pairing of Ajay Devgan and director Milan Luthria has been a successful one thus far with 3 films (2 hits) in their kitty. Now they’re back for their fourth film together with the Bakri-Eid release ‘Baadshaho’. It is a multicast film and the trailers have promised a movie which is set in the past but has a contemporary look. Does the heist film end up being as thrilling as heist films are supposed to be?
Story: The year is 1975 as is boldly proclaimed. Princess Gitanjali (Ileana) of a province in Rajasthan has had the last ancestral gold of her family confiscated by the Government who are transporting it back to Delhi. Gitanjali enlists the help of her trusted security-in-charge Bhawani Singh (Ajay) to commit a heist and steal the gold back. He gathers a team of misfits – Dalia (Emraan Hashmi), Sanjana (Esha Gupta) and Tikla (Sanjay Mishra). Things get interesting when stern army officer Major Seher (Vidyut) crops up and makes things difficult for the gang. Will they be able to steal the gold back and bring it to Gitanjali? Watch the film to know!
Milan Luthria with the help of writer Rajat Arora has delivered a film that has turned out to be a more entertaining product than it promised to be. There are creative liberties taken as the film is placed around real life events, but they are not dumbly inserted in the script. Baadshaho aims to make the heist genre meaningful and to an extent it gives the genre an extra coat of layering than we’re used to seeing. The chemistry of the gang is breezy. The scenes keep flying in the beginning but a major lull appears when action scenes go on for too long. Why are Bollywood directors so fascinated with overdrawn action sequences? Eventually, Baadshaho ends up being an entertaining affair all things considered, if you can ignore the subtle propaganda. There are loopholes too in this heist actioner but the director smartly makes the viewer overlook them.
Baadshaho has a period setting and therefore it needs to get a lot of things right – and it does. The production design and costume design takes us back to the year 1975. The cinematography and action choreography however make the film look contemporary. The scale is big and it shows in the frames. The editing is nippy and the film doesn’t feel too long (except for the action scenes). Mere Rashke Qamar has become one of the biggest hits of the year and the other songs like Socha Hai and Piya More are also decent. Thankfully there aren’t too many songs to disturb the flow.
Acting: Ajay Devgan is supposed to be the main star attraction of the film but Baadshaho is not an out-and-out Ajay Devgan film per se. He is brilliant in his role as Bhawani Singh, the royal protector who is secretly in love with his princess. Just the right amount of emotions come across his eyes and body language. Emraan Hashmi is back to his usual charming self and his Marwari accent steals the spotlight in the film. Vidyut Jamwal brings across the stern officer deftfully and his acting has definitely come of age. Sanjay Mishra is the comic relief as the aged lockpicker and he’s hilarious. Ileana does her job as the pretty princess and her acting is serviceable. Esha Gupta needs to work on her acting because it still feels like she’s ‘acting’ which should not be the case when the other cast members are so talented and natural in their performances.
Conclusion: Baadshaho delivers on its promises of being a thrilling heist film and it is entertaining for the majority of its duration. There are flaws like loopholes, overdrawn action scenes, inconsistent detailing but they’re merely technical. If you’re willing to suspend your disbelief and if you want to enjoy a badass Bollywood film with whistle worthy dialogues then you can’t go wrong with Baadshaho this week. Give it a watch and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Pros:
- Looks contemporary even if it is set in 1975 because of cinematography
- Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi are in fine form
- It is a solid entertainer (a proper Hindi film) and gets the heist part right
- Dialogues (Rajat Arora) are whistle worthy
- The editing is snappy and film is short
Cons:
- There are plot loopholes
- The action choreography goes on for too long
Rating:
No matter how many stars Baadshaho gets… It will easily cross JHMS collections ??
Can I go to watch badshaoo tomorrow????
Is it a must watching
Honest reply hoping!!!!
just saw baadshaho……..its more than what u expect…..brilliant acting dialogues and thrill……ajay sir nails it again……superhit…
so bth emran ajay will gv a much needed hits for themselves or maybe nt . emran will help ajay to gv a double digit opening othrwse 6-7cR opening in between drshym & shivay .if it failed to touch 10 With emran’s additional star lower thn i salute Ajay’s stardom .
Ha ha ha. Ajay Devn and stardom? These are two opposite polls. Don’t act like a fool by bashing an actor like Coalmine Devgn. It proves your IQ level. Do you see anybody bashing actors like Sunil sherry, saif Ali khan, govinda, etc? Then why bash Ajay? He is in the same category as the above respective megastars. LOL.
Don’t act fool by bashing Ajay. He is too small a star to give 13 cr opening forget 20s, 30s and 40s is Mount Everest for him.
@jaz
Even u know who is the most consistent
Its srks bad phase u lunkhead. still his films open better than akki
btw i like akki as he defeated salman 4 times in clash
sangdil sanam vs hum hai bemisaal
andaaz apna apnq vs suhaag
garam masala vs kyu ki
blue vs mamk
2 times last decade
2 times in 90s
and tepk is struggling to beat clashed raees. srk has achieved enough. jumping in 5 hits isnt a good thing mate. especially when ur idol has stooped down the level of doing side role in tamil films after failing to deliver more than 2 bbs in bollywood
By that logic, SRK too played side roles in Darr and Josh.
Baadshaho had Excellent teaser/trailer , Chartbuster songs , Masala film will open Max at 11cr.. But this haklutard @sayar thinks that Ajay film can open better than Akshay ?..
Looks like his Ass is still burning after what tepk did to jhms.. Now even in his dreams this pig won’t say that ouatimd and CE was a clash
@sayar haklutard pls elaborate except Rustom/Tepk which Akshay’s film had excellent trailer?? Hf3, jolly??
Mark my words if tepk trailer was released exactly a month ago it would smashed jhms opening day by miles..
Highest TP, A grade actress, Imtiaz Ali, pritam still failed to cross 15 ? and idiots like u talk about a film like tepk which is made on one of the most taboo subject ??
Looks like it will do 70-90crores
This is the same movie which Indicine has ignored fully and see now people are liking baadshaho and hopefully will be a hit/superhit. .wow great comeback ajay sir..
Very happy for ajay devgan..he is very much versatile as an actor and much better than many new young gen. Stars .in every deptt.
again a review to fool the audiences.biased website no 1.overhyped review
@Deadpool 2.0
Dude why r u bringing SRK in between??
And believe me the person whom u are calling hakla is the most fluent speaker of the industry
And SRK has 7 movies whose footfalls are more than Akki’s highest Mohra
And for me only Bollywood film matters.
SRK has 6 record openers
I like Akki as he has defeated Salman 5 times in clash
Read my reply to @jaz
Now akki fans saying about opening. Lol… Pehle 20 cr + toh karo ajay ka 32 cr hai.. Lifetime Ajay singham returns 140 cr + arre pehle rowdy rathore toh cross karo.. Iss saal toh sirf 2 hi movie thi utna toh srk Salman ka bhi hota hai
Pretty bad movie. Only saving grace emraan hashmi and sanjay mishra. Uncooked thriller with absolute rubbish climax. All other actors look as they were forced into acting. Bad direction. 1/5.
@sayae:side role ya powerful role movie release hone k bad pata chalega.indicine mein tabhi ayega toh?darega toh nahi?
@sayar:abey duffer don’t tell that it’s a Tamil or a Telugu film.tell that its an Indian film n robo 2 will make film industry proud just lyk bb 2 did.lageyega bet?
@Sayar… Srk is not in bad phase, his career is finished.
