  • Really indicine? Salman has 14 million followes? Isn’t his official twitter page called “BeingSalmanKhan”? It only has 6.3 million followers. If it is not, please tell me what is his official twitter page. Plus what is Amir’s official twitter page? Can’t find a page with such a number of followers.

  • Congrats to Big B but sometimes this shows that box office performance and star popularity is different. An article by omax media to clarify it
Star Popularity vs. Box Office: Not The Same Thing!
Posted on January 8, 2014 by Shailesh Kapoor

Last week, @OrmaxMedia tweeted annual results of its star popularity tracking research called Ormax Stars India Loves (OSIL). As per the results, Akshay Kumar ranked as the third most popular male star in India, in 2013, behind Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. Katrina Kaif led the female stars list, well ahead of Deepika Padukone.

Every time OSIL results are tweeted, we get some standard questions in response. These examples capture their essence:

    1. How can Katrina be no. 1 when Deepika has given four big hits this year?
    2. Akshay Kumar at no. 3? All his films this year have flopped except Special 26.
    3. Rani in the top 10! Are you kidding me? When did she last do a film?
    4. Salman at no. 1 without any release in 2013? But Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 are the biggest grossers. Your survey is wrong.

Most of these questions (largely from fans and fan clubs) have a common and rather simplistic answer. That popularity and box office are two different metrics.

Box office depends on a wide array of factors. While star cast is the leading factor amongst these, other factors can play more than a significant role in determining the box office fate of any film, be it the opening or the lifetime collections. Some of these factors are genre appeal, music, promos, director, word-of-mouth, reviews and franchise appeal.

Popularity, on the other hand, is only about the star’s recall value and equity amongst the audiences. No other factor, including those listed above, have a bearing on a star’s popularity. In simple terms, star popularity, as captured through OSIL, is a measure of a star’s fan base. OSIL covers an annual sample size of more than 40,000 cine-goers in 29 cities in India. Statistically, that’s as representative as we can realistically get in estimating a star’s fan base.

Let’s take the case Akshay Kumar. His fan base being bigger than that of Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, as per OSIL 2013 results. So when his films flop, it simply means that he is not using his equity well. He is either working with the wrong scripts and directors, or signing up films in dead or declining genres (such as masala action in Boss). If he continues to do this for a while, his fan base will obviously take a hit. But fan bases, fairly loyal as they are, don’t desert their favorite stars overnight.

Then there is the other aspect of acting abilities, often mentioned in the Katrina vs. Deepika debate. Katrina can’t act, is a social media argument often given for her supposedly undeserving place on the top. This argument rests of a flawed assumption – that acting skills play a pivotal role in building and strengthening the fan base for a star. In fact, there is very little research evidence to this effect. Katrina’s “personality”, defined in India as a mix of looks, presence, speech and attitude, has driven her fan base for more than five years now. Her careful selection of roles that allow her to use her personality well, has played a crucial role in making her as popular as she is today.

“No. 1 star” and “No. 1 actor” are two entirely different things. And the day they merge, the concept of stardom will die a natural death. Thankfully, we are nowhere close to that happening.

This was a clarification post to settle the incessant twitter debates on OSIL results. Hope it does that at least in some measure!

  • Congratulations.Big B is now the 3rd megastar after Salman khan and Aamir khan to have 10 million followers in the most popular social networking site facebook.

  • Facebook following shows the popularity of any star bcoz almost everybody uses it worldwide. So Salman khan,Aamir khan and Big B can be called as the top 3 most popular bollywood stars worldwide.

  • Akshay Kumar Has 8.4 Million… Salman is way ahead of others…I guess only Rehman is ahead of him from Btown.. and how come SRK is lagging so behind ? I really wonder… he usually wins every given online poll.. but ???…

  • SRK has only one social networking account and that is twitter…all accounts of his name are fake..on twitter SRK lags behind Amitabh Bachchan.SRK has 7 million followers on twitter and AB has 8 million followers.soon SRK will leave AB behind in terms of number of followers on twitter.love u srk.
    Both are true legends.

  • wow salman tops everywhere today boi is also publish the top star of march and salman clearly tops the chart.this is the proof that he is biggest superstar of country where as in trp, boxoffice, social sites, most searched celebrity he is at top everywhere now what you say haters.

  • SRK has 7.2 million likes while Salman has its double 14.3 million, Aamir has 11 million and Hrithik has 9.6 million
    So in terms of popularity,
    Salman>Aamir>Amitabh>Hrithik>SRK lol

  • It’s all dependent on how much times a superstar stays online.hrithik comes very less time online compared to salman, akki, srk,pc, still 9.6! !really commendable!

  • Lol haters salman is biggest superstar of Indian cinema history Facebook prove it salman is ahead of big b and srk by Miles

  • deepika, shreya goshal and ar rahman have more likes than sallu on their facebook pages. and akki has more than srk but as usual u didn’t mention his name.

  • Nobody can ever beat the popularity of Amitabh in their lifetime. He was and still is a phenomenon.

There is no comparision now and never to be compared during his height of populairty from mid 70s to 80s.

Only Salman has given the glimpses of that kind popularity and superstardom in the last few years that mimicked Amitabh’s.

I would say take Salman’s popularity and multiply it by 10 that is Amitabh Bachchan.

Others are way too far behind.

Ironically both were hated by media.

  • Where is Romance Expiry now??? What happened to 3.8 billion fans of srk?? And some morons call srk a Global King. Lol !!!!

  • who cares about facebook? it is becoming obsolete day by day as more and more youths and young adults are leaving and the old timers and aunties are joining…………………salman fans are mainly old timers and aunties who remember him from HAHK and MPK days hahaha the young hot women and cool young men are SRK’s fans……………….. SRK still rules thats why CE was second highest grosser last year even though it was not a highly anticipated sequel and had competition for 3-4 weeks and much lower budget that K3 and D3……………………………………………………

  • it doesn’t matter how much likes an actor have on social networking sites..its films success which relates to the real stardom of a star..after having abt 8.4 million likes on fb akshay kumar is struggling to give a hit…even Tom cruise has only 6.6 million likes on fb.
In top 10 overseas grossers,SRK has 6 films. While lallu has only 1 film and tingu has 2 films.
likes of Akshay kumar, hritik roshan unable to find a place in top 10 as the list is completely dominated by SRK..
@Hritik SRK is,was, will be the global superstar..
He dont need fb likes from rikshawalas like you…
We die hard SRKians are enough for SRK..SRK Don’t need fake likes on fb as some of so called fake superstars lallu and tingu has….

  • and according to followers on twitter amitabh > shahrukh > salman > amir > priyanka > deepika > hrithik singers are not even near it shows singers are popular on facebook and actors are more popular on twitter

  • I know that first Salman than Aamir crossed the 10 million likes, now Big b joined soon, in twitter Srk had 6 million followers while Aamir and Salman had little short, but i am just waiting for 3.7 billion followers because Srk’s twitter and Fb followers=Salman fb followers. I think romance expiry and poor kid @sss was talking about Bakra’s of Bakrapur, earlier srkian was termed as Pagalpurians now the name slightly changed and becomes Bakrapurian lol.

  • there was a comment of this guy @khan “National Anthem>>____>>>>>SMJ anthem”. We Aamir fans love our country and its pride than any other song or icon. Country first came than every thing else but he dare even to compare “Bakra dance Anthem” which he forgot to mentions in those spaces that this song is only comparable to National anthem although its not great like National anthem but still comparable to them. So dear have you don “bakra dance, bakra dance”.

  • @indicine: Oops! Thanks for making me notice it. As it says “followers” it went into my head as twitter. Sorry bout it.

  • According to Facebook Neha sharma is as popular as SRk in India … Kajal Madhuri sonakshi kaplil are way ahead of srk…. ranbir is not at all popular.. by the way I love Neha sharma
