Akshay Kumar reigns supreme at the box office, decimates opposition

Akshay Kumar’s Rustom is not just performing very well at the domestic box office, but the film has completely decimated and annihilated the other release last week – which was one of the year’s most anticipated films starring Hrithik Roshan in the lead.

Now, there are clashes that are won by a small margin and there others that are won by a big margin. Mohenjo Daro’s director Ashutosh Gowarikar himself was at the receiving end when a film like ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ went on to be the biggest grosser of all time, more than doubling the business of a classic like ‘Lagaan’.

But the scenario back then was completely different. Gadar was a massy action film with chartbuster music. Lagaan did well at the box office too, but the appreciation that the film received was unprecedented. It went on to be only the third film in the history of Indian Cinema to get a Oscar nomination. While Gadar was the box office winner, Lagaan was the better film.

There was another big clash that took place in 2006, when the combined star power of Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan in ‘Jaan-e-mann’ wasn’t enough to beat Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Don: The Chase Begins’, which collected nearly two times more than the Shirish Kunder directed romantic film.

However, the Mohenjo Daro vs Rustom clash particularly stands out as Mohenjo Daro was the bigger film and also appealed to a wider section of the audience. Yet, Rustom could eventually collect nearly 2.5 – 3 times more than Mohenjo Daro.

Even before the release, it was a forgone conclusion that Mohenjo Daro would lose the clash, but the biggest shocker has been in the way in which it has lost. Even much smaller films like Ki and Ka, Baaghi and Udta Punjab have comfortably gone past the 50 crore mark.

In an industry that survives and benefits from perception, Rustom could be a game-changer for Akshay Kumar. It’ll change the way the trade looks at his upcoming films like ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and ‘Crack’. If those films open like Rustom has, he’ll take more credit than he otherwise would for the massive opening of ‘Robot 2.0’.

2016 has been an extraordinary year for the superstar and 2017 could be better. If he does step it up, the purple patch that he has now hit could well be bigger than what was previously though to be his career-high in the mid 2000s.

  • Akshay is an amazing actor but it wasn’t hr fault the movie was pathetic had it been average hr would have won the clash , hirithik is capable of giving good opening bang bang collected 27 cr on first day and akshy movie has never touch 20 cr what horithik needs to do is avoid clash and sign more movies h will be back

  • Akshay Kumar is a good man but his fans are mostly Bhakts and Khan-haters and anti-Muslims who doesn’t understand a single thing about movies .

    Golden lines.
And then few fanbases talka about clashes and their implications.
Yes, in this phase of his career, SRK should avoid clashes as his last two releases couldn’t perform well at box-office, but then, before mocking him regarding the release date of his movies – one should not forget how he has thrashed his opponents in past (barring few exceptions).

  • Funny how haters are against Akshay..
Many can’t bear it Lol Shah Rukh fans barking more than even Hrithik fans.
As an Ajay Sir Fan I will want Hrithik to release his next movie solo and put the burden on Ajay to clash badshaho with Teesra Khan Raees and allow Hrithik a good solo. Can’t stop laughing!!!!

  • to beat Mohenjo daro is nothing more than to beat a Rajpal yadav movie, Hrithik has only zero star power,Hrithik next movie is kaabil which directs Sanjay gupta who directed 11 movies,10 of them were big flops & 1 was avg kaante…so Hrithik can’t survive in bollywood after 2 years…he is gone his movies can’t work at bo

  • One film doesn’t decide the fate of a Superstar…MD failed at box-office because of clash, negativity before release..but HR’s performance keeps this film alive…
But HR will surely bounce back again…He has all the elements..From now,He should be careful choosing script and do more movies..We also can’t afford 2 years long gap..

  • Rustam should finish between RR and SR. Which shall be phenomenal. I support @Aishaji last article 2016 will be Belong to Akki sir while 2016 shall be landmark year again for Salman and Shivaay to be also turning point for Aj sir a remarkable 200 c target.

  • indicine talk some logic …. after man mela , mangal pandey amir did come back….hrithik is in different zone than akshay …..

  • Where is akki’s stardom without patriotism ?
    Akki from 2013
    Ouatimd -not patriotic (not hit)
    boss -not patriotic (not hit)
    holiday -patriotic (hit)
    entertainment -not patriotic (not hit)
baby -patriotic(still not hit but flop hone se bach gya)
    gabbar is back -patriotism(hit)
    brothers -not patriotic (not hit)
singh is bling -not patriotic (not hit)
    airlift -too much patriotism (superhit)
housefull 3 -no patriotism (underperformance but hit due to franchise)
rustom -a murder mystery but forcefully inserted patriotism for making movie a hit (verdict : pending)
So ,simply akki is selling his movie in the name of deshbhakti otherwise he is still a strugler at box office
    NO PATRIOTISM -NO HIT

  • It is very shocking because MD touted to be most-awaiting movie of the year..And expectation were so high..Because so many efforts and time were wasted making this movie..Ashutosh and HR gave their all efforts..It will be a big loss for hindi film industry also…Because everyone will be scared to even touch historical genre after MD…And shocking thing is also is celebs only support rustom..and ignored MD..
It just unfair on a big clash like Independence Day..A big loss for Industry..

  • Leave alone the credit just imagine how humongous the opening of 2.0 wud be…MOVIE WILL ROCK BIG TYM PAN INDIA..AKKI+RAJINI

  • @ gupta : r u from bihar?? Coz ur logic states so… 1 hr = 100 akki!!! Read the article above, in this clash, rustom will collect 2.5-3 times than md :-D shame…

  • For 2.0 everybody knows opening down south will be massive but what about Hindi belts ??? No offense to rajnikant but he can’t provide opening in Hindi belts…
When it will release compare it’s opening in Hindi region with Kabali…!!!
    You will get your answers
    North Akshay
    South Rajnikant
    Class dismissed..!!!

  • Guys take a moment and laugh on these foolish HR fans who think Akki’s films are working bcoz of patriotism.

If that’s the case, why did Lakshya failed at the Boxoffice? Lol

Forget patriotic films,Let Mohenjodaro cross Entertainment’s lifetime collections which was sandwiched between Kick and Singham Returns, received terrible reviews too.

  • @Sunny Akkiholic:
Thupakki remake has already been made,Holiday!
I think you were talking about Theri remake #IKKA

  • I agree Jann e Mann lost to Don but u can see how things changed the lead actor of Don ran away from eid just by watching the 50sec teaser of the lead actor of Jann e Mann. It’s better to die in the battle field instead of running away like a coward. Salman fought hard though he was aware of the fact he may lose on the other hand srk ran away like a coward.

  • Akshay it is all about movies as business …. 40 days per shoot …. 3 movies a year …. 100cr per movie and 100cr every year for himself ….
