Ajay Devgn talks about politics, comedy, producing films and more

Bollywood star Ajay Devgn, who was in Bihar last week to attend a political rally for BJP leader Sunil Kumar amid ongoing assembly polls, says he doesn’t have any intention to join politics.

Asked whether he has any plans to join politics, Ajay, who attended the ongoing CII Big Picture Summit 2015, said: “Not at all, that’s the first thing I said there. I don’t intend to join politics.”

The 46-year-old, who popular in Bihar after his roles in Prakash Jha’s “Gangaajal” and “Aarakshan”, missed the chance to address a rally the Bihar due to an “overwhelming turnout” because of which his chopper couldn’t land. He later urged organisers to have better arrangements.

Ajay also took to Twitter to apologise to the people of Biharsharif and Nalanda for not addressing the rallies.

“Apologies for not being able to reach the rallies at Biharsharif and Nalanda since the administration did not give permission because of the unmanageable crowds,” he tweeted at that time.

The actor also spoke about his film choices and added that comedy takes a lot of energy and timing.

“When you are an actor you do not think about genres… When you are doing comedy you do think, ‘Oh I wish I was doing a serious film as it takes less energy’. Comedy needs a lot of energy and timing. When you are doing action you feel tiring. I like to switch and do different things,” Ajay said.

“I’ve been very lucky. If I’ve tried a comedy it has worked. Or if I tried drama or a serious film, they too have worked. So people are more comfortable coming to me for doing such films, which a lot of people try and if it doesn’t work they get scared” he added.

Ajay was felicitated at the opening day of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) summit by Sudhanshu Vats, chairman, CII National Committee on Media and Entertainment and Group CEO, Viacom 18 Media Pvt. Ltd.

During the event, Ajay also stressed upon how we can match ourselves with Hollywood by stopping “piracy and increasing the number of screens in India”.

Asked about his favourite director he most liked working with, Ajay said: “I’ve worked with every kind of director. In the 1990s I was the first actor, who started working in so called ‘art cinema’. Today it is not called art cinema as there are no films like ‘Dil Kya Kare’ or directors like Govind Nihalani, Rituparno Ghosh.

“I had those films where people thought I was crazy as a commercial actor doing films like these. But I learned a lot from these films. Also I’ve a lot of respect for Mahesh Bhatt. The only thing I tell everybody and tell him also is that I wish he could come back and direct again. His last film that he directed was ‘Zakhm’ for which I got a National Award and after that he quit. So I really miss him.

Ajay spoke about producing films being more stressful than acting or directing.

“I won’t say that donning the hat of a producer is my favourite one but I love doing it because it stresses you out too much. Rest as an actor or a director, I’m pretty much comfortable handing both, so I don’t have to worry about that.

“Where direction is considered, I’m very comfortable because of my father. When I was 11 years old, I used to edit his sequences, which were very difficult for people to edit. It was a lot of training at that point of time because I loved my work and learned from it.”

  • Wow this guy is outstanding . I just love the way Ajay speaks . In 1991 a Average looking guy made his debut and now in 2015 he is one of the most sought after actors in Bollywood . This has been a great journey for AD and i hope continues forever . I think no active actor should join politics because it really damages their image . Amit Ji said joining politics was the biggest mistake of his life . Ajay is a versatile actor and has proven his versatility by doing different kind of genres like Action, Romance, Comedy, Drama, Offbeat and also Commercial Potboilers . Congratulations AD for getting Award from CII Summit for your excellence in Cinema . I hope Bro with Shivaay you can do something which you have never done before . God Bless you Ajay Sir .
    Fantastic Actor
    Humble Human Being
    Caring Father
    Loving Husband
    Action Hero
    King of Intensity
Everything is great about you Ajay Sir and i hope you will make Bollywood proud with Shivaay and Sons Of Sardaar .
@ Indicine Super Stuff from you indeed . If you bring such kind of articles your credibility will increase by leaps and bounds . Keep up the good work and please pay heed about what i asked you regarding Baahubali yesterday night …………

  • ajay dnt get urself in politics…nt gud fr straight n outspoken guy like u…
AD has intensity more than any 1…
he shld do films which tht others cant do…
like gangaajal.. legend of bhagat singh…
    nt crao like SOS..

  • I am not waiting for Ajay’s movies always, first i listen apprecuations from others then i watch Ajay’s movies like Drishyam it was fantastic movie thumbs up for Ajay for Drishyam

  • His comic timing was perfect in All the Best.Loved him in that movie. But honestly his performance in Drishyam wasn’t something extraordinary. In the climax sequence he just had the same blank expression when he confronted with the child’s parents. He underplayed the role too much.Maybe I am being biased since I have seen bits of previous versions but still I expected more from him.
But still he is one of the most versatile actors.

  • He has very correctly said that we have to increase the number of screens and stop piracy in order to complete with Hollywood..but one more important factor is the currency rates..we have a long way to go as far as currency differentiation is concerned

  • waiting 4 directional debute of KING OF INTENSE ACTING Ajay Devgan in SHIVAAY(diwali 2016)…1st look is Impressive !!!!

  • Now somebody will say tht y u attached star word for ajay devgan instead of superstar . Well it’s bang on !!!!!

Saif=Ajay =Shahid in terms of stardom.

Nd BTW I m shocked, ajay devgan can also talk ? Good to know …! Nd bihar iz d perfect city for him because just like bihar, ajay devgan can’t also developed …! He will remain outside top 5 forever….!

  • Nd y he took twitter to apologise? ? U need to hve some fans first to tweet ..
He should hve apologise on a road from a speaker …! This iz d only way he can attract public.

  • Agree with @challa..Drishyam definitely not one of his memorable performances. And his character n the setting did’nt made him look as if he was a lower middle class man of a small Goa town.
Just watch the trailers of Drishyam(malayalam) and Papanasam(tamil) versions of Drishyam, you will get to know what I am saying.

  • Look at him in d pic, looks like he gonna fall asleep on D table .

    Poor man
Kajol is back in acting again for dilwale, ajay sir akele ghar nhi chla pa rhe ??

  • @sunny, ajay still has much bigger opening record than the emperor of bankruptcy to the producers no need to guess, Joker boy. Yes, joker boy’s few fans are extremely useless just like his crap movies, as they only fart on indicine, twitter and other sites, but most of them dont give a damn to his single film since 2009 its quite evident. Don’t worry about ajay as he is much bigger star than floppy Kumar. Shivaay and baadshaho will earn way more than crapfull 3, waterlift and chupa rustam.

  • No matter how much you try to dislike this guy your inner conscious pinches you when you are about to type anything bad against Ajay. @saksham said it all. So honest so jovial ,never give excuses for his bad moments and never brags about many things braggable. Congo Ajay. A real superstar that has achieved alot.
    From a Rowdy fan?

  • Lol. ..let some other actors learn how to tweet not tweet when they are drunk or mix bhojpuri dialects in them

  • @sunny chechi. Idiot when he is in the air with his chopper yet to land they were commotion chaos confusion prior to his landing. If they can be so restless before AD touching the ground think if he lands on the ground and stay on the road with loudspeaker before he utters a word the whole town would’ve distorted him. On air commotion on ground you can imagine! Apart from being a true icon in the industry he is a eal patriotic citizen of the nation and only idiots like you don’t know that he is representing Bollywood as a whole to spread his perception and even want to see us compete with Hollywood. I know it’s quite far but at least he is.making an effort and not for himself bcos he knows he will retire soon but on behalf of the future next generation of Bollywood actors! Get that straight! This gesture is far more matured and classier than going to a Chief minister to promote his movies!! Wtf is your problem?
@Saksham excellent comment!! You said all I wouldv said .
