Akshay Kumar reigns supreme at the box office, decimates opposition

Akshay Kumar’s Rustom is not just performing very well at the domestic box office, but the film has completely decimated and annihilated the other release last week – which was one of the year’s most anticipated films starring Hrithik Roshan in the lead.

Now, there are clashes that are won by a small margin and there others that are won by a big margin. Mohenjo Daro’s director Ashutosh Gowarikar himself was at the receiving end when a film like ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ went on to be the biggest grosser of all time, more than doubling the business of a classic like ‘Lagaan’.

But the scenario back then was completely different. Gadar was a massy action film with chartbuster music. Lagaan did well at the box office too, but the appreciation that the film received was unprecedented. It went on to be only the third film in the history of Indian Cinema to get a Oscar nomination. While Gadar was the box office winner, Lagaan was the better film.

There was another big clash that took place in 2006, when the combined star power of Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan in ‘Jaan-e-mann’ wasn’t enough to beat Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Don: The Chase Begins’, which collected nearly two times more than the Shirish Kunder directed romantic film.

However, the Mohenjo Daro vs Rustom clash particularly stands out as Mohenjo Daro was the bigger film and also appealed to a wider section of the audience. Yet, Rustom could eventually collect nearly 2.5 – 3 times more than Mohenjo Daro.

Even before the release, it was a forgone conclusion that Mohenjo Daro would lose the clash, but the biggest shocker has been in the way in which it has lost. Even much smaller films like Ki and Ka, Baaghi and Udta Punjab have comfortably gone past the 50 crore mark.

In an industry that survives and benefits from perception, Rustom could be a game-changer for Akshay Kumar. It’ll change the way the trade looks at his upcoming films like ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and ‘Crack’. If those films open like Rustom has, he’ll take more credit than he otherwise would for the massive opening of ‘Robot 2.0’.

2016 has been an extraordinary year for the superstar and 2017 could be better. If he does step it up, the purple patch that he has now hit could well be bigger than what was previously though to be his career-high in the mid 2000s.

  • Akshay is trying to save his career by doing patriotic films again and again. Our fellow country men are fooled into watching his films due to their immense love for our country.

Srk has defeated akki many times — in 2004,2006,2013 … so Srk’s upcoming movie will clash with akki’s Crack …
And if Crack collects half of Srk’s the ring
In terms of worldwide collections then we will admit that akki is bigger star than Salman and Aamir !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hrithik has already crossed 240 crore and Akkians are jumping with joy once Akki’s films cross 100 crore. LOL
    Difference between megastar and star.

  • But irony is.. Akki is trying to sell patriotism through his films, but he’s not even an Indian.

    He’s a Canadian citizen.

  • Finally a good article.
I will only say it’s high time for akki to do a amir khan type movie.. high on content and high on entertainment than release it on festival.. It will give him a 200 cr movie !

Maybe thuppaki remake can be that movie…!

  • @Indicine #Sultan is Salman khan 10 th hit in the row but u havnt posted any article to that. Why ?
    Plz post it.

  • @HR even Hrithik hasn’t cross 25 on opening day as per BOI. And nobody has cross 150 cross yet without festival i guess apart from YJHD than why you expect akki 2 do it ? First let him release a movie on festival!

  • aki…is giving his best to the civilians to ignite the patriotism in them…taking so much risk…do u know guys no one in bollywood stars take risk..for india.theme films….aki ur simply awsome….

  • @hr:ya everybody knows da real collections of krish3 its just 175crs now just shut ur mouth and accept that akki has single handedly destroyed biggest epic movie as per hr fans.infact i am sure rustom will collect more than double of mj..big shame to hr and his fans.now where is hrs superstardom which cant even give face saving opening as hr came after 22 months.atleast the opening should have been excellent irrespective of the trailor n songs.hrithik can give opening only in franchise movies and that too only in holiday.on non holiday we knew his aukaat.akkis all 6 100 grossers are the movies released in non holiday period.

  • Top 5 Actors this year:
    1) Salman Khan ( No doubt about that)
    2) Aamir Khan
    3) Akshay Kumar
    4) Ajay Devgan
    5) Srk

  • Bang on people. Perception in trade travels to media through interviews and predictions and then to the audience that reads/watches about movies and box office. Perception instills the faith in a moviegoer that what he is going to spend his money on is worth it. If Akki is being talked in the trade and media as a Superstar, the traction that his movie will grow multifolds. This is why Box office numbers are important, they give a base to your claim as one of the biggest in the industrustry. If Jolly LLB opens at 17-18 I can assure you it will be a huge grosser because Subhash Kapoor is a very good director. And to follow up he has Crack and 2.0
Akki is Back, with a bang.

  • @sunny
Akshay released a lot of films on holiday still they flopped. So stop giving excuses. Akki has zero capability to cross 140 cr, with or without holiday.

  • Indicine post about Days of Tafree… Trailer realesed yesterday….

it s Remake of Gujrati movie ” Chello divas ” CE was ATBB in Gujrati cinema …

  • Rustom has done outstanding business . The kind of business which was expected from Brothers, SIB and H3 is done by Rustom and also with a clash . The Combo of Akshay and Thrillers have worked big time . It all started with S26 in 2013, Holiday in 2014, Baby in 2015 and Airlift and Rustom in 2016 . None of these movies have failed at the Box office . All these movies have been appreciated by critics and audience . In all these movies the performance of Akshay has been appreciated and all these movies have increased the credibility of Akki to an unprecedented level . 2016 has been a landmark year for Akshay after 2012 in this decade . In 2012 he was part of 1 BB and 2 Superhits and in 2016 he is part of 2 Superhits and 1 Hit . Last year all 4 movies failed to cross 100 CR and now this year the situation has changed completely . 2017 is also looking a solid year for Akshay with Jolly LLB 2, Crack and Robot 2.0 . The failure of MD will definitely affect Hrithik as he was coming back after 22 months but he will definitely bounce back in a more positive way . Cheers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Akshay has released a lot of films on festival still they flopped and his fans are crying about festivals rofl.
With or without festival, Akki will always fail to give a 150 cr grosser, forget a 244 cr grosser like Krrish 3.

Don’t compare 150 cr struggler with a 240 cr megastar.

  • I have to admit akki as an actor is brilliant
He is often underrated but he is fantastic actor. He proved it with Airlift and Rustom
He should do more intense roles and use his full potential as an actor.
Robot 2.0 will be huge for him …..!!!!!

Dedicated to @Tiger . Hope it makes u happy you Chuha !!!
