New releases are shockingly poor, Independence Day Resurgence opens well

All the new Hindi releases this week were shockingly poor. Raman Raghav 2.0 and Junooniyat have started at less than 5% occupancy for the morning shows – with reports coming in that lots of shows have been cancelled in the morning due to ‘zero’ audience.

The three other releases – Shorgull, 7 Hours To Go, A Scandall – were complete washouts.

Meanwhile, ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ has opened well. The morning shows were around the 30% mark and some shows in the noon were running at 40-45% occupancy.

When a massive Hollywood film like ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ made on a budget of $165 million (Rs 1,120 crore) is released for the same ticket price as films like Raman Raghav 2.0 – which is also targeted at the multiplex audience – from an audience point-of-view, it isn’t a very difficult decision to make.

The problem, quite clearly, is the ticket price.

If smaller Hindi films need to sustain and do well, there needs to be a change in the way tickets are priced. But the high entertainment taxes, especially in major circuits for film business, has also become a major concern.

Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi summed it up very well “2 years in a row – Big ticket Hollywood films have dominated the Hindi releases at large. Hindi film makers need to up their game & make a paradigm shift in production scale & project design to safeguard themselves for the future”

“Hollywood has decimated the regional (in the global context) cinema of a lot of countries. Thankfully, China & India still stand strong! Before we hit drastically low footfall levels, steps need to be taken by the production, distribution & exhibition sectors, working in sync!”

“A huge issue with the industry is the lack of a single association that represents ALL! Half a dozen out there, which only fight each other!”

“Infact, the uneven tax structure even within the sector hurts films! Average of 40% on cinema tickets. Almost NOTHING on the same films on TV!” Rathi said in a series of tweets.

A lot of people, including some in the trade, are dismissing the threat of Hollywood films – but with each passing week, the threat is only getting bigger. Even smaller Hollywood films are now taking bigger initials than low to medium budget Hindi films. Even critically acclaimed films are not working at the box office.

If this trend continues, a time could soon come when exhibitors will no longer be dependent on Hindi films to sustain their business. If that coincides with the decline in stardom of some of our major superstars, who have been the pillars of the industry for more than 2 decades, the Hindi film industry could struggle for its very existence.

  • This is exactly the problem with our audience – They tell “Nawaz this.. Nawaz that..” but won’t end up watching his solo movies in cinema… The same Nawaz comes in a pathetic movie like Kick.. It becomes a blockbuster..sad state of affairs..

  • well written….we should now take big risks and make big turns.
    @Indicine
why Mirziya trailer was released so so early??
When Sultan next song is coming??

  • Ur point is correct it’s the prices only.
We have cheaper tickets on Thursday and when I go that day it’s almost houseful and rest of days it’s not good. Prices can only increase footfalls. Only Salman Bhai fans are Rich enough to spend 1000-2000 on tickets first day when it’s most expensive. I salute their loyalty.
    So there are two solutions
    1) reduce price of tickets
    2)cast Salman in all films

  • Please guys stay away from crap film Raman Raghav, this is an absolute joke of a film and to think that Cencor Board allowed this film to be released is beyond me.

  • Rubbish article. Disappointed With u. Bollywood has scored 1050cr in 1st half while holly is just at 430cr. Bolly will finish at 3000cr whl holly at max 600cr. I agree v need to up our game as for past 18 months v r under performing but still the situation is fair and things will b sorted out soon. This year began on a high with 3 superhits in 1st quarter bt the mediocre 2nd quarter has made it just abv avg 2016 so far. I m sure 2nd half willb brilliant. V will definitely cross 3000cr mark which will b a fantastic achievement

  • IF 8Cr population each Telugu&Tamil industries r producing 100-350Cr films why bollywood with 80Cr population afraid to take risks and making same old boring and mediocre movies.Their only asset is media propaganda 24/8.

People lost trust on Hindi industry.

btw All industries r suffering from hollywood still Tamil&Telugu thriving, Hindi not.

  • I think the following para of Indicine’s article sums up the issue really well :

    Quote

    Unquote

There are people who would want to watch RR2 (which also includes me) but honestly I feel that such people will be in minority. Majority would opt for Independence Day if the ticket prices are same for both.

It is not that the bollywood industry is heading towards doom. The big movies will still continue to dominate which bring in the maximum moolah. Enough for the industry to prosper. But a large majority (easily 75% plus) of small niche movies like TE3N, Raman Raghav 2, Waiting etc will continue to be hit by big hollywood movies.

  • Frankly, I had expected this. There was absolutely no buzz around junooniyat, none at all.As far as Raman Raghav 2.0 is concerned, I’ve always maintained that Nawaz is a brilliant actor, but he doesn’t have it in him to bring in the crowds. To add to that, it is an Anurag Kashyap film, and his films appeal to a very small section of the audiences. Independence day had some good promos, and the first part was a Blockbuster anyways,so this is expected. If we compare Hollywood’s influence in Indian theatricals in the 1990’s and now,we need to realize that Both Hollywood and Bollywood have a market. Now,will we see such a crowd coming for a Hollywood film like sense and sensibility or pride and prejudice? We won’t, because they won’t work here. There are some Hollywood films which work here, and they are of these types-Franchise films, superhero flicks, big budget vfx induced films like Independence day,and to some extent, films which have a bit of Bollywood or Indian touch in them and films having popular animated characters.Otherwise, their normal films don’t really catch on here.So let’s just calm down.Agreed,Bollywood needs an upgrade, but let’s not compare ourselves with Hollywood for improvement, let’s compare us with ourselves.Only then will we improve with time.
-From a loyal Bollywood fan,who watches and likes Hollywood movies as well!

  • Hollywood is the clear winner.not only because of having sky level production and story but also they knew Indian audience’s taste.

Curse of FAN now realised heavily.airlift is the only movie which able to trend a little better, rest all are very small successes.

Do Indian audience have even a little faith in complete offbeat movies?no,then why they’re making such movies.

Jungle book was only the trailer, just think what’ll happen when Avatar-!! Will release.

It’s just started to happen.now this year onwards hollywood will definitely dominate the whole growing multiplexes of India,if I’m not wrong even in small towns too,3 D single screens have made and regularly Holly movies are releasinv even in my own home town.

The major TRUTH that lies in the line between HOLLYWOOD AND BOLLYWOOD IS

HOLLYWOOD—-will dominate the whole country irrespective of on any non holiday it’ll release.

While Bollywood—-the condition is severe,it completely depends on REPUBLIC DAY +POST-IPL+EID+INDEPENDENCE DAY+GANDHI JAYANTI+DEEWALI+CHRISTMAS.t his is the sole reason of Bollywood’s existence.

an irony is even big stars also releasing on the same date.so in no way BOLLYWOOD can ever even defend and come closer to hollywood.

Now HOLLYWOOD’S journey started.it is constantly growing ahead.and from next year/after few year it’ll dominate Bollywood ,if Bollywood director will not take strong steps and risk to entertain audience with out thinking about the result and have to rise their production value should have upgraded to huge to kill the limited appeal.

And this is not so easy.as directors will not come out from their co.fort zone, same movies will be repeated an fill be killed continuously.

And Indian cinema will constantly will move towards the darker side.and today’s time good movies from Bollywood is just happening incidentally rather most of the time in a year.

So expecting from Indian filmmakers this ,just a waste of thinking, which is quite impossible too.so the only way remained is Indian people have change their mind of respecting good offbeat movies,if they couldn’t sorry to say Bollywood will surely very soon is going to completely dominated by Hollywood, that’s it.

Even being a cinema lover, till now I myself already watched 10+ hollywood movies and only 4 MOVIES—-FAN,neerja,airlift watched at theatre.rejected big movies like houseful3 and will reject sultan too because of the gunday legend-non actor combined jodi.while before some years I used to watch Bollywood movies more compared to hollywood.and booked my next ticket for Independence day:resurgence, this weekend.

And the rest BOLLY movies that I awaited this year—-Mahenjodaro,DEAR ZINDAGI,Dangal if I get time.rest are not sure though.

  • Why r u using words like we and them..??
There is no we or them…
There are only single unrelated movies..
If one Sultan does well, that doesn’t mean SRK will be happy and say good year for bollywood
if one jungle book did well, it doesn’t mean that all hollywood movies will be that good

  • I lost all interest from Independence Day 2 when they announced that Will Smith will not be part of it,the only film that i may watch on Sunday is Junooniyat.

  • On the other hand, regional cinemas are given tax exemption and now they are also making their presence felt. That’s a good thing but it will also affect the low budget Hindi movies, as people can watch good movies at lower costs.

Bollywood movies cost as much as Hollywood movies. So why won’t people watch movies which can be enjoyed best in theatres, which have high production values. They can watch Bollywood movies later on T.V. also.

So basically, Bollywood ki haalat Middle Class jaisi hone waali hai.

  • Am really dissapointed with Nawaz for doing a pathetic, crap and dirty film like Raman Raghav, this film is absolutely disgusting, the theme of this film is very shamefull.

  • If avatar 2 gets a holiday release then day 1 will be 30+ which is only possible for 2/3 actors

  • Bollywood fail in box office is not because hollywood .bollywood Aur hum indian audience iski wajah hai.hum sabne hamesha stardom ko bhadava diya. Sharukh, salman, amir bas inki filme blockbuster honi chahiye baki kitni bhi achhi filme banaye wo bhad me jaye. Bollowood ki Creativity matlab Kisi hollywood ya south film ki copy.ab indian audience badal chuki hai. Hume stardom nahi quality chahiye. Aur wo sirf hollywood deta hai.agar hum 250rs ki ticket kharidte hai to waise film bhi chahiye to wo filme hoti hai hollywood.no song, no pramotion only creativity ke dumpe hollywood indian box office pe hollywood ke naye rule kayam kar raha hai.
Welcome hollywood take over this nonsense bollywood.

  • @Iambollywoodfan,I didn’t get your logic.even if an ali abbas directed crap sultan will do good at box office, then what’s the need of KING KHAN to say Bollywood has a year?can’t the people feel who watched it?

And kindly here also you can’t digest the food with out taking KING KHAN’S NAME.and why you’re expecting a bb kind of movie from sultan?please change your name to @iamsalmanfan,as masala genre habituated watchers like you never watched movies like MNIK,FAN which comes once in a decade, and watches dabang, ready to kick, prdp like craps and HATES BEST ACTORS being a non actor’s fan.now who have to feel shame kindly you decide.

  • It is saddened that the industry is not able to produce bankable stars. In 90’s Khans entered into the industry giving HGOTY & blockbusters and established themselves bigger than Anil, Gobinda, Sunny, Amitji, Sanjay, Jackie etc within 2-3 years. In between Ajay & Akshay also debuted. Since then the whole industry depedepend upon tthem.

  • ticket price needs to be readjusted for small films so that they can survive the wrath of big budget hollywood biggies

  • audience became smart now-a-days ,they knew there is no difference in watching a movie like raman raghav or junoniat in big screen or laptop
but a movie like independence day deserves to be watch in big screen

  • This is not a problem for Hindi Film Industry.

Problem is that we have only five superstars but among them Aamir and Hrithik make less films with huge gap. Srk is a flopstar and his films are not working at box-office.

Now we have three superstars left Salman, Akshay and Ajay who are making films for producer, distributors and exhibitors.

So we need more than ten superstars for our industry to make money from cinema.

    Upcoming superstars
    1. Ranbir
    2. Tiger
    3. Arjun
    4. Ranveer may be
    5. …….

Blockbuster STAR is coming on Eid with Blockbuster Sultan

  • @sadistSSS

Dnt lie!most of the kingkongz fans didnt
watchd artificial actorz xhaust fan @theatres….thats the reasn for such a low lifetime total.. after all she is duniye ke sabse superstar

  • If Bollywood continues to make films like sultan, kick, bodyguard, dabangg, house full, and other mindless masala movies it will be the end of the road ,the highest grosser so far this year is jungle book,it never happened before that a Hollywood film is the biggest grosser, need of the hour is to focus in quality, content and scale rather than stars

  • Don’t worry we have Salman to save Hindi Film Industry

SULTAN is coming to save Hindi Film Industry by crossing 200cr in just 10to12 days.

But we don’t need SRK a flopstar who is giving craps films from more than five years.

  • @tiger 6:15 u ignored hritik he had given more than ajay and akshay
b/w 2000-2010 he has the highest no. of hgoty along with srk
