Top Actors in Bollywood – September 2013

List by film critic and trade analyst Joginder Tuteja

Continuing our two-monthly feature, here is the updated list of Top 5 Actors in Bollywood

  • This list would be based on the approximate box office outcome (Nett collections) of their last five movies
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration
  • Dated movies won’t be taken under consideration
  • Only domestic box office performance is being taken into account

Top Actors In Bollywood

Salman Khan Actor

Salman Khan – Dabangg 2 (160 cr), Ek Tha Tiger (199 cr), Bodyguard (141 cr), Ready (121 cr), Dabangg (141 cr)
Salman Khan Total Movie Collections: 762 crore (Average per film: 152.4 cr)

Despite having no release in the year gone by, Salman Khan still stays on the top. Reason being that the sum total of collections generated from his last five films has not yet been surpassed by any other superstar.

This would stay on till year end too since 762 cr is a huge number to be surpassed. Moreover with Mental / Azaad coming in the month of January next year, expect the gap to be further widened.

Shahrukh Khan Actor

Shahrukh Khan – Chennai Express (227 crore), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (122 cr), Don 2 (106 cr), Ra. One (115 cr), My Name Is Khan (73 cr)
Shahrukh Khan Total Movie Collections: 641 crore (Average per film: 128.2 cr)

With ‘Chennai Express’ turning out to be an enormous blockbuster, Shahrukh has narrowed the gap between him and Salman to a good extent. Still, there is a shortfall of over 100 crore.

Considering the fact that Shahrukh would have lesser number of releases in months to come (as of now he is only doing ‘Happy New Year’), it would be some time before he takes a big shot at the Numero Uno spot. Still, the gap between him and the number three in the list is pretty big.

Ranbir Kapoor Actor

Ranbir Kapoor – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (190 cr – Expected), Barfi! (110 cr), Rockstar (68 cr), Anjaana Anjaani (40 cr), Raajneeti (93 cr)
Ranbir Kapoor Total Movie Collections: 501 cr (Average per film: 100.2 cr)

Courtesy his largely consistent run over the years, Ranbir Kapoor stays on to his Number 3 spot. However he can’t afford to take it easy since his he would need to demonstrate this in months to come as well, what with ‘Besharam’ arriving next. If Ranbir has to beat Shahrukh for the second spot, Besharam would have to collect Rs 233 crore at the domestic box office! Think it is possible?

Aamir Khan Actor

Aamir Khan – Talaash (90 cr), Dhobi Ghat (14 cr), 3 Idiots (202 cr), Ghajini (115 cr), Taare Zameen Par (63 cr)
Aamir Khan Total Movie Collections: 484 cr (Average per film: 96.8 cr)

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan is now ready with his next biggie ‘Dhoom 3’. While it is a given that the film will be huge, ‘how huge’ is what would make Aamir rush past the Number 3 spot and possibly go even higher.

Both from collections as well as average perspective, Aamir is quite close to Ranbir which means ‘Besharam’ vs ‘Dhoom 3’ battle holds all the more significance. For example, if Besharam collects around 140 crore at the box office, then Dhoom 3 would have to collect just 127 crore for Aamir to go past Ranbir and take the No 3 spot. Aamir also has a chance to go past Shahrukh Khan. For that to happen, Dhoom 3 needs to collect Rs 221 crore or more at the box office. Doing so will also give Aamir a great chance of ending the year with the highest grosser! The top spot looks way beyond reach, as D3 has to collect 341 crore for Aamir to go past Salman – which just goes to show how incredibly consistent Salman has been over the last 3 years or so.

Akshay Kumar Actor

Akshay Kumar – Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (63 cr), Special 26 (70 cr), Khiladi 786 (71 cr), Rowdy Rathore (133 cr), Joker (35 cr)
Akshay Kumar Total Movie Collections: 372 cr (Average per film: 74.4 cr)

Big money was put on ‘Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara’ and despite the film not doing well, Akshay has moved on fast. Fortunately for him, none of the other actors (who are below him in the box office ranking) could score a biggie in the last two months due to which there was no threat whatsoever.

With ‘Boss’ round the corner, he could well be assured of a comfortable position in the Top-5 for some more time to come. However Hrithik Roshan is pretty much arriving full throttle with ‘Krrish 3’, hence narrowing the gap with Akshay as far as collections earned in last five films is concerned.

If Akshay has to go past Aamir to take the 4th spot, Boss would have to collect 148 crore or more.

The ones who can break into Top-5 in months to come:

  • Hrithik Roshan – (Agneepath (120 cr), Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara (90 cr), Guzaarish (30 cr), Kites (49 cr), Jodhaa Akbar (63 cr) [Forthcoming film: Krrish 3] – Total: 352 cr (Average per film: 70.4 cr)
  • John Abraham – (Madras Café (45 cr), Shootout at Wadala (62 cr), I, Me aur Main (9 cr), Race 2 (102 cr), Housefull 2 (114 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Welcome Back] – Total: 332 cr (Average per film: 66.4 cr)
  • Ajay Devgn – (Satyagraha (65 cr – Expected), Himmatwala (45 cr), Son of Sardaar (102 cr), Bol Bachchan (101 cr), Tezz (17 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Action Jackson] – Total: 330 cr (Average per film: 66 cr)
  • Saif Ali Khan – (Race 2 (102 cr), Cocktail (76 cr), Agent Vinod (45 cr), Aarakshan (42 cr), Kurbaan (24 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Bullett Raja] – Total: 289 cr (Average per film: 57.8 cr)

  • Ranbir is at 3rd? ?
    Akki is at 5th? ?
    What the hell here! !
When it comes to quality, then hro and amir are best.but if we consider worldwide stardom+quality, then list has to be

  • Akshay will be no 1 after thuppakki. I assure everyone thuppakki and gabbar and gutka will be bbs. Not sure about boss and its entertainment.

  • Quality term is subjective. And as the definition of TQM is, “Quality is something which is perceived by Customers as valued add” and so when we meet their specification, they will buy it.

With due respect to other actors, Salman is currently delivering those products, which customers [audience] is appreciating and making them blockbusters.

  • Salman khan is number 1 from few years now and will remain number 1 for next few year bcoz nobody else can give back to back blockbusters.

  • So Aamir khan will never make it on top or second position bcoz of “Dhobi ghat”.Next year his last 5 movies will be “PK”,”Dhoom 3″,”Talaash”,”Dhobi ghat” and “3 idiots” but still Srk will be above him bcoz he has done just a guest appeareance in “Billu” which was very long along with some songs which got millions of views online also he was producer of that movie but it was not his movie. It was Irfan khan’s movie.

  • @sachin11 Billu is Irfan Khan’s movie…..have you seen that movie???….Irfan Khan playing the role of BILLU.. SRK is playing as himself as a superstar in a cameo apperanceeven though his name is given as Sahir Khan… in that case salman’s movies like heroes, hello etc should be included

  • I dont believe this. The actors actual status should be given by considering the worldwide collections And not just india collections. This is fair comparison. If u do this you will realizehow big Shahrukh khan is!!!!

  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan – 122cr with full competition
Ready – 121cr solo release with open weeks

Just imagine if Jab Tak Hai Jaan would release solo and got open weeks then what should be the lifetime collection.

    SRK As Powerful As Ever

  • Akshay doens’t deserve to be in Top 5 because he does 4-5 movies per year and nowadays ticket prices are much higher and no of screens are also very large… so its not very tough 2 collect 70-75 crore for a big star movie… But Hrithik and Aamir deliver one movie per year so their last 5 movies include movies from year 2008 and 2009…

During that time ticket prices and screens were low.. so its unfair to do comparisons on basis of last 5 movies..

  • @everyone, overseas collections hasn’t been taken into consideration because there is no accurate source for total overseas business. Many screens aren’t even reported. Also, in the overseas markets, films release in phases. 3 Idiots, which released in India way back in 2009, released in Japan earlier this year.

  • Ranbir in top3 and Akshay in top5 are the biggest jokes ever! !doing 4- 5 crap movies is not a sign of super stardom.

  • Only Dabangg is best movie of salman
Ek tha tiger and Dabangg2 is rubbish
And Ready with Bodyguard copy of south films
So called salman is worst actor of bollywood

  • salman khan.. wow! no releases this year n still no.1.. no one is even close to him.. now thats wat u call a “megastar”..
