Top Actors in Bollywood: January 2014

A lot has changed since the last Top 5 actors list that we published in September 2013. Quite a few big films like Besharam, Boss, Ram Leela, R.. Rajkumar and of course the two blockbusters Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 released in the last 3 months of the year. The failure of Besharam has pushed Ranbir, who was previously in the Top 3, lower down the list. Akshay Kumar is out of the Top 5, as BOSS under-performed at the box office.

  • This list would be based on the approximate box office outcome (Nett collections) of their last five movies
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration
  • Dated movies won’t be taken under consideration
  • Only domestic box office performance is being taken into account

Top Actors In Bollywood

Salman Khan Actor

Salman Khan – Dabangg 2 (160 cr), Ek Tha Tiger (199 cr), Bodyguard (141 cr), Ready (121 cr), Dabangg (141 cr)
Salman Khan Total Movie Collections: 762 crore (Average per film: 152.4 cr)

1. Salman hasn’t had a release in 2013, but no other ‘superstar’ has managed to come close, even though Aamir now has two 200 crore grossers! That pretty much sums up how consistent Salman has been in the last 3 years or so — 5 back-to-back record-breaking blockbusters in a row, with the total collections of his last 5 movies adding up to a mind-boggling figure of Rs 762 crore.

His first film in more than a year, Jai Ho, releases this month. And unless it fails miserably and collects less than 70 crore, Salman will continue to be the top star at the domestic box office.

He also has the keenly awaited Eid release ‘Kick’ which is expected to challenge the records set by Dhoom 3.

Aamir Khan Actor

Aamir Khan – Dhoom 3 (270 cr – expected from Hindi), Talaash (90 cr), Dhobi Ghat (14 cr), 3 Idiots (202 cr), Ghajini (115 cr)
Aamir Khan Total Movie Collections: 691 cr (Average per film: 138.2 cr)

2. Dhoom 3, which is now the highest grosser of all time, has taken Aamir Khan to the second spot. Not only has the actor overtaken Shahrukh Khan at the domestic box office, but has also challenged his supremacy in the overseas markets.

His upcoming release – Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K is expected to be yet another sure-shot 200 crore grosser – and if it does, it could well be yet another mega battle between the three Khans for the top spot in 2014.

Shahrukh Khan Actor

Shahrukh Khan – Chennai Express (227 crore), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (122 cr), Don 2 (106 cr), Ra. One (115 cr), My Name Is Khan (73 cr)
Shahrukh Khan Total Movie Collections: 641 crore (Average per film: 128.2 cr)

3. The super-success of Chennai Express took Shahrukh Khan to the second spot, but with Dhoom 3 breaking all records, SRK has dropped down the list. The superstar has ‘Happy New Year’ releasing this Diwali and Maneesh Sharma’s FAN that is expected to release in December this year. It’ll be interesting to see if the two films can take SRK to the top spot.

Akshay Kumar Actor

Hrithik Roshan – Krrish 3 (233 cr), Agneepath (120 cr), Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara (90 cr), Guzaarish (30 cr), Kites (49 cr)
Hrithik Roshan Total Movie Collections: 522 cr (Average per film: 104.4 cr)

4. For the first time since we started ranking the actors, Hrithik Roshan makes it to the Top 5 with the Hindi version of Krrish 3 collecting Rs 233 crore at the domestic box office.

Hrithik has an out-an-out commercial film Bang Bang, also starring Katrina Kaif, lined up for release this year. While he’s unlikely to challenge the Khans, he could get pretty close to the Top 3 by the end of the year.

Since Bang Bang is expected to release before Happy New Year, the film would need to collect Rs 169 crore or more for Hrithik to beat SRK and take the 3rd spot.

Ranbir Kapoor Actor

Ranbir Kapoor – Besharam (59 cr), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (189 cr), Barfi! (110 cr), Rockstar (68 cr), Anjaana Anjaani (40 cr)
Ranbir Kapoor Total Movie Collections: 466 cr (Average per film: 93.2 cr)

5. Besharam was expected to take a good start at the box office and it did, what with the film collecting close to Rs 20 crore on its opening day. But the response was so bad that the film ended with lifetime business of less than 60 crore. It was arguably the worst received biggie of the year, as even a film like Himmatwala held up better over the weekend.

Ranbir has two releases this year – Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos and Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, which is scheduled to release during Christmas 2014. It could well be a battle between him and Akshay Kumar for the 5th spot this year, as the latter has A.R. Murugadoss’ Holiday releasing in the first half of 2014.

Actors who can break into the Top 5 in the next few months

  • Akshay Kumar – Boss (59 cr), Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (63 cr), Special 26 (70 cr), Khiladi 786 (71 cr), Rowdy Rathore (133 cr). [Fortchoming film: Holiday] – Total: 396 cr (Average per film: 79.2 cr)
  • John Abraham – (Madras Café (45 cr), Shootout at Wadala (62 cr), I, Me aur Main (9 cr), Race 2 (102 cr), Housefull 2 (114 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Welcome Back] – Total: 332 cr (Average per film: 66.4 cr)
  • Ajay Devgn – (Satyagraha (63 cr), Himmatwala (45 cr), Son of Sardaar (102 cr), Bol Bachchan (101 cr), Tezz (17 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Action Jackson] – Total: 328 cr (Average per film: 65.6 cr)
  • Saif Ali Khan – Bullet Raja (36 cr), Race 2 (102 cr), Cocktail (76 cr), Agent Vinod (45 cr), Aarakshan (42 cr) [Forthcoming film: Happy Ending / Humshakals] – Total: 301 cr (Average per film: 60.2 cr)
  • The average collections of Shahid Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi and Imran Khan is way too low at this stage. But Shahid’s last release R.. Rajkumar did very well at the box office, so he too, along with Emraan (who is going through a career low), could make it to the Top 5 in the next few years.

    Top 5 grossers: 1. #Dhoom3, 2. #Krrish3, 3. #ChennaiExpress, 4. #3Idiots, 5. #EkThaTiger. All nett figures. India biz only.

  • @sss : Stop crying like a baby n accept today’s truth. Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna n Big B are more successful than srk if you take their filmography n compare number of hits. Can you accept the collection of 15 crores (Sholay) with 227 crores (CE) ? Stop hypocrisy n accept that its Aamir n Salman who are ruling since 2009. Srk still in top 3 but failed to beat AK n SK in last 5 years.

  • Without a release still on no.1 speaks volume of popularity Salman has. This is definitely a popularity basis analysis n not acting wise. It will be Irfaan Khan, Manoj Bajpai n Naseeruddin Shah if we have to rank only on basis of acting. Aamir n Hrithik are gem, Salman is entertainer n Srk is overacting shop !!!!!

  • @Aeeyy, that was a nice post, which clarifies that stardom is not always connected to acting abilities.

That’s not the case with India, but in Hollywood, and every other country and region, the guy/girl the people seem more attracted to becomes star, while there are people who can brilliantly emote, but people are just not attracted to them and thus have less following.

Most of the hatred spread on this site whenever a list that shows Salman being numero uno is because of the misunderstanding, or deliberately not understanding the difference between a superstar and a superactor.

if we check out the acting abilities, i guess none of the top 10 stars of Hindi cinema can match Irfan Khan on acting abilities, but still those top 10 stars are loved more by the people.

a guy/girl may act fantastically, but there is something called connecting with the mass majority of people, and that is what stars achieve with just a few simple expression of theirs.

while, great actors have endless expressions to match any character, yet they just don’t connect with the masses.

  • @Aks -- Sure, Hrithik is yet to do an all out comedy film, which I would definitely love to see, but his character in KMG and Lakshya had some comedy as well, and I think he played his characters quite well judging by the response he got from the critics and audience for those characters.
So, just because he hasn’t done an all out comedy film, despite of doing all other possible genres, I wouldn’t underrate his acting skills.

Btw, Ranbir is also yet to do any thriller, superhero, negative, action roles/genres. And those genres are some of the most popular ones like thriller, action and negative today.

  • @navin thanx dear its request of Srk fans to give worldwide list to indicine, i had searched and i also quite surprised that after including Dhobi Ghat still Aamir will come out at top, never the less its quite obvious for me that Srk would stand at top 2 and he was on 2nd but i am happy with Salman that he is not too behind in worldwide gross despite of not so popular in overseas compare to Aamir and Srk

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0
  • @rohit its true but comedy in kmg was due to his character demand it is same as Samar character of Aamir in D3 and Srk’s in MNik its because of their disabilities who create funny situation and Hr is ahead in Biopic roles but Ranbir shown his class in Barfi as being mute he did fantastic work he makes you laugh and also slightly feel you sad with his remarkable performance and that also without speaking a word other than ‘Barfi’ and Ranbir has 6 year career while Hr has 13 year so in 6 year we can’t expect from him to touch each zoner and its all which i noticed and the list is definitely different for each individual.

  • @aks has Aamir done any role like Darr, Bazigar, Kal ho na ho, Devdas, MNIK, JTHJ? Aamir has done negative with Fanaa and Dhoom 3 but not close to Baazigar and Darr…. in romantic roles SRK always is way ahead…. Sahir is like Rizwaan, Radhe, Barfi, Rohit.. in thriller you find neck to neck with ghajini & don…. comedy Roles then AA and CE…sarfarosh, rdb then you get cdi… bhuvan & rencho amir may go ahead but not so far u may not agree but not so challengable…srk at bottom only shows your favouritism…. Hrithik’s best performances in Krrish, Dhoom 2, Lakshya and Ranbir’s best performances are rockstar and barfi… Ajay devgan’s dilwale, diwangi, company, zakhm, golmaal series, gangajal, OUATIM…. RK and HR have a lot to prove yet to go ahead then srk as u saw them ahead…

  • @haters,why I’m against aamir you didn’t get it,right.every star’s fan is against SRK.and his movies always face clashes, this shows who is real winner.this time he will prove why he is called THE KING OF BOLLYWOOD,just wait haters for 23rd october.

  • @Aks agree with you on that, Ranbir is a fantastic actor. His comic timing was brilliant in Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani. I was totally surprised after watching it.

Acting wise he nailed it with Rocket Singh with controlled performance, that reminds of the parallel movie era of Amol Palekar.

Though I found the movie Wake Up Sid a bit average, the way Ranbir stuck to the character was brilliant. Not for once in the movie he went astray from the characteristic of the role.

He again played the cold, calculated role in Rajneeti to perfection.

I guess in a few years he would grow up to be a great actor.

He also made mistakes in his choices, but that’s part and parcel of the journey to stardom.

However, I have not seen his Besharam, and why it flopped? so would reserve my opinion on it.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
  • @Aks -- Well don’t you find any contradiction in “comedy in kmg was due to his character demand it is same as Samar character of Aamir in D3 and Srk’s in MNik its because of their disabilities who create funny situation” and “but Ranbir shown his class in Barfi as being mute he did fantastic work he makes you laugh and also slightly feel you sad with his remarkable performance and that also without speaking a word other than ‘Barfi’”?

As far as I can remember Barfi also had many situational comedies, in my way of thinking, you can’t make anyone laugh in the movie without the help of director and dialogue writers who create and write funny scenes and dialogues. I have also seen Besharam, but I didn’t find Ranbir’s comedy good at all unlike APKGK, difference? Later was better directed and was well made unlike former.
Another way to judge it, is the sense of humor of people, who could make you laugh anywhere outside the movies, but it doesn’t have much importance in the movies.

Furthermore, I have seen many people doing similar role which Ranbir played in Barfi in India and abroad, who did equally well work. But, some of the roles played by Hrithik, haven’t been played by many people, that doesn’t make Ranbir less talented by any means, he’s certainly of the best in list of current stars. And yeah, experience factor is also there, Ranbir has more time to prove him further.

The way I see it, its the versatility along with your work, which makes you a great actor. And not many people can match Hrithik versatility. But as you wrote, “the list is definitely different for each individual.”.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1
  • @rohit the barfi example i put in only the same case you mention for kmg for hr, since his debut Ranbir performance is eventually better with every movie barring exception of Besharam, but in that movie i liked Ranbir and Besharam was not a bad movie,it was a watchable movie for me,Hr is no doubt a fantastic actor but there are movies of him when his performance were below avg for me. For you he is most versatile but its not in my case. @yash there is no doubt the performance you talking about Srk characters was great performances but it doesn’t mean only with that movies i ranked him in my list,Srk performance of Mnik was great for you but its good for me.since Cdi i liked srk only in Rbndj till ce none of his performance of him is even good for me not even Don2, an actor likis one who atleast look out at his best whatever the faith of the movie. I don’t find Srk acting at his best which were at the time till Rab ne,its my opinion which i found, your may be differ and why need of argue as that was my list.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 3
  • @sem superb work and good research of data of three khans, keep it up.i liked your list and the points you mentioned at last.

Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0
  • @jc absolutely right,i suggest you to watch Besharam with minimal expectation, movie is bit entertaining for me but Ranbir was superb,so you will not be disappointed atleast from Ranbir performance.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1
  • @Aks -- Even Aamir’s performances were not well in some of his earlier films in my opinion. You must be talking about Hrithik’s flops during 2002-03, he had signed those films before his debut, and he didn’t reject those big banners at that time. Despite of his films, his performances were praised. Apart from those films, he has never received negative response, same with Aamir since 2001.
Ranbir has no doubt got better till Barfi, but he was not good in Besharam and was average to good in YJHD, just my opinion and of course everyone has a different opinion.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
  • @ aks these r the performance which makes srk ahead among them and its not arguig or somothing as its your list… its only like let take boxoffice numbers amir is ahead of srk or behind salman with 2 major hits like D3 & 3I…
