Akshay Kumar’s Special 26 has collected Rs 23-24 crores at the domestic box office in it’s first weekend. For a movie that opened to a lukewarm response on Friday, the film managed to put up good numbers on Saturday and Sunday.
Business was best at big city multiplexes, while single screens (were the film released on limited screens) were poor. From here on, the Neeraj Pandey directed heist drama will rely entirely on it’s multiplex business. The film needs to collect 70 crore+ for ‘Hit’ status, which means it has to triple it’s first weekend business to be a clean success. Weekdays will be crucial.
Special Chabbis would have probably managed to put up better numbers over the weekend, possibly a 28-30 crore weekend, if the clash with Prabhu Deva’s ABCD was avoided. Especially in Mumbai, Mysore and Nizam/Andhra circuits, where ABCD was running to near capacity at multiplexes on Sunday.

Swades was a flop in India and declared semi-hit overseas.
Get your facts right before talking. Don’t be blind enough with love for your start that you make a fool of yourself.
People who say that Special 26 should not have taken Akshay should also then talk that Swades director should not have taken SRK.
In fact Special 26 was less promoted than Swades was and comparatively it is doing better.
Yes, SRK had overseas followers hence the film recovered a bit.
I personally appreciate SRK and Akshay, and even Salman (Khamoshi) for doing off beat films.
All stars are approached by directors for offbeat film, and all stars would like to take a different role. They are just thrilled to do different things, and if they fail, atleast they tried.
Look at the art movie specialist like Shabana Azmi, Naseer, Om Puri etc., they have all done commercial movie and they have not been as successful in mainstream commercial than in parallel art kinda movies.
So, do they deserved to be insulted too?
Cinema is entertainment and an art, and different genre movies are liked by people with different tastes.
So, instead of insulting any genre (Action, romance, family etc.,) that you don’t like and see, why not put comments on movie that you see and regarding its performance.
I don’t like romantic movies much, so i don’t watch it in theatres, and hence i don’t comment on it. Hence i never commented on JTHJ, however good or bad it may have been.
