The side effect of Bahubali 2: The Conclusion

‘Bahubali 2: The Conclusion’ is a once-in-a-lifetime film. A box office phenomenon like the S.S. Rajamouli film happens only once in a decade or two. The last time a film pushed the level of film business to an altogether different level was Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ and before that we’d probably have to go back as far as Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’.

But a box office storm like ‘Bahubali 2’, a film that has shattered records across the country, has both advantages and disadvantages.

The first negative side effect of ‘Bahubali 2’ is going to be immediate rush to make the next ‘Bahubali’.

Less than 2 weeks after the release of ‘Bahubali 2’, we’ve had 3 major announcements:

  • A UAE businessman wants to invest Rs 1,000 crore to make the epic Mahabharata (narrated from Bhima’s perspective). He has reportedly signed Malayalam superstar Mohanlal to play Bhima and is keen on casting Hrithik Roshan as Krishna.
  • Telugu producer Allu Aravind is joining hands with ‘Ghajini’ producer Madhu Mantena and Namit Malhotra (Prime Focus Limited) to make the epic ‘Ramayana’ in 3 different languages. The planned investment on the 3-part series is said to be Rs 500 crore.
  • Ritesh Deshmukh is reportedly also planning a 225-crore film on telling the fascinating story of warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

It’s good for film business in India as a whole that we attempting to make big films that bring together the audience from various film industries. After all, the combined footfalls of the two ‘Bahubali’ films just in the two home states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will exceed the 7-crore mark – which goes to show the immense potential for film business in India.

But the industry needs to very careful here.

The ‘Bahubali’ series is a unique case of brilliant marketing (almost entirely organic) backed with outstanding content and a convincing storyline. It was helmed by one of the best filmmakers the country has ever produced. S.S. Rajamouli is a visionary who gained tremendous confidence after making classics like ‘Magadheera’ and ‘Eega’. His track-record is only matched by directors like Rajkumar Hirani and Shankar. He is the very best, amongst the best.

In Hindi, the only director who is capable enough of making films on such a large canvas is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He is one director who has sense for scale.

With lesser directors and writers, we could be risking a film similar to ‘Mohenjo Daro’. The director was no less than Ashutosh Gowariker, acclaimed for films like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Swades’. He compromised on visual effects, slipped in the writing department and a large share of its budget went into the pockets of the lead superstar. The results were disastrous, the film faced outright rejection because the promos and characters weren’t appealing at all. Even a superstar couldn’t save it.

The rush to make the next ‘Bahubali’ could result in the industry losing a lot of money and unless a film gets almost everything right and more – we are unlikely to have another film like ‘Bahubali’ for a long time to come.

  • @ Just Ketch u don’t know background our Maharashtrian Ritesh Deshmukh ,he is most richest actor . He can buy all Bollywood actor u don’t know power him . Woh puri Bollywood industry kharid sakta hai .

  • #Baahubali2 Hindi(376.75) surpassed #Dangal Hindi(375) India Net. #Dangal all lang combined India net(387.37) by today .

  • @Indicine,

Why don’t you check the facts before publishing something…

In the case of ‘Randaamoozham’ the book was published in 1984 and so many directors including the acclaimed Priyadarshan was behind M.T Vasudevan Nair (the author) to write the screen play for the book to make it into a movie. But MT didn’t want to compromise on the scale of the film and wanted the movie to be shot in a way that would do justice to the book.

Finally the renowned Ad film maker Sreekumar Menon bought the rights and MT wrote the screenplay for him. UAE billionnaire Dr. BR Shetty got the novel from Sreekumar and after reading it he said he wanted to make the movie. The also read the screenplay and he told that he is ready to invest even 1000cr for this magnum opus (not exactly 1000cr as the medias are saying).

This is not something that suddenly came up due to Bahubali…it was in the pipeline for a long time but now only they got a producer in that scale. Thats all. And the casting thing and all…it was said by the director, it was only his wish he said….it was not told by the producer.

  • I think mahabharata[Randamoozham] is not at all a side effect of Bahubali2. the makers of randamoozham decided to transform author MTs story to celluloid that way back year2009. Both Our Indias Legendary actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal read the script and decided to make a film on randamoozham way back a decade ago. that time they decided for a 60cr budget and after some year they planned a260cr budget and delayed further and again year2014 they planned a 600cr for Randamoozham. Then here comes year 2017 again makers announced 1000cr for Randamoozham. i hope this time they make a film based on Randamoozham. the film will be beautiful for sure because it is not a normal mahabharata which we know fro childhood. MT is a master with pen and this time he is telling mahabharata in Bhima point of view.i am super xcited for #Mahabharata[randamoozham].

  • Jus look at @Incidine still hav’nt posted the collections of Bahubali2.bahubali2 iz going to brk dangal collections today n so Incidine is not posting it n tryin to promote tingu in China

  • Indicine we visited 10 threates in interior of Maharashtra and MP for Baahubali as of yesterday all single screens all housefull with no empty seats in theatre. This was weekday evening show. Such is the craze. Cinetrak should start doing same thing for accurate survey. Mass tickets can be bought through grewal anywhere in the world but what is authencity of occupation ratio in China? Baahubali is ahead because of strength of Indian collections and there are several efforts to create hype about new market in Beijing (when actually there is none), better deals for future movies for Indian producers (and next 10 Indian release will show) and promotion while totally undermining the strength of real Indian market. I will meet you after five years and you will tell me that this was nothing but blip in radar at backdrop of real Baahubali market and collections with online ticketing mania. Chinese movies are on rise and they will be promoted more for next 5 years. This will increase online ticketing corruption with stronger players set to benefit with no credibility and no benefits for Indian distributors.. Will save this and ask this question after 5 years my friend and see how elated are you about China market.

At the same time when only Khan movies will be promoted , Bollywood as a whole will loose because Khans can not give movies every week. Hrithik and Ranbir are going downhill, Ajaybhai and Akshay hardly break even and no Ranveer is not popular on own. That is why 95% movies flop when you start worshipping stars and not content. This is where we are at present stage in Bollywood but thirst for good content movies from South India will continue to rise.

  • @indicine as far as that collecting 10% more that is because hahk dominated the south and east circuit.. Which was not the case with gadar as it had a lagaan to compete with and was doing excellent business at A grade centres… Had gadar been a solo release imo it would have collected in between 90-95..
Footfalls were half of hahk.. LMFAO
    Gadar 5.05 (lagaan ff 1.98)
Hahk 7.6 half of it lmao..
Extraordinary is a very small thing to describe gadar collection from single screens even hahk didn’t performed that well as far as SS performance is concerned..

  • And this is a fact whenever a top actor had played Sardaar on big screen the movie didn’t performed down south and especially in mumbai circuit..!!
Gadar, SIK.. to name a few..

  • @indicine I’m not even talking about overseas performance because it’s u only who has said that collection from overseas are like bonus for every movie…!!!

  • I bet you only Rajamouli can make a epic like this. Only he can beat his records. His next will have great expectations.

  • @indicine
Has the shivaji film starring riteish deshmukh been shelved?
I have been hearing about the movie since 2015 .

  • I wanna see BahuBILLU 3 with our Dadaji in the lead… 3.7 billions fans will definitely watch this magnup ‘mahacrap’ opus for sure…!

  • @Just ketch… So u dont know about ritesh deshmukhs family background … For ur kind information his father was cm of maharashtra for long time

  • You didnt cite the example of 2011 Halloween Extravaganza that was Dadajis RATOON POINT ZERO…!

Made on a budget of 125cr with India earnings of less than 120cr…!

  • Biggest problem about B2s success will be that forever forever every crapgiri released in the future by Bollywoods 3 idiots/ losers ie Pluto Boy, Jadoo Boy n Joker Boy will ALWAYS look weak, poor n pathetic…!

Only Salmir will challenge n beat B2 in the coming yrs- FACT

  • A sci-fi project proposed to Aamir after TOH should be made if possible…!

If not then PK sequel where the movie goes to an overseas galaxy region like PLUTO. PK goes to search for these mysterious 3.7 billion lungi wearing aliens and asks them where is God ooops no he asks them why wont they watch Dadajis crapgiri acting inside a theatre…?

    Lol

  • Gauri Khan n Laal Mirchi executives are working hard on buying rights /remake rights to the Bahubali brand so that they can rebrand the sequel to 2016s contentLESS Billu Fan as BahuBILLU 3…! It may just work n trick south audiences into watching Dadajis crapfest n may also help the movies all India collections reach 100cr gross…!

  • man all India footfalls of Baahubali-2 will be 10 cr
In overseas too I think footfalls will be 1-2cr
    This is simply epic

    @Indicine
Collection wise yes three idiots did. But actually footfalls of 3 idiots were less, same footfalls as Kabhie khusie kabhie gham.

  • This happens every time when a phenomenon is happening..
Hrithik debut created never before never after craze all-over the country. Then came many newcomers to become next sensation.
When shanker phenomenon started with gentleman (1993) humse hai muquabula (1994)..Etc there were many new shankers.. trying luck on mega budget films with their ” shankereseque creativity ” .. among those flops and disasters , Nagarjuna starrer ratchagan was highest budget film in India beating Hindi films and shanker films.
    Now everyone is after rajamouli

  • It’s easy to become rajamouli..
    Big budget
    Vfx
    Kings and wars
..But the result will be ” badrinath ” and rudramadevi ”

Similarly , there was a formula for becoming shanker ( mainly in 90s )
    Big budget
Out of box songs /stunts / story
    A.r. Rahman

Results were ratchagan , kadhalar dhinam.. etc
( On the positive side ,almost all fake shanker films had all-time great songs .. thanks to arr )

  • @Indicine
Please dont mind this guy @Deadpool. His actor’s highest footfall is 2.1 cr Mohra, what will he understamd about footfalls and collections? Now his actor has stooped to level of Arjun Rampal(Ra-one) and Vivek oberoi(Krishh3)

  • Indicine please accept my 5 year challenge on two benchmark
    1) If Indian film distributor get any single distributor share or even 20%profit for China box office. Even if movies are sold with distribution rights, the selling price increases by 20% from yearly average. (Dangal was sold at minuscual 2 million dollars:))
    2) If number of new (non khan) films making even 10 million in China grows to one every three years if it made twice (twenty million) in USA? (Cinetrak compares and predicts countries to estimate overseas gross)

We will talk after 5 years and ask are still as excited about China market prospects or it is an uneven playing field where only certain trade connections matter.

  • In my view, Bollywood should reduce rom-com movies. Try to make good movies, in Indian malayalam and tamil movies are best for good films, But bollywood make less good movies.(i dont know what srk doing from past 3 to 5 years.. he makes some stupid movies and call it “Big Film”, what is the meaning of Big film ??? ) I am die hard SRK fans, His scipt selection is very poor, He should be very selective, see how aaamir doing. His movies make records bcoz of High power of script, If he select Bad script he will also taste Flop..

  • Bahubali has given big iniative to make more budget film in India , lets see how many will come forward for such projects . on other hand now the film with unnecessary low budget film have to reduce in the industry to avoid loss , we would love to see top star to come with such film which will something that can compete to world level . and lastly to break record of bahubali one must have to take chance

  • Less than 2 weeks after the release of ‘Bahubali 2’, we’ve had 3 major announcements:

A UAE businessman wants to invest Rs 1,000 crore to make the epic Mahabharata (narrated from Bhima’s perspective). He has reportedly signed Malayalam superstar Mohanlal to play Bhima and is keen on casting Hrithik Roshan as Krishna.

@Indicine : You got it completely wrong. This movie was announced before the release of Baahubali 2. Get your stats right.

  • Randamoozham film adaptation has been under discussion for more than 20 years. While mohanlal is an apt choice for bheema, age is catching up with him. Same with amitabh as bheeshma. Biggest problem is that the director is an absolute novice. The novel is a realistic potrayal of the battle and needs a director with a keen vision not an ad maker in the ilk of vkp. Even the great hariharan who directed some of the best adaptations of mt’s work shied away from this one.
Sure to flop if not handled right.
