Aamir Khan has postponed the theatrical release of ‘Secret Superstar’ from August 4 to the Diwali weekend – setting up a clash with Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar’s Robot 2.0.
The decision comes two weeks after Akshay Kumar’s ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ was postponed from June 2nd to August 11th, making it two major releases a week after a word-of-mouth dependent film like ‘Secret Superstar’.
It’s a sensible business decision as ‘Secret Superstar’ isn’t a commercial film featuring Aamir Khan in the lead. The superstar only has a cameo and the film needed time to grow. During a major festive weekend like Diwali, there should be enough space for a film like ‘Secret Superstar’ and the more commercial ‘Robot 2.0’.
This is what we had predicted in last week’s QnA, when a reader asked about Secret Superstar releasing a week before two major films “We think Aamir will push Secret Superstar to a different date. He is one of the best minds in film business and he’ll probably know it’s a small word-of-mouth film. It needs two open weeks to grow and perform at the box office. If it comes a week before the two major films, it may not find too many takers in Week 2 unless it turns out to be an exceptional film. Even assuming it’s an outstanding film, it’ll still lose out on business”
a bad decision taken by chalak lomdi, now a days it has become a trend that release your film against a big film get free publicity, and if film turns out good take extra advantage of it, but this film won’t find any audience against a mega film 2.0, disaster confiremd

Why diwali ? Aamir should release it on his best period Christmas.although he had a small cameo but his presence is enough to sell tickets at box office.if its content is anywhere close to dangal then it can surprise and give tough competition to Tiger zinda hai .
Everybody comes out to watch movies on festivals due to holidays ..it also has become a trend for viewers to watch movies on festivals..better report movie Will always do well .
Back in 2009 ..blue opened to 100% occupancy and did Way more business then combine business of ATB & MAMK ..same way SOS opened very low to JTHJ but came close in lifetime due to Better Reports .
This will backfire .. because aamir thinks 2.0 is just another hyped big budget film in the lines of dhoom , dilwale or bang bang.. but what we are about to witness is the biggest movie event in the history of Indian film industry. 2.0 will be released in unimaginable number of screens , the hype and buzz will hit all time high after teaser release.
In North , 2.0 will be like baahubali 2 with Salman and sharukh in lead roles.
It’s better to avoid clash with 2.0 even if you are coming with dhoom 4 , you will get crushed. Only baahubali 2 can hope for some kind of competition in a clash with 2.0
chhota Chetan has Played A good move.. I hope exhibitors give it only 250 screens… robot 2.0 should get 4000 screens .
@Chu Javed ..Ghanta ..it has fallen Badly on 5th week ..it will do 1CR only in 5th week means end of its run ..Total after 5 weeks will 116.50 as I predicted so I hope indicine doesn’t do any ghapla to make it bigger grosser then jolly2!
might turn out to be a master stroke………remember a major festival like Diwali has potential of delivering a 300 cr plus film…..
Robot 2 is a sci fi thriller…………if content is expected, potential should be around 150 cr – 200 cr at best…
Secret Superstar is a family film with very low budget……..clashing with a major film on Diwali will give major eyeballs and publicity to the film ……….Also brand Aamir will ensure enough screens for the a low budgeted film……..
Secret Superstar is a WOM film like Taare Zameen Par……..By releasing it on 04/08 , it would have faced serious competition in week 2 from 2 major films……….Diwali release will allow it to grow as WOM spreads due to holidays and and usually Diwali releases have atleast two open weeks….

I personally feel this is not a great decision . Secret Superstar is a small film where Aamir is playing cameo . Zaira Wasim is playing the lead role in the film . SS can be compared with Dear Zindagi, Naam Shabana and Dhobi Ghat . 2.0 is a massive film because of Rajni Sir, Shankar, Akshay Kumar, Sequel factor and massive budget . August is looking jam packed with TEPK, Ring and Reloaded . I think SS can release in November as there are no films except Padmavati . SS has absolutely no chance in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala . SS is a multiplex dominated film while 2.0 will appeal to both multiplex and single screen audiences . The presence of Ring and TEPK could have severely affected SS in August but the same can happen on Diwali . !!!!!!!!!!

@Javeeda Everyone knows Welcome was supposed to be the highest grossing film of 2007 if not the clash. It earned just 10 cr less than Om Shanti Om despite TZP carrying better WOM than it. With solo release, Welcome would have easily been HGOTY and ATHG.

Robot 2.0 Hindi version will open at 60 cr net or more ( without considering 3d rates ) – anyone have doubts? Wait untill teaser release – in terms of hype and buzz no Hindi film will have comparison.. at least since 1991 hum or shahenshah of 80s
Against a 60cr opener .. secret superstar will be super lucky if it manages to get 500 screens and 3 or 5 cr openings

@Sunny akkiholic but Aamir still has guts to not release Dangal without cutting down national anthem and flag scene unlike Canadian star who released Airlift with chopping of flag scene. Now he is working as supporting actor in big budgeted 2.0 because no one spending big amount for his solo movies. Be in limit, we also know to give great names to akki Canadian star.

When someone says Secret Superstar will destroy 2.0 then I am like “Are you out of your mind?”. Even in the worst case scenario it won’t be affected 1%. Secret Superstar if finds extraordinary WOM will do good but still won’t effect 2.0.
Akki Paji will realise how does it feel when he tried to get benefit of small budget movie through free publicity by clashing with big budget movie. Karma bites back.
we all must understand that a film like Secret Superstar isn’t a full fledged Aamir film and that it wont really effect the business of Robot 2…..
Its a classic case of a VERY big budgeted film releasing with a very LOW budget film on one off the biggest festivals!!

It’s time for Akshay to taste his own medicine. Robot didn’t work at the hindi box-office and even if he’s a great director, Shankar isn’t a S.S Rajamouli to cross 100 cr in hindi only. Only hope to create history in the north was Akshay. But let’s face it : a cameo of Aamir Khan >>> Akshay in a full fledged role.
I’m a big fan of SRK but we have to admit that no one can equal Aamir when it comes to box-office, the guy is on another level.
The fact that SRK fans like @Javeeda are so frustrated on Akki itself proves how insecure they are. It was a forgone conclusion that SRK is way behind Bhai and Aamir. SRK has already fallen to Akki and Hrithik level.
Now doubt that after clashing with TEPK, Gigastar will have another underperformer in his belt. Then I hope Bhaijaan? releases his next film with Akki and Karan Johar on Xmas 2018 so that Akki can officially kick Gigastar out of Top 3 forever?.
