Salman Khan, the most bankable star in the industry today, started his career with Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyaar Kiya which remains one of the biggest hits of his career. Barjatya was also instrumental in giving Salman a film like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian Cinema.
Some of his other hits in the 90s are Baaghi, Saajan, Karan Arjun, Jeet, Judwaa, Biwi No 1, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya.
It was after Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1999 that Salman’s career began to nose-dive. In the next 5 years (2000 – 2004), Khan had only two hits – Baghban (special appearance) and Mujshe Shaadi Karogi (multi-starrer). Tere Naam and Garv did reasonably good business.
Between 2005 and 2009, Salman had a few massively successful films like Partner and No Entry, but most of his films like Jaan-e-mann, Baabul, Salaam-e-Ishq, Yuvvraaj, Marigold – just to name a few – sank without a trace at the box office.
The biggest turning point in Salman’s career came when Prabhu Deva’s Wanted (2009) bought back the single-screen audience to theatres. Post the success of Wanted, Salman began to take his career more seriously, stopped doing films as favours to some of his friends in the industry and signed films that targeted both the single-screen and multiplex audience.
Dabangg released in 2010 and went on to break all possible box office records – the opening day, weekend and first week record of 3 Idiots. Ready was the biggest non-holiday grosser of all time. Bodyguard surpassed all records set by Dabangg only a year ago and Ek Tha Tiger almost joined the 200 crore club.
As things stand today, Salman Khan holds several records and is the undisputed ‘king’ of the domestic box office.

Stay tuned for the box office comparisons and analysis of other top stars coming up in a few days. For now, discuss Salman Khan!
He is one and only actor give 6 all time blockbuster movies. He is true king of bollywood.
Films like Andaz Apna Apna were BO flops but now cult classics. Salman himself said that while Hello Brother with Rani flopped commercially at the time, today the DVD sales are equal to AAA. Khamoshi was a huge critical success & one of the landmark films of the ninties. So it’s not fair to just judge based on B.O collections. And he did a lot of films for friends & special appearances which increased his number of flops.
Still, six ATB, four BB, four superhits & ten clean hits. Impressive.
Even I feel aap is block buster
Good I Like Your Speech
very rightly said.
i personally saw more than 500 times andaz apna apna,
and even now whenever i became sad or frustrated from life, i again see Andaz apna apna, for me Andaz apna apna is in one of ever best film of history of all the movie worlds
Marigold was 1 cr. lol
Yeh lambhe judai ke – 0.45 crore of SRK
Indicine , u forgot to mention that Salman khan has the highest number of ATBB ,has the highest number of year topping films and many more..but we r finally thankful to every directors n every techicians of film industry to give as such a wonderful Megastar Salman khan to India..he is common man’s hero n will remain till end..Thank u Salman Khan for entertaining us .
Salman khan movie like kick does not have good story but still blockbuster i think audience is fool and crazy to salman otherwise salman is average hero
I guess you need a kick in the a…. for calling the audience fool. Everyone have their own choice and préférences, some like Salman’s movies, some don’t like them but you can’t call people fools because you don’t like Salman’s movies
That’s called stardom..
Kick didn’t had a great story but a good entertainer….
indicine u missed one record here…. back 2 back 6 flops record also goes 2 salman. Actually its happened two times.
Akshay gave back to back 16 flops lol??
most number of (1-3)cr movies.. another record 4 baji, oops its bhai
Out of 69 he gave 31 successful films=below 50% success ratio… he has given too many flops in a row… Shahrukh and Aamir are the only actors who have success ratio of more than 75%
Jhoot srk have 50% success ratio within the support of yash Raj.
Aarzu khan
That’s because they chose the oath of one movie per year or max to max two. Otherwise they would also have given many flops
It will take another 10-15 years with Dabangg series reaching 20+ and remaking superhits telugu movies like Kick,Ready etc to get the success rate of SRK!!!.
SRK is way ahead of Salman khan!!!
Agree with @Maya. Most of Salman’s flops are classics today such as AAA, Jaanam Samjha Karo, Khamoshi, JaaneMan. Flops are part of the business, what matters is how you respond after a flop and how you sustain your stardom. Salman has done both and now he rules!
He doesn’t really rule Bollywood, SRK is given the names of “Baadshah of Bollywood,” “King of Bollywood.” He is also known as the face of Bollywood and the greatest actor of Bollywood.
Some of the Hits mentioned are not hits like Baaghi, Patthatr ke phool and Maine Pyaar kyun kiya. While salman no doubt is a big superstar today but if you closely analyse his career in decade 1990-1999 and 2000-2009, majority of his hits are multi-starrers where he was overshadowed in many films like saajan, Jeet, HAHK, Biwi No.1 and No entry.
His performance in the decade 2000-2009 is below average. His best phase has come when the business has increased so much and it helped some of his average films to become blockbusters. But today he is no.1 in India and all the best to him, it took him 20 years to reach this position
My dear brother u can can chech baaghi and Maine pyar kyon kia both were hit and pathar k phool was an average u can also check at box office India
KKHH is not Salman’s ATB and ETT and Bodyguard are just blockbusters not ATB.This is not expected from Indicine.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is not a Salman film goddammit…. and Bodyguard is not ATBB.. ETT can be called an All Time Blockbuster
Bodyguard was just a ‘blockbuster’, while Ek Tha Tiger was a ‘All Time Blockbuster. Corrected.
He gave 10 back to back hits from wanted . nobody can do this.
acording to BOI ett and bodyguard are not all time blockbuster and kuch kuch hota hai salman was in guest appearance. so he has 3 atbb.
wow…!!! He is sensible now, and enjoying his good phase. Best wishes Mr. Salman khan….!!!! Love u..
indicine: what abt Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? its not salman movie. He only had a 10 min role.
@indicine, you should make actor’s box office analysis list with only their lead role films.
Very nice article…….
most of the hits before wanted are multi starrers, that shows his box office credibility.
Now everyone can see, how inconsistent he is……with a success ratio of only 45%, he is way behind his contemporaries like SRK and Aamir.. If we closely analyse this article, then it indicates that in the spans of 2000-2004 and 2005-2009, he was so inconsistent and desperate for a hit / superhit.. During the same years, SRK and Aamir gave back to back superhits and blockbusters….
after 2009, definitely he made his come back with a boom, but again we can see, that after getting a huge success with Wanted, he gave 3 movies, which were a curse for producers — like Main Aur Mrs Khanna (disaster), London Dreams (flop), Veer (Below average) and it so happens that, when he enjoyed a huge success with wanted….soon he realized his mistake and got back into his masala track and after that, all know the rest of story..
This proves that he is a highly inconsistent and less versatile actor with a poor success ratio….in terms of box-office, he is invincible now-a-days, it’s a universal fact, but in terms of acting and consistency, he is nowhere in front of aamir and srk….!!!
@indicine… ur list needs a lot of corrections… plz rectify them as soon as possible…but the most funny thing is, u mentioned “kuch kuch hota hai” in the credit of salman.. it’s something like, give the credit of ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Dabangg 2’ to Arbaaz… hope you’ll make the corrections as soon as possible…
Romantic movies, family movies- Maine pyar Kiya, hahk, hum saath saath hain, kkhh (brief but important role)
Action- Dabangg 1 &2, ett, bodyguard
Tragic movies- tere naam, kyon ki
Comedy- andaz apna apna.
You tell he’s not versatile. Lol his roles are different unlike SRK whos just like parrot doing the same thing over and over again
indicine please remove Kuchh Kuchh hota hai from this list…. He was just guest artist there.. If you start considering that than may be Anupam Kher & Johny lever will have most ATBB movies in history of cinema!!!!!!
Salman Khan malgré qu’il était artiste invité à KKHH, a activement participé à la réussite de ce film (ATBB), par son charisme et sa forte personnalité. Un autre acteur quel qu’il soit ne pourra pas faire cette prouesse.
Salman Khan’s reign began with Dabangg and has ended with Dabangg 2. Move over – its Ranbir time.
Don’t live in past glory and don’t live in past disappointment.
Salman has moved, he has left behind past disappointment…..and embracing glory.
while another star is still living on past glory…..
I would like to see the farcial haters’ faces who said Salman had given 40 flops. Dont they learned math in their schools? The list shows how roller coaster his career has been but the most important point is everytime he was down and critics considered him as out of race he stormed back with bang. Yes, he had some rough patches in his career but finally have conquered Box office and proved his power!!!!!!!!
KKHH is not Salman’s film n ETT was a BB not an ATBB.
So salman success ratio is 45% good as he done so many movies and the kind of movies he did in some past years its good actually here in commend section i m finding those guys who were saying salman has 49 flops while i get only 32 from this list below avg and average are neither a flop nor a success so where are those stupid who were counting 49 flops hahaha fools. And srk fans good mad while seeing kkhh counting as salman list hey stupid mentally retarted fools like you can neglect salman presence but it salman who made this blockbuster to atbb i know you will say salman was not consistent those time but you can see in 1998 he has 3 successful movies other than kkhh and i think some srk fans not seen kkhh who saying that salman has 10 min role ya you can say because if srk can commit that in billu he has guest appearance when he had almost 30 min role than his fans can commit they counting heroes as salman flop but they should know that in that movie he has only 15-20 min role.
True…
They forget that only salman want to do that character for helping karan johar debut movie, when other actor reject
Those asking to remove kkhh from the list, they must remember there r 9 films wher salman gave extended appearances like kkhh, then remove all,why only kkhh.remove all below extended role n then see his record will b much better
Biwi ho to aisi
Kkhh
Bagbaan
Fir milenge
Saawan
Salame ishq
Saawaria
Heroes
Hello
7 flop and 2 hits will b less.now see the avrg/film including special app is 25.55 while excluding special app the average per film goes above 29cr per film.
@indicine pls correct colleection of kurbaan,it is 5 cr not 1.8cr.pls check it is semi hit not flop.
Haters : Read it again Salman is ‘undisputed king’ of Box Office in India. Period !!!!!!!!!
Had Garv been released today, it would shatter ETT’s record.
I would say It was Aamir who brought single screen audience with Ghajini but Salman consolidated it by Wanted. So credit goes to both Aamir and Salman for bringing back huge collections trends at Box office. We have another Khan who was doing movies only for overseas and multiplex audiences until he realized and coming up with a bogus masala crap CE!!!!!!
SRK most overrated movies are:
DDLJ
Kkhh
K3g
CE
HNY
They say apart from him no one else can act in Darr. Actors like Prashant Narayanan Nawazuddin Siddiqui Manoj Bajpai Asutosh Rana would have also nailed that role.
He’s a heroine dependent hero. No movie of his can do well without romancing with a girl (except for a few)
But bhaijaan can carry forward the story by his own acting skills. He’s a superb actor.
Awards don’t make an actor great because according to me our award functions are quite dumb and are biased towards SRK. Some people call him greater than Bachchan Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Khanna. What fools!!
Salman is the best
They forget that director first choice for baazigar, chakde India and ghajini was salman..
Salman reject baazigar cos he didnt want do negative role and for chakde and ghajini, salman denied due of lack of time
