Rocky Handsome Review

John Abraham is known as Action Abraham for a reason. The man is one of the rare leading actors in Bollywood who knows how to pull off action scenes with aplomb. He just knows action. And so does Nishikanth Kamath who came together successfully in Force. Now they’ve come back with the remake of Oriental (Korean) thriller The Man From Nowhere. Do they succeed in giving the Hindi audience a good action film? Let’s find out.

Story: Kabir (John Abraham) is happy in Seychelles and married to the love of his life (Shruti Hassan). His life gets turned on its head when she dies in strange circumstances. Things then focus to Goa. Kabir now runs a pawn shop there and becomes friends with the neighbouring child Naomi who has a overtly sexual mother Anna (Nathalia Kaur). All’s not well there, obviously. Two brothers Kevin and Luke run a drug racket which also specializes in other illegal things. The child gets caught up in the middle of all this, and it is up to Kabir to rescue her. Is he able to do it? Watch the intense climax to find out!

Rocky Handsome Review

Review: Nishikant Kamath is out of form with this film. What’s lacking is a narrative coherence and a soul to the proceedings. He shows the emotions but hardly anything registers in the viewers’ hearts because the action is too bang-bang loud. The action here supersedes the storytelling and that’s what derails the film. The scenes are cut in a confusing manner and the tone is too depressing. The tone mismatch is a byproduct of the director’s decision to remake the Korean film.

The cinematography of Rocky Handsome is top notch and probably one of the best things about the film. The production design is good too. The detailing of Goa and the drug racket is worth the effort. The action choreography is marvellous, especially in the last few scenes. Credit must be given to the Thai action choreographer. The music of Rocky Handsome is nothing to write home about. Songs like Rock The Party should have been left behind in the last decade.

Action: John Abraham is in fine form when he is doing action and he seems fit AF. But when it comes to emoting, he still has problems. But that can also be credited to the character of a depressive maniac he is portraying. He was good in Madras Cafe. Shruti Hassan doesn’t have too much to do here but she is alright in her small-ish role and flashback scenes. The child actor Diya is very good and could be the Munni of this year, minus the cultural significance of Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Conclusion: Rocky Handsome is not a bad film. It is far from one. It is just apt. If you’re going to watch Rocky Handsome just to see John Abraham take on dozens of men all by himself and that too bare chested, then Rocky Handsome will be right up your alley. If you’re looking for some substance, however, Rocky Handsome is a no go. For everyone else, it would be nice to see John back to producing flicks like Vicky Donor and Madras Cafe.

Pros:

  • John Abraham in action scenes
  • The cinematography and production design
  • The action choreography

Cons:

  • The incoherent plot and tone mismatch
  • The music is a downer
  • The character actors are miscast

Rating: ★★½☆☆

  • about “music is a downer”
nobody goes to watch this for the music. its just action-packed entertainment

  • So both rocky & dawn of Justice receiving ordinary reviews so kapoor family can mint big money this week. Great for us Youngistaan supporters

  • BTW missed the 1st day 1st show of Batman vs. Superman…Buzz is extremely high everywhere in Kolkata…BTW it already sets a new record with over 160+ million USD in its very 1st day…2nd film after Star Wars to have to potential of breaking Avatar’s record…

  • Zootopia is awesome…Watch it,if u don’t…Rocky Handsome will emerge as a clean HIT as the budget isn’t too high…

  • This review is pretty good . I was really excited for Rocky Handsome after seeing the teaser . But the trailer was not exciting as the teaser . Rocky Handsome and Batman vs Superman will release tomorrow . BVS will definitely affect RH it is difficult to put a number because youngsters are desperately waiting for it . I hope RH becomes a Hit and gives a boost to John’s career . Since Madras Cafe he has done only WB which was mediocre and failed to do 100 CR . Also the A Certificate will affect RH because family audiences will avoid and prefer K&S .

  • I am actually underage (13 years old) so cannot watch Rocky Handsome (I am a big fan of action movies and dark , gripping thrillers like this and Drishyam). Batman v Superman tickets already booked for tommorow evening. Please review it also. Already scared for it after reading mixed reviews everywhere

  • Watched #RockyHandsome in a preview show.
The makers try 2 make a dark action thriller n they don’t disappoint in that , but d film lacks soul .
John Abraham try his best but d screenplay is weak . john n d Lil girl both played their characters well . Nishikant kamat n his onscreen brother both r bad n irritating.
Don’t understand d casting. N also Bgm is pretty bad n inconsistent.
But d film stands out on d action choreography division . Superbly executed , hats off.
N also I like d work of d art n cinematography team. They doing a good job .

If u love action , then it’s a must watch for u but overall its pretty avg film.

  • My short review of Batman v Superman.
As an ardent Batman fan right from my childhood, I made sure that I catch one of Batman v Superman : Dawn Of Justice’ premier shows a day before the release worldwide.
Expectations were high as the movie kicked off with Ben Afleck driving through Metropolis’ streets in the midst of chaos & destruction (remember Man Of Steel 2013 ?). From that point, one would feel he/she is in for a treat but unfortunately that never happens throughout the movie.
I had read a couple of articles stating that Zack Snyder will be making changes to the storyline as opposed the ‘The Dark Knight’ Returns (the comic volume on which the plot of the movie is based), but Snyder rather ends up changing everything which was deciphered in the comics & serves you a confusing mess.
The initial 45 minutes after the opening sequence seem forced & stretched, it’s the 2nd half & the climax where the movie actually does take off.
Ben Afleck does an honest job as the ‘Old Batman’, but the problem here is he plays the Bruce Wayne part alot more than Batman. Henry Cavil as Superman is better than what he was in Man Of Steel, but he looks more like a Bollywoodish lover boy/son at times rather than the role he is playing. Gal Gadot shines in her short role as Wonder Woman & you wish you had more of her in the movie rather than Amy Adams who keeps popping up on the screen every now & then.
The background score of the movie is terrific to say the least. Action sequences in the climax are breath-taking.
The unintended introduction of Justice League characters is a master-stroke.
But the movie falls flat where it mattered the most. The concept & the storyline is just not convincing.
When Bruce Wayne is about to spear off Superman with the Kryptonite, he stops cause Clark Kent shouts “Martha”, in comes Lois Lane letting Batman know that Luthor has got hold of Martha (Kent’s mom, she shares her name with Wayne’s dead mother). From that point it becomes more like a ‘Karan-Arjun’ fighting a villain tale rather than ‘Batman v Superman’.
What hurts more, is the predictability of the movie. As a viewer, you easily keep guessing what’s happening next.
Nor does the movie entertain you wholesome nor does it hit you in the face, & once you walk out of the theatre, you wonder what exactly was happening inside ?
    My Rating – 2/5.

Hahaha Don’t blush baby. Just gv me the jawab

  • “Action is too ‘Bang Bang ‘loud”,says all.
Another case study after Bang Bang where praiseworthy action sequences send script to backburner.

  • I always judge any film from it’s trailer.. the trailer told me: it’s a good film, go for it.. don’t care about reviews as to each is his own.. although am not into action films, but when it’s a good film, so no one could say: it’s bad just because it doesn’t fit in his/her shoes!!! but it does for others.
The film is really good, touched my heart, it’s a wow action film, and am really surprised why it opened poorly at the box office!! it’s a film for guys to enjoy.. full action.. best action, even better than the movie Baby.
The film has a soul.. sorry to tell in Indicine that I don’t agree with what you’d mentioned in yr review that it has no soul.. it touched my heart, and also noticed that the audiences left the theater with tears in their eyes.
    Some good songs too.

The only negative I could say was the child wearing a wig on her head!! why? why was she wearing this wig?!!

If you are an action lover. then go for it.. the second half is even better than the first half.
I could say: It’s John Abraham’s best performance and he deserves to be nominated for this film.
