Jai Gangaajal Review

Priyanka Chopra has been on a roll recently what with the success of Bajirao Mastani, then her TV show Quantico becoming a sleeper hit and being cast as the main villain in Baywatch opposite The Rock. So it seems very strange when she stars in this film about corruption in the Hindi heartland of India. This movie seems like an outlier not only because of that but also because it has the word Gangajal in the title, which lends itself to being a spiritual successor to the 2003 Ajay Devgan film.

Story: Bankepur is a place in the middle of India, which is torn by corruption, rapes, kidnapping and is ruled with force by politician Babloo Pandey (Manav Kaul). He has police officers like BN Singh (Prakash Jha himself) on his payroll. In comes SP Abha Mathur (Priyanka) who is a hardtalker and deals everything with a stubborn idealistic attitude. Things get out of hand, when Babloo tries to get hold of the villagers land for his personal gains. A mass agitation against this ensues. Amidst all this, there is BN Singh who finally decides to do things for his uniform rather than for money.

Jai Gangaajal

Jai Gangaajal Review

Screenplay and Direction: Jai Gangaajal is a film that has its heart in the right place but falters due to the uneven narrative. The story elements and cases of torture shown in the film have all been seen before. Coming down to it, Jai Gangaajal doesn’t offer anything new. The screenplay is a test on the nerves especially in the second half. The dialogues, however, are ingrained in the Hindi speaking milieu of the setting.

Technically, Jai Gangaajal is well aligned with the nature of the film. The cinematography captures the rough terrain of the land, the editing is decent. The action scenes seem a bit unrealistic which takes the audiences farther away from the film. The background music also blares too loudly and sometimes it becomes difficult to even hear the dialogues.

Acting: Priyanka Chopra is almost miscast as Abha Mathur. She is earnest and carries off the dialogues with ease. But, sadly, her makeup and looks don’t go well with the setting. She tries her best but can only do so much. Prakash Jha does well with his part as it is the best written part. He looks the part too. Manav Kaul is menacing but it is sad to see him getting typecast as a politician. Such a talented actor needs to be explored more. Rahul Bhat also does well. It is good to see actors like Manav Kaul and Rahul Bhatt getting good roles in mainstream Bollywood films.

Conclusion: Jai Gangaajal is helped by the setting of the film but a lot of it feels like old wine in a new bottle. It is commendable that they made a woman centric film which relies on action and drama but the film eventually falls flat in the only criteria it is meant to be judged as. It fails as an entertaining, coherent film. It fails as a cop drama. If you have time to waste, go watch this flick.

  • I knew it. Production values looked very low from the trailer. Ppl r bored of such films. Good it will flop even though i like priyanka!

  • PC was way too glamorous for this film…And the trailer was pathetic too, with her performing Dabangg Singham kind of action scenes.
    Waste of a sequel.

Buy a Gangaajal DVD instead, solid film it was!

  • I was always sure that JG will not be even 10 % as good as Gangaajal . The trailer was OK but it had no punch . The makers should have made this movie with Ajay Devgn because the way he played the character of Amit Kumar is outstanding . Gangaajal has gained a cult status over the number of years and people still watch it on TV . It is one of the Best Performances and one of the Best movies of AD . So I think after GOA, KKHH 3, Tere Bin Laden : Dead or Alive and now JG this year has been really bad for Sequels . Looking at the response and the WOM JG looks like a Flop . @ Indicine Post the total collections and verdicts of Airlift, GOA, Sanam Teri Kasam, Fitoor, Sanam Re, Loveshuddha, Aligarh and Tere Bin Laden : Dead or Alive . Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Flop written on the trailer…no one can replace ajay devgn in the industry…what he does only he can do that ….ouatim was superb with solid performance of AD and then ouatimd came without AD who is the soul of its prequel…nd we all know what happend with ouatimd

  • audience nt connected emotionally with Jai Gangajal means it will flop..Bollywood should avoid making sequels, remakes of classic
    movies

  • i knew it
from the trailer itself one can feel its a poorly made film.
if ajay would have been in the film it would have done better

  • FLOP.
Priyanka should focus either completely in bollywood or completely in hollywood. Since hollywood is doing good to her she should stick there. Never try to sail in 2 boats. Otherwise you wont survive in any boat.

  • I am happy that it will flop !!
    She ( Priyanka ) betrayed srk ..
She could avoid the clash if she had tried.
I am extremely excited to see Deepika and Priyanka sink like a ship.
We don’t want to see her face in Don 3 .
    New actress should be chosen.
Btw, heard that Race 3 is on the cards
Hope it fetches independence weekend release next year …!!!!

  • Gangajal still remains one of my favorite Ajay d movies but seems like PC & jha have ruined the sequel . A sequel of a good movie gone waste!

She is no doubt a much better actress than srk but she should know her limitations that she too like srk can’t pull off such tough cop roles convincingly.

While she is too beautiful to be a cop srk is exactly the polar opposite, you know what I mean :D :D

  • I thought Prakash Jha’s acting was pretty bad in trailers, I could barely see any emotion on his face. I liked PC’s intensity, but those action scenes certainly didn’t suit on her. They also revealed whole plot in the trailer itself.
After reading this review, I can only say what a waste of a sequel.
