Mahesh Bhatt speaks his heart out on Parveen Babi

Mahesh Bhatt speaks about his relationship with Parveen Babi.

“I was watching the last scene of ‘Woh Lamhe’ in my editing room when it dawned on me why human beings have always tried to keep their dead alive – we try to keep them alive in order to keep them with us. ‘Woh Lamhe’ is my last good bye to the memories of Parveen Babi. A woman whom I loved and lost.

Nostalgia is pain. The day Parveen died, I realised that despite the claims I made to myself, her memory had not withered within me with the passage of time.

Praveen’s breakdown is an old story. But I wonder if anyone could imagine what it is like to live with a person who is going mad.

Parveen BabiThe morning I left Parveen’s house before it all began comes back to haunt me. She was off to her shoot for Prakash Mehra’s film… and she kissed me good-bye. Little did I know that it was the last time I would see her as the Parveen that I knew.

How can I ever forget that heartbreaking image of her, when I walked in to the house that evening, and found Parveen, in make up and a filmy costume, cowering in a corner, with a knife in her hand, shivering with fear?

She looked like an animal, one that I had never seen before. ‘Close the door Mahesh,’ she whispered. ‘They are coming to kill us. Close the door quickly!’

And with those words ended my days of love and splendour, sin and passion with Parveen. I was looking into the eyes of madness and the face of death. Because the person that I knew had died, and with that our relationship, as we had known it, died too.

Parveen’s illness was genetic. The chances of her recovery were slim. It was in those terrible times that I discovered for myself that it is we who push the so-called ‘mentally disturbed’ to commit suicide.

Our attempt in this film is not just to make you grieve, but to leave an indelible memory of the essence of an exceptional woman who lived in another time and place.

‘Woh Lamhe’ has erupted from the deepest part of my being. And that part of me was triggered suddenly by Parveen’s death and the subsequent discovery of a tape, which my daughter Pooja found in my first wife’s house.

Parveen Babi - oldThe tape contained a letter that Parveen had recorded and sent me, in which she talked about her approaching illness, her loneliness and her need to get out of the entertainment business. The silences between her words spoke to me more eloquently than her words did.

The only regret I have is that I couldn’t see her illness coming. Looking back, I realise now that there were so many signs that I just failed to read.

Suddenly, she bathed, dressed herself in a white kurta pyjama, rolled a small mat on to the carpet and did something I had never seen her do in my three and a half years with her. She began her ‘namaaz’.

The sight was mesmerising. Her silhouette against the glow of the morning sky, her trembling lips reciting the prayers, her tears of grief metamorphosing into fervent tears of devotion… still play on the screen of my memory.

I think it was the killings of 1969 that she was referring to … You do not know what it is to lie curled up under a pile of mattresses, fearing that any moment the mob could stop the vehicle, pull me out and rape me,’ she said in a tone that sent a shiver down my spine.

When I first started to write and make movies, I felt everything could be explained. Now I see how untrue it would be if I claim to have been able to tell you the story of my life with Parveen Babi.

Life does not end. But films do. We leave the characters of a movie at the zenith of their lives or in the hours of their deaths, and there they remain frozen in time.”

  • A beautiful movie!!! beautifully portrayed!!! I don’t know what else to say!!! can’t find the words to decribe the magic of it!! :)

  • I’ve seen the movie, though I generally like Mahesh Bhatt?s movies, I wasn?t impressed with ?Woh Lamhe?. Firstly I think it creates all kinds of confusions in the viewer?s mind, secondly I do question Mahesh Bhatt?s intention. A lot of people know what it is to lose a loved one and everyone likes to hold onto good memories. For me and my age group Parveen Babi was the ultimate heroin and I surely didn?t like to see her portrayed at her worst. I think her story could?ve been told with more sensitivity, respect and dignity. Then was a time to make a difference, now is too late. No one did anything to help her then, all people can do now is remember her for her best and give the respect for the heart and soul she put into her work. The movie would be better without explioting her memories and making references to her.

  • omg this is one of the best movies i have ever seen.It also the most touching one theres so much bs movies out there this one was totally worth watching …some of the stuff was missing like how she died alone not with someone in the hospital..but its just a movie storyline that was inpired by thier life..anyways …awesome movie ..sooo sad. …the actors did a wonderful job kangana and shiny are just WOW ..great movie once again!

  • UGHHH THIS MOVIES IS REALLY TOUCHING I LOVED THE WAY KANGNA RANUAT PORTRAYED PARVEEN BABIES CHARACTER SHE MADE THE MOVIE FEEL LIKE PARVEEN IS STILL WITH US AND SHE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS EVER AND HER MOVIES WERE ALL ADORABLE LIKE HER. NO OFFENCE TO MAHESH BUTT BUT WHERE DID HE GO WHEN PARVEEN DIEAD LAST YEAR, HE JUST DISSAPEARED INTO THIN AIR. ROMOURS SAY THAT PARVEEN KILLED HERSELF WHEN AMITABH BACHAN CALLED HER. AND I JUST MIISSSS HER MOVIES WHEN I GET THE CHANCE I WATCH THEM ……. SO THNKZ MAKESH BATT FOR THIS WONDERFUL FILM WE REALLY APPRIATIATE IT AND IT WAS MADE WITH ALOT OF EFFORT AND HEART

  • Was there some kind of rift between Parveen and Mahesh uncle. For some reason, I don’t like the Bhatt clan. Instead of helping Parveen Babi , back in 80’s, he made her life worst by making Arth.
This shows that this guy is a saddist and arrogant. Even after her death, he didn’t leave her alone.
He must hate Parveen Babi like anything. Sometimes, love can change into deep rooted hatred, Parveen -Mahesh relationship is a very good example.
My heart goes out to Parveen Babi, and I wish she never had such useless relationship.

  • hi!
i watched this movie. its heart moving. i had similar experience as mahesh had. however, its a wonderful movie and it remains in the history of indian film industry.

  • What a shame such a beautiful free spirit has left us, Mahesh Bhatt has once again turned his life events and the people close to him into a money spinner, there is no longer a thing called a “gentleman’s discretion” in his dictionary, I fully believe PB’s illness was an onslaught of MB’s earlier film Arth, the guy demonstrates no sensitivity or genuine love for anyone but himself. PB ill as she was probably realised this when she up and left in the 80’s when he publicised their affair, and made their lives cheap talk for the common man on the street. He left her no place to hide in India. He should pay penance for his role in in PB’s life, making a film is not “just” penance, if he really wants to help people who suffer from mental illness he should donate the proceeds of the film to an appropriate charity working with people with mental problems. Thank God PB is in a better place where her so called well wishers cannot inflict on her further anguish.

  • There is no doubt that the movie was really good. In my opinion, Mahesh Bhatt only loved her charm and her body and once that charm is gone he left her to die alone in her appartment. When she was slim and preety, he ran away with her from Bombay saying that he doesn’t want her to get shocks. Yes thats true but, after her returning from the US he never cared about her because she became fat at that time. If he really loved her, why he wasn’t there from two days when she was dying? I don’t understand. Also, In the movie Mahesh bhatt showed himself a real hero but i guess he wasn’t a real hero in the real life because he never tried to find out her illness and he left her dying. Plus, he never cast Parveen Babi in any of his films as far as i researched. He showed himself a real hero on the screen to become A REAL HERO in the audience eyes. And i don’t think that NIKHIL was the Amitabh Bachan because Mr. Bachan was married and Jaya Bachan was a sensible woman she wouldn’t have let Amitabh Bachan do such thing. Parveen Babi’s loneliness was killing her and Mahesh Bhatt knew that so how come he didn’t marry her ? Now don’t say that it was because of the religion. Mahesh’s mother was muslim so how come he never married her? He already had two wives then whats the harm in having tree wives? IF he can share his bedroom with her he could also marry her IF HE REALLY LOVED HER. I don’t think Mahesh bhatt did anything to save her from the mentle illness. He only played with her charm but showed himself very kind on the screen. Anyways the movie was superb !!! and Mahesh BHatt is a full-time lier.

  • i agree with a lot of writers here that Mahesh Bhatt is a cruel user. he only enjoyed parveen babi’s charm and beauty. it is true, if not, why didn’t he make this movie when she was alive? because he is really a big lier. he is trying to be HERO in the eyes of people. also, the way p.babi’s was shown, i think that was cheap rather than sad. few scenes were really embarrasing. if this movie was really a homage to p.babi, it should have been made in a more decent way than showing her being raped. i think it was very bad.

  • A great movie of this era, It can touch my heart, I only want to ask that when he returned from america then where was that great true lover Mahesh but, i think he was busy to thanks God that she left india, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. from this movie it prove that mahesh but is not her true love he is just director and just ask him for different possssssssss and nothing else.
i was just think that why Mahesh not contact her, when she need mahesh really, is she only make flim for profit, she is just like other person only keep friendship with her beauty , why leave her when she beame alone, the dilouge of flim is true that he is also responsible of her death.
when she leave flim industry then why she alsone where was mahesh, ??????????????????????????

  • way to go mahesh jee!! i must say that some people know the art of being in the lime light no matter wat….i am happy that many intelligent and thinking friends have already pointed out that if mahesh jee was so head over heels in luv with parveen babi then
    1) why didnt he do anything while she was alive?
    2) why did he make a movie like Arth which deeply caused hurt to PB?
    3) why is mahesh jee trying to become a hero in the eyes of the world if we only assume that his love was real?
    4) there were many other ways to keep her memories alive then making a movie and projecting urself as a champion when in reality mahesh jee lost all interest in her when she became fat and ugly

  • Hi, I read the comments of all the people who have left them on here, so far. I have a question for the lot of you who think that Mahesh Bhatt might be a cruel user. Let’s assume for a moment that it is true, it most certainly seems like he might be trying to get a good impacting film by exploiting parveen babi’s life. BUT… let’s just think for a moment. we don’t have the right to criticize or make comments about anyone because we truly have no idea about what the real truth is. The bits and pieces that we get are based on media reports, and since when has the media ever provided the truth?
If anything, this movie is showing us what this entertainment industry is. There are stars that glow for the short period of fame that they have, and then they die their quiet deaths. What we see or hear through the media is probably not even a fraction of the truth.
I just want to say that unless and until you know something for certain, it is pointless to make hurtfull comments because where it might be true that Mahesh Bhatt is using this as a popularity stunt, it is very possible that there was something special between the two of them, that like he admitted in his statement, came to his realization after her death.
And that’s a fact of life in itself. We don’t realize the worth of the people around us until they are gone.

  • if mahesh bhatt is the same,he has potrayed himself in woh lamhe.
then he deserve a word of applause for his love.salute to you mahesh bhatt.

  • mahesh bhatt claims this is a closure.

He sold everybody to his way to stardom. He has to clear amitabh’s name. People think that the role played by nikhil, was amitabh , I think it was kabir bedi.
Mr bhatt makes a movie, on parveen and convinently forgets to mention that he was married when he had an affair with parveen babi. and also that he never directed parveen babi. what a semi auto biography .so I dont believe anything. this is all his imagination.

I think now that he has run out of idea he should make picture about his daughter pooja bhatt. her life is as colourful as his own , and she is also in the news for the wrong reason.

please dont give this mister bhatt any more space for his trash

  • i think it is so sad that when she was alive mahesh bhatt made arth which must have hurt her to no end. only after she he decided t o bring the real story out…
he must have had his reasons but i think it was an act of abandonment..

  • A mystery how could this scintillating beauty collapse in such a tragic manner. Parveen Babi was the first Indian woman to be featured on cover of the TIME magazine in 1975.

  • Guys, I dont know why it matters that mahesh bhatt or for that matter anyone is trying to take advantage of the situation. We are so involved in our reality, that we fail to understand the pain of a person undergoing schizophrenia. How would you feel if you can clearly hear someone speak, and the whole world says that they cant. The world bows to some madmen, and laughs at other madmen at the same time. Ironical isnt it .

  • got a couple of questions like all of you:
    1. Who is Nikhil? It can never be Amitji?coz i know him. Either Kabir Bedi or Danny?.
    2. Why didn?t Mahesh Bhatt help her when she most needed it instead of leaving her like used old colth? Mahesh, if your love was so truth then where was it when she came back from US and was ill and then died quietly alone in the whole world? She was a great actress and so pretty. Was it really love or just plain lust??????
    3. May Allah give her jannat and may her soul rest in peace..Ameen..
    4. Which movie did you make with her that gave you the breakthrough? Answer is a must.
    5. Did She really throw her panty at you? Who was your friend?
    6. Why didn?t you help her man??????? it?s so pathetic to let your loved one loose like that, it was your fault?.i blame you for her death and illness??

  • wat a gr8 movie!it was the most touchin movie i have ever seen.hats off 2 mahesh bhatt 4 makin such a fabulous movie.really gud one..but i really pity parveen babi for she lead a very sad life..n i feel that nobody has the right 2 say nethin abt mahesh bhatt’s love for the actress coz ppl who criticise him dont really know the ‘real mahesh bhatt’ n abt his ‘love’ for her..in all WOH LAMHE is treat for ur eyes…n shiney is excellent in the movie..much betr actor than shahrukh..n so is kangana..much betr than that idiot aishwarya

  • i think it was a touching movie bt i am confused after reading d remarks on mahesh bhatt
can nebody tell d truth????????? im an american and am very confused

  • :(
I am very sad have cried a lot. One thing to say is that if such famous actresses (as in d movie) can be ill-treated like this, we ..the next door girls have no place!

As for this person.. Mahesh Bhatt. I don’t understand wht does he get by showing his ill -sick life on such a huge scale to the world and spreading out the trouble and complications in life. To be happy you need to keep your god damn life simple………

    That’s all………

  • Me N my husband watched the movie last saturday at home.
we really wonder if nikhil was Amitabh Bachan. Was she really raped? Kangana and Shiney have done a good job.
it is really very sad if this story is true. i wonder if many of our current actresses are going thru such things n we get to see only the glamour part.
the movie has made me read about Parveen. may she be in peace now.
all of us should remember her as the really beautiful actress that she was.

  • wo lamhe, god what a story, leaving impression in the mind how dreadful a life could be. well it made my mind full of thoughts and eyes full of tear. really a superb attempt. best part of movie is even schizophernic endowed with dillusions and hallucinanations can understand the feeling of love. if it is reality then hats off to Aditya and Sana

  • The movie was really good.Didn’t have to have the unnessary seen’s in there, movie would have been a hit without them to.So that is a tip from me for your new movies you will make. That we watch movies with our parents, keep out the make out crap it doesn’t suite the desi ppl. What you guys did in the room we don’t care. Was the Rani story even true? It did scary me though. Was she really raped? If Mahesh Bhatt reallllllllllly loved her and wanted to help her.Why didn’t he marry her, fine don’t marry her aleast why wasn’t he their for her last couple of days of her life as a good friend. Why did she die at home, but not in a hospital if he new she was really ill.If he really loved her soooo…. much as they showed in the movie.Movie was was Good, story could have been made up as i read other ppls comments.Mr. Bhatt are any of your stories true.Your mom was Muslim, never got married. Why ruine your mom’s rep.YOu should have thought of your mom how your dad betrayed and left her with 2 children.I guess it’s like father like son.YOU should have never used a pretty Mentally Ill person just for your needs are you sure you didn’t rape her and drive her nuts.Make up your mind how your dad died From the story you tell in Zakhm and the story you tell in WL.Get all your facts straight and are you sure you don’t have a Mental Illness.I would want to know the tru story behind PB, but not from MB.Pls stop making movies about your family and friends your just ruining their rep im sure most of it is BS they are all dead and cant defend them selves let them RIP Mr. Bhatt.Ummmmmm…. I hope I didn’t bore all of you guys.It is so long im sure it doesnt make any sense anymore and im not going to edit.
