Dostana to Shaandaar: Dharma Productions completes 35 years

Founded by Yash Johar in the year 1980, Dharma Productions has completed 35 years in the industry.

The company’s first production was Raj Khosla’s Dostana (1980) starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman in the lead. The film went on to be the highest grosser the year.

Other noteworthy films from the banner are Duniya (1984) and Agneepath (1990) which won Amitabh Bachchan his first National Award.

But it was Karan Johar’s directorial debut in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead, that marked Dharma’s rise to prominence in the year 1998. The film went on to be the biggest blockbuster for the company.

They followed it up with films like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘My Name Is Khan’, ‘Student Of The Year’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Agneepath’ (remake) and many more films, most of which were hugely successful at the box office.

Karan Johar tweeted “It’s #35YearsOfDharma today.. my fathers goodwill and his blessings are my biggest strength.. the company stands on his vision today.. I thank every member of the dharma family for their love, loyalty and commitment to the company…”

The man who featured in the first Dharma film, Amitabh Bachchan, tweeted “35 years of ‘Dostana'”

  • Thats good of them.. They have been part of all types of different rom-com films in past 5 yrs

But currently waiting for Azhar Biopic…

  • This production house has only being making romcoms now by fooling multiplex audiences. When they made an action sports drama movie Brothers it got unduly ridiculed by critics and eventually flopped.
Their success mantra is quite simple actually..take Alia Bhatt.take any good looking actor, put 2-3 good songs with the same storyline and fool the audience.

Dharma’s next films starring Alia bhatt:
    Shaandaar
    Kapoor and Sons
    Gauri shinde’s next
    Shuddhi

  • Srk is he can is doing most Charity of compare any other Indian but he did not show because he say bta ke paise dena charity nahi publicity aur ehsaan hai

  • During 1998-2010 people trust Dharma Production blindly n gave many clasic but now lost their touch

  • /*** But it was Karan Johar’s directorial debut in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead, that marked Dharma’s rise to prominence in the year 1998. The film went on to be the biggest blockbuster for the company. ***/

and they said — Dharma made SRK , lol !

  • My favourite DHARMA CLASSIC is—-K2H2

    But PERFORMANCE ORIENTED IT’S—-MNIK,KHNH

Congratulations to Mr.KJO sir for completing 35 YEARS.KING SRK REMAINED THE BACKBONE OF THIS INDUSTRY.

@sultan bhushan, people who watched salman’s movies like ready,dabang2,bodyguard,jai ho,kick like useless cheapest masala movie and munni badnam,dabang2’s bhojpuri item song, along with fevicol, dhinka chika like vulgar songs and whose star in lifetime couldn’t able to give as CLASSIC or couldn’t give a BEST PERFORMANCE,and only won ghanta/kela awards ,their fans shouldn’t talk about ONE OF THE BIGGEST QUALITY DIRECTOR KJO SIR.can your star and favourite director in this birth can direct and act in a movie REALISTIC CLASSIC MNIK?????I don’t think so.cheapnss is in your mind,so look at someone’s good rather than ignorable comedy scenes which is entertaining rather than vulgar jokes for cheapos like you.

@babaji ka thullu,Most and hardest genre is ROM-COM,it’s cry hard to give even a hit in this genre.DHARMA PRODUCTIONS entertained both single screen as well as mutiplex audience.at least they are not cheating people’s like your idol akshay Kumar with 4 craps at a time in a year, look at your idol,at least DP is providing high quality cinematography which your star can’t afford, can he?????so don’t try to degrade DP.

  • Believe or not, but it is Karan Johar who definitely made the Dharma productions one of the big banner in Bollywood. Though I admit that I am not a fan of Karan johar as director, because except K3g (which is now also not tolerable) none of his directed flick appealed to me. Also none of his produced film excite me much.
@the phenom, I know you must aware which was srk first movie u der Dharma, Its duplicate directed by one of the best director “Mahesh Bhatt” and guess what it was a flop.

  • @ sky :
Duplicate was not a good film . So it tanked . On the other hand , K2H2 was great and it deserved all the success .
I just want to say that success of a film depends on a team-effort , not only on the banner or the star . So people who say that ‘Dharma made SRK’ are either mad or jealous !

  • But it was Karan Johar’s directorial debut in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead, that marked Dharma’s rise to prominence in the year 1998. The film went on to be the biggest blockbuster for the company.
these lines clearly says SRK is the reason behind dharma’s success

  • There are lot of talk about dangal, sultan, raess etc but mark my words next yr most surprising movie will be shivaya and mohenjodaro definitely

  • Congrats Dharma for completing 35 years in the industry but it’s high time for the production to try out something new which isn’t all about love relationships and sacrifices.I would love to see an action movie like Agneepath or a serious movie like Kurbaan.
Some of the most memorable and best movies of Dharma has starred Srk and Gauri’s next venture won’t be any different

  • I was actually surprised why dharma productions didn’t promoted brothers…
Had it been promoted like dharma style it could have taken a huge opening…

  • sign shehanshah khan in any of ur movie and see how collections grow….stop working with small superstars like srk…ranbir..akshay…though I think shehanshah khan is out of reach for your cheap production house as he has his own league…
