After back-to-back blockbusters in the form of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express, Deepika Padukone’s career is peaking at the right time. Unlike most of her contemporaries, her performances in films like Cocktail and Chennai Express have been well received both by the critics and the audience.
Which brings us to the question that we have been asked several times over the last couple of weeks – Is Deepika Padukone the top female star in the industry today? How is her fan-following compared to Katrina Kaif who hasn’t had a movie release so far in 2013.
Purely based on popularity, Katrina is way ahead of any other female actor in the industry. Her name alone ensures decent footfalls in theatres across India, something that she proved with a smaller film like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan which released just a week after Salman Khan’s Bodyguard in 2011. For Deepika, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela will be the biggest test of her career, as each of her films so far have either had super-popular music (Cocktail), was a sequel (Race 2) or featured bankable superstars (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express).
On the acting front though, there is simply no comparison. Deepika is competing with actors like Kareena Kapoor and Vidya Balan. While Katrina was criticised for her performance in films like Ek Tha Tiger and Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Deepika impressed critics in each of her last few outings. Her performance in Cocktail was award-deserving, but she lost out to Vidya’s brilliance in Kahaani last year. This year, she is one of the top contenders for the ‘Best Actress’ award for Chennai Express – the ease with which she transformed into a Tamilian girl in the Rohit Shetty film was awe-inspiring.

If we compare box office figures, Deepika is ahead, but all that could change with the release of Dhoom 3 later this year. Those interested in numbers, here’s a comparison between the last 5 films of the two actors.

Katrina Kaif can never compare to Aishwarya or Deepika – not in beauty, dancing or acting! Period!!! She is a white girl pretending to be Indian & created a story/lie about having a Kashmiri father in order to gain acceptance from the Indian audience. Period!!! She has been in the business for 10 years, getting paid crores to “ACT” & still cannot act or emote properly on screen. Period!!! She reached this level of stardom due to her lie (about being half Indian), her looks, Salman & his connections in the industry – clearly not because of her talent. Period!!! Why has she never been in an English movie? Because they have high standards when it comes to actual talent. Everything has an expiry date and Katrina is well past hers. Deepika is the clear winner here hands down!

@damnnn:aish acted good in movies like hddcs,devdas,guru,jodha akbar guzaarish.she is much more expressive than kat.kat can never do a intense role..but aish has done already(guzaarish,hddcs,devdas).this is about acting.
Dancing:kat’s most of the dance songs are western.but aish can dance both western(krazy kiya re,dhoom again) and classical(dola re,hamari mehfil etc).
Looks:okay ,both look good.but aish has a natural beauty.she looks great in traditional(devdas,jodha akbar) looks as well as in western looks(dhoom 2).while kat willn’t look good in traditional looks.
And aish was highest paid actress in her time.

The role of heroines are pretty limited, but the criteria to judge is quite a long like popularity, acting, looks, glam, dance etc.,
Popularity – Kat 5, Dip 3 (Kat alone was reason for TMK to collect the budget)
Acting – Kat 2, Dip 3 (remember how critics panned Dippy’s plastic dialogue delivery in the movie, and Kat has got the stick most of times, but also praised for ZNMD, NewYork and MBD)
Looks – Kat 5, Dip 3 (Kat has the highest image of hers downloaded on net and mobile since last 5 years)
Glam quotient – Kat 5, Dip 3 (no comparision here)
Dance – Kat 5, Dip 3 (no one currently can dance like Kat)
Final Score: Kat 22, Dips 15

Katrina works solely based on stardom similar to how salman works at the BO. Acting is not their forte. I’d rate Deepika as the bigger superstar because she combines stardom and acting in a very balanced way, once again similar to what SRK does. Vidya Balan is a great actor but I wouldn’t call her a huge superstar by any means..I’d probably compare her to what Aamir khan is in bollywood (great movies, great script, good acting but give them a weak script and they cannot make that into a hit (i.e taalash, ghanchakar)

okay, i missed to write about which movie Dippy got criticised, it was Race 2, for her animated dialogue deliveries, and it is not that but every movie if you take, she doesn’t know when to pause and the flow of delivering a dialogues, as she just seems to be mugging up those lines and saying it.
and this is not made up, as it is there on critics sites and most of the neutral fans felt too while watching movie. If you can’t deliver a dialogue properly how come people say she can act is well beyond logic.
