Best of Koffee with Karan: Part 2

Second part in the ‘Best Episodes of Koffee with Karan’ series. Click here to read Part 1

6) Kapoor Family (2nd season): Kapoor clan is considered as the first family of the Bollywood and it was, probably, the first time that almost the whole family made an appearance on the national television together. Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor and Rajeev Kapoor along with their sister Seema Kapoor recalled their childhood and yearningly talked about their late father Raj Kapoor. Rishi and Randhir were particularly assertive and brought the house down with pulsating persiflage. Neetu Kapoor revealed that the customary humour of the Kapoor clan emanate from her mother-in-law Krishna Kapoor who gabble the most outrageously hilarious lines with a poker-face.

The best line of the show came when Karan asked Rishi Kapoor that why whisky is better than women and the latter quipped, “Because whisky doesn’t talk.”

7) Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor: This remains the most controversial episode in the annals of Koffee with Karan, the one which threatened to tear apart many friendships, relations and equation in the Bollywood. Deepika had just broken up from Ranbir and she teamed up with Sonam to take the mickey out of her erstwhile flame. Deepika hinted that Ranbir had cheated on her and asseverated that he (Ranbir) is the most suitable person to endorse condoms. She proclaimed that she doesn’t find Ranbir sexy (in a sneering tone).

Sonam was even more mordant. She stated that Ranbir needs to get a good stylish and mocked at the song ‘Jab Se Tere Naina’ (in which Ranbir sheds towel) from their movie ‘Saawariya’. She further added that Ranbir is a good friend but a terrible boyfriend. Deepika and Sonam seemed to relish every moment of ridiculing Rambir. When the episode was broadcast, it spawned furore. Rishi Kapoor, father of Ranbir, was massively miffed and lambasted both the female actors in print and on TV. He even blamed Karan and said that his relationship with Johar family is in jeopardy.

8) Amitabh Bachchan and Shweta Nanda: The ‘Bachchan’ family is one of the most respected and premier families in the Bollywood but one hasn’t read much about Shweta. It was pleasant to see her opening about her family on the show. She was articulate and extremely graceful. Amitabh Bachchan was charming and effortless as ever peppering the conversation with buoyant rejoinders. He stated that Shweta is a wonderful writer but she doesn’t write enough. When Karan asked him about one thing he would wish to change about Jaya Bachchan, he retorted, “Marwana hai kya?? (You want me killed…).” He suggested that he didn’t particularly like to work with Shatrughan Sinha as the latter always came late on the sets. Mr Bachchan also anointed Salman Khan as the best TV host.

Shweta warmly complained to her father that he keeps raising bar, in every department, that it’s particularly difficult for the family members to measure up to lofty standards. She teasingly said that she wish her brother (Abhishek Bachchan) listens to her more than.

9) Shahrukh Khan: Unlike his previous appearances on the show, this time SRK came alone on the show and even the tenor of the conversation was in sharp contrast to earlier ones. There were bouts of irreverence but he didn’t go the whole hog. This episode was more about his equation with Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Farah Khan and the host. He famously apologized to Salman for the ugly spat they had in 2008. He professed that he was in the wrong as probably he inadvertently disappointed his friend. Talking about his contemporaries – Salman and Aamir – he asserted that he has always looked upto both of them as they are his seniors. He said that they are bigger stars and he wish to grow up as both of them.

He explained that though he has a lot of fondness for all his friends, he doesn’t have have the habit of calling up his friends regularly. He further added that he doesn’t know how to say sorry so he’s often misunderstood. There were some tender moments as he spoke about his late father and mother. The last sequence of the episode moved Karan to tears as SRK said that the late Yash Johar (Karan’s father) told him to take good care of him (Karan) but he would like to say that Karan instead is looking after him and putting up with his foibles.

10) Ajay Devgan: This was Ajay Devgan’s first appearance on the show and he debunked his popular image. Ajay is perceived as reclusive and intense guy but he displayed his fun and puckish side to the hilt. He admitted that he likes to play practical japes on the sets and is a chronic prankster. About his media-shy image, he explained that he likes to indulge in promotions before the release of his movies but shuns going overboard. He clarified that there’s no animosity between him and SRK since they don’t each other much in the first place. Karan, who is a close friend of Kajol, recalled the time when Kajol had just started courtship with Ajay and sought his advice.

Like in Bollywood, Ajay turned out to be a dark horse in the ‘Rapid Fire’ round as well as he answered the questions with fiery frolicsome. When Karan asked him what he was likely to find in Ranbir’s bedroom, he quipped, “After watching your show (referring to Deepika and Sonam episode), I don’t know who, what and how many I will find.”

  • SRK’s episode was one of the worst episodes, but I loved the one with Ajay Devgan. Although my best tv show is Big Boss, today I’ll be watching Koffee With Karan :)

  • i just hated sonam in that episode.. she had nothing to do with ranbir then why she was bitching about him? Deepika though was Ranbir’s ex-lover and it was fine with deepika..

DP was also not saying much but Sonam was over the top… it was like she looking frustrated for not being linked up with Ranbir… He chose Deepika over Sonam and in the next episode Ranbir also said that Sonam was just a friend and i didn’t see a girlfriend in her..

  • The most boring show was that of SRK….he is not witty and his answers are not interesting. He overacts as usual.
