Television’s small screen was never rated highly by the big screen superstars in the 20th century. And they had right reasons to believe so – there was no international exposure, the pay cheques weren’t big enough and it’s wasn’t as mainstream either (compared to today, not many homes had television back then).
But things have changed dramatically in the last 10 years or so. Television in India has become a huge industry with so many channels. All strongly competing in their quest to attract high TRPs; they are shelling out big bucks to attract the biggest superstars in the country.
Bollywood stars too have quickly realised the true potential of the ‘idiot box’, as a means to earn quick money and fame through this medium as well. Reality shows, in particular, get a lot of eyeballs due to their innovative concepts and the prize money involved.
Here is my list of Top 6 Best Indian Reality shows hosted by Bollywood megastars (in no particular order)
Kaun Banega Crorepati (Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan): It all started with KBC in July 2000. Based on a UK based game show ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’, KBC marked the comeback of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. The ‘millennium superstar’ got enormous appreciation as a host and the show actually did what looked impossible back then – revived his film career in a big way. The show garnered high TRPs right from it’s first season and the game’s concept became hugely popular. KBC is currently in its 6th season and Big B has hosted all of them expect the 3rd in 2007 when SRK presented this show. This show started the trend of reality shows in India and also lured Bollywood stars to try out their luck on the smaller scenes.
Bigg Boss (Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan): Bigg Boss is a reality show based on the original Dutch Big Brother format. Contestants live in an isolated house trying to avoid being evicted by the public with the aim of winning a prize money at the end. Bigg Boss Season 1, 2 and 3 were hosted by Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty and Amitabh Bachchan respectively. Since then Salman Khan has become a regular host of the show as he successfully presented Season 4 and the recently concluded Season 6. Season 5 was presented mainly by Sanjay Dutt with special appearances from Salman.
Satyamev Jayate (Aamir Khan): Aamir is known for being unique and different.. his television debut was no different. Satyamev Jayate was primarily a talk show that highlighted social issues prevalent in India such as female foeticides, child sexual abuse, dowry etc. Aired at 11AM on Sunday’s, Satyamev Jayate received an overwhelmingly positive response and feedback from both critics as well as the public was fantastic! Easily one of our favorite shows in the list!
Dus Ka Dum (Salman Khan): Dus Ka Dum is an Indian version of the popular American reality game show Power of 10. It marked the television debut of Salman Khan and, just like Big B, was highly instrumental in giving Salman’s movie career a much needed boost. The show was hugely popular and it helped Sony TV regain its third position in the Indian television ratings.
Khatron Ke Khiladi (Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra): ‘Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi’ is an Indian stunt/dare reality game show based on the American reality show ‘Fear Factor’. The show was hosted by Bollywood’s Khiladi Akshay Kumar. He was replaced by Priyanka Chopra for the third season due to scheduling conflicts. However, the Khiladi made a successful comeback as he presented the 4th season.
Just Dance (Hrithik Roshan): When it comes to dancing skills, Hrithik Roshan is by far the best dancer in the industry. So the ‘God Of Dance’ made his television debut with the Indian version of popular international dance reality show ‘Just Dance’. Hrithik was more a friend than a judge on the show.
