Best Ajay Devgan Songs: Top 10
Over the last 22 years, Ajay Devgan has established himself as one of the most consistent and dependable superstars of the Hindi Film Industry. He has excelled in varied roles and is at ease with all the different genres. To go with his no-nonsense and serious onscreen persona, when it comes to the music department, Ajay might not boast of popular dance numbers or countless hits as compared to his contemporaries, but nonetheless his song bank does have some memorable compositions picturized on him.
His next movie ‘Himmatwala’ is releasing tomorrow and it features the re-recorded versions of two hugely popular songs from the original – ‘Nainon Mein Sapna’ and ‘Taaki Taaki’.
Here we present the all time best 10 songs of Ajay Devgan:
Raah Mein Unse: This song from Vijaypath is a masterpiece melody from Anu Malik. Kumar Sanu, who was Ajay Devgan’s voice for his maximum hits of 90s, sang this song with female vocals by Alka Yagnik. The superb picturization of this song on Ajay and Tabu adds weightage to the deep meaningful lyrics by Zameer Kazmi and raises the bar further of this irresistible composition.
Pyaar Kiya to Nibhana: Anand Raj Anand are one of the underrated music directors in the industry. This song from the movie ‘Major Saab’ has a catchy beat, is pleasant to the ears and has some attractive poetic lyrics by Dev Kohli. Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal rendered playback vocals for this ever so romantic love song filmed on Ajay and Sonali Bendre.
Maine Pyaar Tumhi Se: This is one special song from Ajay’s debut movie ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ and was quite a rage when it released. I still fondly remember my primary school antakshiri days where we had to start the game by singing a song that starts with letter ‘M’. 99% of the times it used to start with this song sung by Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal. The song was numero uno in the old famous Radio countdown Philips Top 10 for many weeks and it ended almost six month reign of Aamir Khan’s ‘Mujhe Neend Na Aaye’ from Dil.
Jab Kisiki Taraf Dil: Vinoo Mahendra wrote splendid lyrics for the title song of ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’ featuring the real life couple Ajay Devgan and Kajol. Yet again, Kumar Sanu impressed with his wide range on vocals for this brilliant Jatin-Lalit composition. A simple mix of instruments brings this song to its height.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Title Song: Although this title song from ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ is slightly more inclined towards feminine side with perfect vocals by Kavitha Krishnamurthy for Aishwarya Rai. But new playback singer Mohammad Salamat complemented well and rendered vocals for Ajay, who has given one of his most matured performances in this movie.
Omkara Title Song: Vishal Bhardwaj composed a rustic and highly energetic title song for his movie ‘Omkara’ and the song was just tailor made for the high octane vocals of Sukhwinder Singh. It requires a few listens to understand the mastery of Gulzar’s lyrics as he described the fearless and unpredictable nature of character ‘Omkara’ in a poetic manner. The concept of this classic composition was appreciated and manipulated by other composers also in the title songs of ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Singham’.
Tune Mujhe Pehchana Nahin: This Latin like song from ‘Raju Chacha’ is yet another superb melody by Jatin-Lalit complemented with excellent guitar play. In one of his all-time best songs, Shaan’s voice is ever so smooth and romantic. The song starts with a dialogue between Ajay and Kajol. Anand Bakshi wrote simple and hummable lyrics which go perfectly with the addictive music.
Tum Jo Aaye: Pritam composed this ever so romantic track for ‘Once Upon a Time In Mumbai’ that sweeps you right into the love that resides in its heart. Pritam intelligently mixes the class of the melody with the chartbuster tunes in this masterful composition which is soulfully crooned by stalwart Rahat Fateh Ali Khan along with Tulsi Kumar.
Jeeta Tha Jiske Liye: The most dependable singer-composers-lyricist trio of 90s combined together to create evergreen popular numbers for ‘Dilwale’ featuring Ajay Devgan, Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon. This song is effortlessly sung by Kumar Sanu, nicely written by Sameer and wonderfully composed by the duo of Nadeem-Shravan.
Mera Rang De: A.R.Rahman proved his amazing versatility with this patriotic and traditional track from ‘The Legend Of Bhagat Singh’. Sonu Nigam’s voice in the song carries a repressed energy which explodes as the song progresses. Ajay won his 2nd National Award after ‘Zakham’ for his portrayal of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in the movie.
Some of Ajay’s ‘best’ songs that didn’t make it to the list were Wo Ladki Bahut Yaad (Qayamat), Ho nahi sakta (Diljale), Singham Title Song, Dekho Dekho Jaanam (Ishq), Abhi Kuch Dino Se (Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji),Chalao Na Naino Se (Bol Bachchan) and Golmaal Title track.
