Bajirao Mastani vs Dilwale: Positive side of the clash for both films

A clash is never good for the producers and distributors of two big films. But since there can only be 3 festive releases in a year and almost every big film wants to cash-in on the extended holiday weekend, clashes, in the years to come, will be inevitable.

Here are some quick positives for both Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale.

Positives for Dilwale:

  • It’s the biggest film of the year and the genre is extremely audience friendly. The music has worked too. Majority of people would want to watch Dilwale first and it would also be the first choice at mass centres.
  • The entire star cast and director Rohit Shetty have a excellent track record. Read the article we published yesterday.
  • Since Shah Rukh Khan is the producer of Dilwale, the risks are much lower as compared to Bajirao Mastani. Khan has already recovered a huge chunk of his investment and Dilwale would be a profitable venture even in the worst case scenario.
  • The history of box office clashes is clearly in SRK’s favour. Call it good luck or stardom, most filmmakers who have challenged SRK have suffered huge losses. Jaan-e-Maan was blown away by Don. Jab Tak Hai Jaan did not have the genre in its favour, but the worldwide business of the film was way ahead of the mass-entertainer Son Of Sardaar. And then we have the one-sided battle between Bhansali and SRK in 2007, Om Shanti Om was leading right from Day 1 against Saawariya and went one to be one of the highest grossers of all time.
  • The one thing common in most films that have clashed against an SRK film, is that he always had the genre and content in his favour. It was only during the JTHJ vs SOS clash that the genre was in Ajay’s favour and the result was a lot closer. Son Of Sardaar was a clean-hit at the box office, even though Jab Tak Hai Jaan collected more.

Positives for Bajirao Mastani

  • The success of ‘Baahubali’ has given a huge boost to the historical genre, something that has also helped fetch a whopping sum of Rs 50 crore for the satellite rights of Bajirao Mastani.
  • Clashing against a big film like Dilwale has also resulted in plenty of free publicity for the film. It has been in news throughout the year.
  • Those looking for a ‘good’ film and not just a ‘time-pass entertainer’ could give Bajirao Mastani a chance over Dilwale. Rohit Shetty films might have a following, but there is a section of audience that finds his films silly.
  • Deepika Padukone has a strong following all over India, Priyanka is popular too, Ranveer Singh appeals to every section of the audience and Sanjay Leela Bhansali films usually perform very well in the state of Maharastra – which is the biggest for film business.
  • The second trailer of Bajirao Mastani has received a extremely positive response, something that will ensure higher footfalls.
  • And finally, the pre-release reports for the film is good. People who have watched the film at a special screening have called it a ‘masterpiece’. If this turns out to be true and Bajirao Mastani does indeed turn out to be a excellent film, it could even do the impossible. Remember, a film like ‘Baahubali’ had zero appeal towards the Hindi audience and the star cast wasn’t too appealing either. Yet, the film went on to become the first dubbed film to collect more than Rs 100 crore. There is nothing quite like extraordinary word-of-mouth publicity.

  • no way i think it could be a masterpiece…bhansali is good director no doubt.
but he has his share of failures.
    saawariya guzaarish…havnt seen both
guzarrish is considered a masterpiece but everyone knows its box office fate

  • Distributer who watch Dilwale said it is as good as Bazigar if it become true then i am 100% sure Dilwale break pk record

  • SLB also gave masterpiece Guzaarish & Saawariya but both the films were box office bomb even HR can’t save Guzaarish.
Anything can happen with BM but DILWALE will have housefull shows through out this week then WOM will Tell its future.
I don’t think after HNY debacle SRK can choose any bad film along with Fan & RAEES.
DILWALE will also be a masterpiece among massy entertainers.

By the way KATTI BATTI , PRDP , Shaandaar all are considering masterpiece & perfect films by sources but we all know the results.

  • Indicine , i have a query regarding this bajirao mastani multiplex screen ratio issue?
Doesnt it depends solely on the multiplex owners about the amount of shows they want to allot to a particular movie?
There is definetly a single screen booking procedure as it is evident but does even multiplex screens or the amount of shows get booked?
Why do makers of bajirao mastani forcefully wanted more shows to be alloted to them as the multiplex clearly wants it to be in favour of dilwale with a ratio of 65:35 ?
    Hope you respond

    • @Durgesh, multiplexes were willing to give 60:40 in favour of Diwale. But makers of Bajirao Mastani want a higher share. The negotiations are not just about the number of shows, but also to get good amount of evening / late night shows. Even if BM gets 50:50 ratio, but most of the shows are in the morning, whereas Dilwale gets many more shows in the night, it’ll be advantage Dilwale.

So negotiations are still on. Ideally, this clash should have been averted. It simply does not make sense to release a film like Bajirao Mastani on a big holiday like Christmas. Even if it gets a solo release, exhibitors won’t be happy. They want maximum footfalls during festivals and only a big film like Dilwale can ensure high footfalls.

Unless Bajirao Mastani turns out to be a good film that is liked by the audience, Bhansali and Eros will regret this clash.

  • content can give surprising results…

Dilwale will be a family entertainer but cannot be a classic/masterpiece as it has not been made that way

BM could give smaller stars the courage to take on the mighty Khans!

  • Also Dilwale reviews from First Post comming extremly positive which is unexpected as crictic rated it 4.5* or 4* can’t beleive its a rohit shetty film but don’t underestime Rohit too he can surprise

  • By the way after the super success of Bahubali all the historical films Puli & Rudramadevi turned out flop due to high expectations.
BM also have higher expectations as it is a Bollywood film & high expectations can destroy any good film.

  • if BM is indeed a masterpiece, they should have held the press screenings by now…..would help in opening surely as its releasing with the biggest film of the year!

  • BM mustani pre release release report extraordinary just like ra1 because after 1st traial noone said bad but From Firstpost Bajirao Mastani got 3* n most of them rated 2.5-3.5* range mean BM is as good as ramlela so no chance to survibe

  • Comparing baahubali with bm is like comparing devdas with saawariya.
Baahubali was the most expensive movie made ever in the history of Indian cinema directed by none other than the biggest south director who has a cent percent track record. So please stop comparing it with baahubali.Check the vfx of both the movies sorry to say but bm would look like a regional film compared to baahubali
Talking about masterpiece we all know slb is no hirani
We all know what happened to saawariya guzarish (hrithik was just outstanding in that movie though) and ram leela
Ram leela worked solely because of the sex factor and songs.I am yet to come across anybody who considers it to be a classic
Rohit never claims to be a great director but his movies have been loved by the majority section of the audiences which determines the outcome of the movie
So all in all dilwale should collect twice more than what bm collects even in worst case scenario
Sorry for my long boring comment but all those who have high expectations from this movie are being misled and misguided by some people who have no intentions of watching bm but will ensure they do their bit in creating negativity for dilwale?

  • The standard create by baahubali going to hurt BM a big way…BM is not even look closer to RUDRAMADEVI…BM will find hard…lots of songs also there in BM…

  • No doubt Dilwale is uperhand since SRK VARUN is there the difference might be for 20-crores in the end but can’t ignore BM as well good director good star cast great custome it will be lot better if anyone film release after a week on 25-Dec HOLIDAY.

  • no matter how much negativity do the haters spread.there is a common thing in india that “jahan mutna mana hai wahan sab mutte hai”.thank you very much dear haters for increasing dilwale’s buzz.advance booking is tremendous even best after dhoom3.early reports are mind blowing.so dilwale all the way

  • I m prtty sure that this is the biggest mistake Bhansali has made. Clash could have been averted but now fate has been written .

  • BM:
I have a feeling that BM will be a good movie but boring in parts hence wont be liked by major section of the audience.
It will do 85 cr business in Indian box office.

    Dilwale:
It will be a silly movie but entertainment is guaranteed and thus will be preferred by majority of the audience.
It will do 210 cr business considering clash.

  • Dilwale will be flop finally this site accepted that ajay beat srk on clash of 2012 ….no doubt ajay is real sultan of Bollywood and if bm turn out masterpiece then 150 cr confirmed for bajirao mastani
