Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 Review

The Deols hit the jackpot, of sorts, with Yamla Pagla Deewana, their second success after Apne. The film brought them back into the game once again and made them a commodity to reckon with. For the second part in the series, Sangeeth Sivan, the director of Kya Kool Hai Hum was roped in as director. Can Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 continue the winning streak for the Deol’s? Let’s find out.

Story, Screenplay and Dialogues: Now, describing the plot of a film like this is harder than getting the 1st rank in JEE. Anyway, here it goes.. Dharam and Gajodhar (played by Dharmendra and Bobby Deol) land up in London to con a multi-millionaire Yograj (Annu Kapoor) by getting his daughter Suman (Neha Sharma) to marry Gajodhar. Now, honesty ka spokesperson Paramveer (Sunny Deol) is also in London to help Yograj do up his club! The rest of the film is about how Paramveer tries to keep Dharam and Gajodhar from conning Yograj, and how Gajodhar and Dharam find the tables turned on them. And oh, there was something about Paramveer being a debt collector somewhere.

Now normally, madness would have ensued with a plot like this but the comedic set-pieces are too unimaginative to make you laugh after a certain point of time. The film simply becomes banal. It becomes an exercise in futility. Just like reviewing a Salman Khan film. Eitherway, this sequel follows a long line of disappointing Bollywood sequels. The dialogues, surprisingly aren’t funny as they should have been. Instead, they rely on age old gags like orangutans and so on. I am led to believe that the screenplay wasn’t longer than 30 pages.

Direction and Miscellaneous: Sangeeth Sivan is encharged with the duty of helming the sequel. His closeness to Bobby Deol is what got him the job, I am assuming. Yamla Pagla Deewan 2 is an addition to the list of duds that Sangeeth Sivan has given. That illustrious (not) list includes eternal classics (not) like Click, Ek, Chura Liya Hai Tumne. Sivan completely loses the plot here and let’s the Deols be themselves. What is the use of a director if he/she can’t steer the ship in the right direction?

The other aspects of the film don’t impress either. To be honest, the cinematography in a film like this doesn’t need to be world class but a little more slickness would have been appreciated. The sets, costume designs are perfectly okay for a film which belongs to the comedy genre. Somebody point me to the shop where they sell ape body suits, please? Pretty please? Also, for a film directed by someone named ‘Sangeeth’ you expect the songs to be good or at least, decent. But barring 1 song (the title song), all the songs fail to make an impact.

Acting: Like Bollywood couples Kareena-Saif, Kajol-Ajay, the Deols seem to have found a new life as a package. The film does seem a bit more tolerant than what it actually is, thanks to the trio. Sunny Deol plays the inhibited, honest Paramveer sincerely. His fans will be happy to have him screaming again. Bobby Deol is surprisingly funny. It seems he had the most fun while making the movie. Dharmendra may have gotten old but he is still child-like in his behaviour. And that’s in a positive way. We need more senior actors like him in the Industry.

The female actors like Neha Sharma and Kristina Akheeva manage to look ravishing but don’t really have a lot of acting to do here. Seasoned actors like Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Johnny Lever are wasted in their roles. So is the ever so funny Sucheta Khanna. Alas! No I mean alas as in lazy. The lazy writing is responsible for this irritating hamfest.

Conclusion and Box Office of Yamla Pagla Deewana 2: If you enjoyed the first film (like me) and were hoping for more of the same in the second one, you will be left disappointed. The first one was simply way more fun. This one comes across as a shady fake from China trying to fabricate the humour which made the first part a Hit. If you are a fan of the Deols, you CAN check it out at your own peril.

The film has taken a good opening in North India and Central India, but the disappointing content coupled with the super success of YJHD will make a dent in the collections. Taking that into consideration, the makers should be happy even if the film crosses the collections of the first film. Hopefully, this is will mean no more Yamla Pagla Deewana 3!

Positives:

  • Deols
  • London

Negatives:

  • Story and Screenplay
  • Direction
  • Gags are unimaginative
  • Bad acting by the supporting cast
  • Music
Rating: ★½☆☆☆

  • YPD2 is better than the comical Raavan Returns as Ra.one and the Orangutan was way more scarier than Arjuns Ra.one…!

For me 5 out of 5 and total paisa vasool.

  • Lately but truely, audience has lost interest in hardcore action-masala films. K786, Himmatwala and now YPD2 has proven it.

    Is Salman in danger?
No way! His immense star power alone can pull audiences.
