Sultan Box Office Opening

The morning shows on the day of release is the true test of stardom. No film, barring FAN and Baaghi, has even taken a decent initial this year. But Salman Khan’s Sultan has taken the box office by storm, giving the industry its first ‘bumper’ opening of 2016.

Even with a massive release and multiplexes running a very high number of shows, most shows up until 11AM in the morning were running at 80-90% occupancy with quite a few late morning shows packed to capacity.

Every circuit has opened well, Delhi/UP is outstanding with the film recording very high occupancy and collections in the NCR region. Mumbai circuit has opened well and ‘class’ circuits like Mysore and West Bengal are excellent too. Response in Bangalore has been terrific, Mangalore is recording twice more occupancy than any other film this year. In Bengal too, Salman is making his presence felt in a big way. Tamilnadu, Kerala and Nizam circuits are recording lower occupancy as compared to other circuits, but these circuits too should catch up as the day progresses. C.I, C.P Berar, Rajasthan, East Punjab were all terrific in the morning.

There are signs already that Sultan is well on course to make history on Day 1 at the box office. The opening is bigger than Salman’s last two Eid releases ‘Kick’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and comparable to the response that ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ got on the day of its release.

Only a couple of actors in the industry have consistently delivered when it comes to challenging opening day records, but Salman is probably the only actor who has pushed the limit higher on a consistent basis with films like Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011) and Ek Tha Tiger (2012). Sultan falls in that league and it wouldn’t be surprising if the film manages a record-smashing opening day.

Opening Day occupancy of films in 2016

  • Sultan – 75-80% (partial holiday)
  • FAN - 55% (partial holiday)

  • Sultana – A mixture of CDI and Plan Singh Tomar with pathetic acting from the non-actor. Strictly one time watch for non-actor fans while others should avoid it.
    -Initial reports

  • Due to Eid weekend, all time high ticket price, no competition, back-to-back holidays, backing from YRF – it will survive at box-office else the fate would have been different, had it released on a non-holiday.

  • “Comparable to the response that ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ got on the day of its release.”

All the trade Pundits say that ETT recorded highest number occupancy on opening day in this decade. SULTAN’s response is similar to ETT. That’s mean way better than PRDP & HNY!

  • Neutral audiences: Better save your money for MJ/Rustom as you can afford both the movies in the same price what you will be investing (or say wasting) in Sultana.

  • @indicine plz post tere sang yaara 4 gante ho gye srk k song m to 2 article aa jate iti der mein
Double advantage for sultan that its getting 2 holidays now as today is being considered as partial holiday and tomorrow would be national holiday
Way it has opened every chance of touching 40
    Congratulations to the team sultan

  • For my colleagues who are ardent non-actor fans (and they watched it fdfs -8:30 am show) , first half is excellent while second is ‘satisfactory’.
While for those who are kind of neutral – first half is ‘satisfactory’ while second is way too stretched.

Overall, Sultana is an average movie just like his previous releases which eventually proves that BB was a mere fluke.

P.S. : I have not watched it nor planning to watch.

  • SULTAN is getting 80-90% occupancies despite being a Pre Eid/Ramdan release. Just imagine if it would be a normal release what would happen to it!!!

  • This reminded me of a dialogue of Salman’s movie Kick : “Woh apni Eidi lene zaroor ayega”. Salman is back again to get his Eidi which he has been consistently doing for so many Eids. Hats off to him for delivering blockbusters one after another.

First half of the year was slow for the industry so happy to see the second half of the year start with a bang.

  • From Karachi Pakistan
Today is Eid Day 01 in here and I can’t get the ticket of Sultan because its Houseful here in whole city i am trying to get ticket for 2nd day of Eid

  • @indicine will it be a Double advantage for sultan that its getting 2 holidays now as today is being considered as partial holiday and tomorrow would be national holiday?
Way it has opened every chance of touching 40 today opening is extra ordinary
    Congratulations to the team sultan

  • @indicine:

SULTAN benefits 15-20% due to being a partial holiday release. But it also loses 15-20% audience due Pre Eid/Ramdan factor. Hence, it should should be considered a normal release not a partial holiday release!

  • Both HNY and PRDP opened in the range of 75-85% occupancy on next day of Diwali (which is considered to be a huge day for business).
Can somebody tell me how Sultana opened with a similar occupancy (75-80%) when it is just a ‘partial’ holiday and not a full fledged one?
Both PRDP and Sultana have non-actor, so how the occupancies can differ till this extent?
If non-actor can give an occupancy of 75-80% on a ‘partial’holiday, then he should have given an occupancy of 90-100% on Diwali, isn’t it? (as that was complete holiday unlike this ‘partial’ one).
