Shahrukh Khan Career Analysis 1992 – 2001 (Part 1)

In the Hindi film industry, it’s difficult to make it big without a godfather. Once you do, it’s even harder to retain the top spot. To be at the top of your game for over 2 decades, is no mean achievement and Shahrukh Khan has achieved it all. Bollywood saw its first Superstar in Rajesh Khanna and even he couldn’t escape the universal law of change. Ironically, if there is any other ‘superstar’ who can claim Khanna’s throne, it’s got to be Shahrukh Khan for both of them excel in the Romance-Drama genre.

For Bollywood, the last two decades have been filled with major milestones. The market for Hindi films has grown exponentially the world over. New superstars (Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor) have make their debuts. But what’s noteworthy is whenever a superstar creates a record or every time a newcomer makes a dynamic debut, instant comparisons are made with Shahrukh Khan. Both within the industry, the media and fans. It proves that over the course of time, SRK has evolved as a standard in himself.

19951King Khan alters the rules of the game and reigns supreme as a romantic star. With DDLJ (All Time Blockbuster) and Karan Arjun (Blockbuster) seizing the top 2 spots, SRK for the first time takes the top spot, which was until now held by senior stars (Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol and Govinda).
1996-The year turns out to be a nightmare for SRK with Chaahat (Flop) and English Babu Desi Mem (Flop). Aamir Khan takes the top spot with Raja Hindustani (All Time Blockbuster) followed by Sunny Deol whose Jeet (Hit) and Ghatak (Hit) acquire 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. This year also marked the beginning of the Khan rivalry.
19972Shahrukh bounces back with two successful films and is now officially crowned as the King of Romance. Dil To Pagal Hai (Super Hit) and Pardes (Hit) are the 2nd and 3rd biggest hits of the year respectively. Sunny Mania at its peak with two of his films in the Top 5 : Border (Blockbuster) - No.1 and Ziddi (Hit) - No.5
19981SRK's love with Romance prolongs as he delivers his Second All Time Blockbuster in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which also holds the Numero Uno position by substantial margin. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (Semi Hit) is a success and takes the 2nd spot. Ajay Devgn's Pyar To Hona Hi Tha (Hit) is at No 3. Salman Khan sees quite a few winners in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Bandhan (Semi Hit) & Jab Pyaar Kisise Hot Hai (Semi Hit).
1999-SRK's sole release this year was Badshah which unfortunately turned out to be Box Office dud. But it was after this film that he was termed the 'Badshah' by his fans. Salman Khan is on a roll with his films grabbing all Top 3 spots: - 1. Hum Sath Sath Hain (Hit); 2. Biwi No.1 (Hit); 3. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (Semi Hit). After a string of flops, Akshay makes a comeback with Jaanwar (Semi Hit).
20002Shahrukh again strikes back with Mohabbatein (Super Hit) and Josh (Above Average) which confirm 2nd and 4th spots. But the year belongs to Hrithik Roshan who makes a dream debut with Kaho Naa Pyar Hai (Blockbuster) and also becomes the first actor to win the Filmfare Best Actor award on debut. His Mission Kashmir, which manages a better opening than Mohabbatein, closes in at 3rd position.
20012Bollywood gets its Biggest Blockbuster ever in Gadar (All Time Blockbuster) and King Khan once again takes the second spot with his film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Blockbuster). Shahrukh Khan-Karan Johar become a brand and their film does exceedingly well in the overseas markets. Aamir's oscar nominated Lagaan (Hit) is the third biggest hit of the year.

In the 10 year period between 1992 to 2001, Shahrukh Khan was easily the most consistent star, making it to the Top 3 seven times. He was unsuccessful twice and did not have a release once.
